Feral hogs

Feral hogs - 09/23/20 03:30 PM

We are here in Texas for our 1st time and came with another family who has relatives in Waco. I’m a Veteran Police Officer from Atlanta and he’s a retired Navy Vet. We were reading about the feral hog problem here in Texas. Do the local farmers allow or want experienced hunters to come in to help eradicate feral hogs? Is the feral hog problem a State wide issue or further south? Thnx so much!

welcome

Lots of landowners don't want the liability, and many don't let someone they don't know wander around their place. But yes, it's a huge problem, statewide, everywhere. Some still try to charge for pig hunts, but it's usually a pretty low fee. It's a conundrum that's been cussed and discussed on here many times.

All over. Lots of hogs near Lake Waco on the Corps of Engineer land.

They are all over.
Many spots that charge to hunt them and as stated most landowners want folks they know and can trust on their land hunting.
I would try to get to know the relatives and their friends, might get a local connection to hunt. Otherwise you'll probably have to pay, most charge to try and recoup some damage costs associated with the hogs. They do a lot of damage.
Some spots are actually put and take, they bring in hogs form other places and you hunt fenced in areas. Others it is a free range hunt and can be challenging.
You may enjoy a thermal hunt, guided.

Hog hunting is big business. Not many folks are truly focused on eradication.

Since a hunting license is no longer required for hogs, that should save a bunch of money on license fees.

Thanks for the intel ya’ll. Looks like it’ll be a no go for this year, but we’ll for sure be coming back another time. Good luck with ya’lls deer season. Texas is truly Gods country. You folks are damn lucky to get to live and hunt here year round.

Hopefully you’ll get back here soon. Thanks for your service. I know things have been a bit edgy in Atlanta lately. Be safe.

Yes, that was the exception for a deprecating animal where you didn’t need a license. License to take hogs was eliminated last year. Before, had to have license even though they were considered non-game species. Of course, you still have to have permission or be the owner of the property you hunt them on. Nothing I have read precludes harvesting the meat.

You'll quickly not to use 'eradicate' and 'Feral Hogs' in the same sentence. wink

Never happen.
