Quarantine Hog - 04/07/20 03:07 PM

Despite the quarantine, I got a number of things accomplished around the place yesterday. By about 6:30 PM, I decided to pick up a rifle and take a stroll just to stretch my legs. I grabbed a little .250 Savage carbine and set out from the house hoping I might cross paths with a coyote that needed settling.

Just about the time I was ready to start back to the house for dinner (my sister and Jane had a pot of New Mexican pozole on the stove all afternoon!), this big brindled boar wandered up out of the draw and caught a slug behind the ear for his trouble.

One pig down...another half million to go.

every time I see your screen name / handle / whatever you call it (218 Bee) brings back fond childhood memories as that is the caliber I started hunting with in a model '92 up until I bought my first rifle at about age 11 ... when my dad was trying to separate things between my brother and I getting close to the end of his life here on earth, was about the time the patent ran out and Browning started making a model '92 and dad ordered one in 218 Bee that he gave me (my brother got the original one) ... one of my prized safe queens...

That's an awesome story, PMK!

Like you, my first "big" rifle was Daddy's '92 in .218 Bee. Killed my first deer with it, too!

yep, killed several dozen deer with that little gun, it was deadly out to about 125 yards and my dad had it dialed in with the side mount 3x Weaver scope with post reticle. I saw him win hundreds of dollars when he took his clients (Sinclair and Goodyear) out to the old trash dump to shoot their rifles in before he would take them hunting. They would get a 12" group and call it good ... Dad would say "I bet you $100 a shot I can drive the screws in on the back of that old refrigerator" ... many took him up and started shucking out the Benjamins ...

Lordy, we plowed a lot of the same ground! Daddy's '92 had a side mount as well...but his wore a Weaver 2.5x (with the same post and crosswire)!

I have a bit of a long but funny story that comes to mind about my first deer ... will take a while to compose.

Long stories seem to be the hallmark of the .218 Bee!

Here's what happened to mine: https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/7343796/a-25-20-resurrection#Post7343796

great story indeed! I probably don't have near that much history on my dad's gun, just word of mouth from years gone by. There are actually several stories that my dad told me, mom confirmed about his little 218 Bee.
