Colt SxS Shotgun - 01/18/20 08:50 PM

Anyone have a idea what the value of an Colt SxS shotgun that I THINK is a 10 gauge. Gun has rabbit ears as I call them. double triggers, engraving on the sides & bottom. I am not sure of the model but my guess is that it is an OLD gun. Thanks Daniel

If it's got engraving it might be a higher grade model which has some collectors value. I don't know the field but I've seen some with price tags of several thousand. Here's a link to the Colt listings on Guns International https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/shotguns/colt-shotguns.c613_p1_o6.cfm

Need allot more information than what you've given, right now we're talking anywhere from 500 to 15,0000.

Re: Colt SxS Shotgun - 01/18/20 11:15 PM

Here is information I got off the shotgun.

Colt's Pf.F.A.Mfg.co. This info is on Right & left side of receiver.
Engraving on receiver sides & bottom.
Engaraving on forearm splinter
Inlaid wood (black) on front end of splinter
Serial # 12640 on receiver, on barrel, on splinter & on trigger guard
Damascus Barrels
External hammers (rabbit ears)
I now think it is 12 gauge after taking a closer look.

Re: Colt SxS Shotgun - 01/18/20 11:30 PM

It's most likely an 1878 model, look at the ones posted in the link I provided, at the bottom is a plain grade two model, in the middle is a grade 8, click on them for some quality pictures, then click on the picture to expand, does it match either one. You should have an idea of what you have after you check them out.

nsmike, I looked at pics and the gun I have matches those guns in several different arenas but does not match either of the guns in the link exactly. I called a friend gunsmith and got his opinion and he is going to take look at it next week and tell me what percentage he thinks the gun is. According to him these guns were like cars today you could get dozens of different add-on or upgrades. Thanks You for the link. Daniel

Is it all that difficult to post a couple pics? I'd like to see what it looks like...especially the engravings.....

Serial # 12640 is going to be "Year of Manufacture 1882 Model 1878 HAMMER SHOTGUN"
https://www.colt.com/serial-lookup

IMO this would be a good one to obtain an archive letter from Colt to keep with the shotgun. It would increase the resale value more than the $100+ cost of the letter. Especially if it turned up being a custom engraved order of one. https://coltarchives.com/

Well, I had the Colt looked at this morning and the guru said the gun was rated at 75-80%. I am not aware of how the actual rating criteria is applied but based on what the guru said, gun is in the $2750-$3000 range. Now to find someone that wants to buy it.

I had one in similar shape. I tried to sell it for 6 months and finally sold it for 800. I think you will be hard pressed to find somebody to pay 2500 for it.

Several other individuals have expressed an interest in it. Blue book is what the price is based from. Daniel

I'm not seeing 75%, just from the pic's it looks like it's got a couple of new screws and the triggers don't seem to have the same finish as the rest of the gun. Could just be the pic's.

I have not seen anything that was different from the other pics I have seen on other websites. The guru that looked at it did not see any anomalies. The right trigger hammer spring is broken but expert said that was normal for these guns and a simple fix.
