Feeder rope broke.

Feeder rope broke. - 10/04/20 11:48 PM

i had a rope and 2 pulleys on a metal pole to hang my feeder on and to aid in lowering in lifting (feeder holds 40 lbs max, full), i bought 50' of 130 pound working load limit. lifting the feeder up today, (not full, about 30 pounds), rope breaks in the middle, with the feeder and 30 lbs of corn about 8 feet off the ground, messed my motor up all to heck (jammed the shaft down into the guts) and bent the spinner a bit.. new motor i should be good to go, and New rope with a higher load limit i suppose. i was using 1/4" 130 pound test rope.. so that's probably stupid on my part.

Don’t use rope. Use a cable. Rope, over time, will never be as strong as it’s rated sitting out in the weather. And never never stand up any feeder. Never know when it’s going to drop. Glad you weren’t hurt.

Now that you mention cable, I know where I have about 30 feet of old winch cable laying around.
I was able to get the feeder straightened out with a few whacks of a hammer, and got the guts back in the motor.

On a side note about how long should I expect a 6V feeder battery to last? The feeder has been out roughly ,3 weeks, going off twice a day, medium speed, for 6 seconds. It's at 2 bars now.

I used to fiddle with those crank up feeders. We had a wench break and feeder hit the ground hard. My buddy said good thing we had those legs on their or it would have smashed the timer/motor. I said, yeah and if you hadn't got out of the way one of those legs would be sticking out the other end of your foot.

We left that place after that season and that crank up feeder.

Have two of them fall on you and you will hate these feeders. Very lucky I was not injured. Both times, it was cable.

And rats as well as squirrels and raccoons will chew on ropes thrown over limbs and branches. Always use cable or heavy duty wire.
