Free Range TX Exotics (Part 2) - 02/20/20 03:27 AM

Drum roll....Ok guys here is Part 2. Similar to Part 1, l will need everyones participation, but responses are even more important with this one. The more responses l receive the better the “Grand Reveal” will be which l will post up 1 week from today

Below is a run down of the information that should be contained within your replies and some basic ground rules:

Requested Info Overview

Only using the three animals that were finalized during Part 1 (Axis, Aoudad, and Black Buck) reply back with the County name and animals from this list that you have either seen or harvested in a free range environment. Whether it was seen vs killed does not make a difference and counts all the same so there is no need to specify which applies. Also l still want responses if “None of the above” applies

Basic Rules

1) Pics on “YOUR” game camera but not seen in person COUNTS!
2) Second hand stories, online pics, Facebook, etc DOES NOT COUNT
3) No duplicate posts. If someone has already posted that county and animal then no need to repost

Ok sure there will be other questions but that’s it for now. Let it begin!

Free range seen and harvested in Bandera county:

Axis, sika and aoudad. I killed the # 28 SCI Sika with a bow in Bandera county. If they would properly classify them it would probably be # 1 for a jap sika.

Seen and shot axis in Comal and Kendall County.

Not sure what you want on "none of the above" but I have never seen one at all and ive hunted Williamson, Travis, Burnet, Gillespie, Pecos, Brewster, Smith, Frio, Webb, Lasalle, Shackleford, Throckmorton, Cottle. For what its worth the Hill Country counties were all a long time ago.

Thank you. Good question and l should have clarified this up front. If your going to provide this answer then it needs to be a county that you have spent a decent amount of time hunting within. So a one time hunt in that county or just saying you drive through would NOT qualify as having enough field experience to respond “none of the above” which essentially rules out a free range population of these animals. On the other hand, going under the assumption of “Where there’s 1 there’s more where that came from” so one time hunts and we will call it repeated sightings while driving (for which you are certain are within a low fence) would in fact qualify for responses on counties that confirm the free range existence of these animals

I do believe a lease guy killed the last one spotted though several years ago. The story is a GW or someone from TP&W released a few in the area many years ago.

Update...Responses have exceeded expectations, so big thanks to everyone who has replied! To date, l have 56 of the 254 counties in Texas represented. Will be taking submissions up through 7:00 pm tomorrow night and then doing the final consolidation. So there is still time if you have a new county to add or animals that are different for a county that has already been posted

Has anyone ever saw any Axis in the SHNF? Last june I had either an Axis doe or the biggest white tail fawn I've ever saw run across a road in front of me. I've hunted that area for 40 years and this was the first time I've saw that

Re: Free Range TX Exotics (Part 2) - 03/08/20 04:23 PM

McCulloch county is covered with axis. The city of Brady has a contract to catch axis at the lake. They reported last week they had captured over 80 head and received around 14 thousand for their share of the sales. There are still tons of them running loose. There are black buck and lots of other species in the county.

I've seen free range axis with my own eyes in Kimble and Menard counties. I've seen free range blackbuck with my own eyes in Mason, Llano, Kimble and Blanco counties. I've seen free-range Aoudad with my own eyes in Llano, Mason and Kimble counties. We have an axis doe on cameras at our place in Blanco county, but it's the only one we've ever seen and never seen it with my own eyes so I'm not going to count it (yet). Spotted axis road kill in Williamson, Burnet & Blanco counties.
