Deer milk
Last week I shot a doe and noticed it was holding milk when field dressing it. So I poked a small hole and had a sip of it. Wasn't bad! Have any of you guys ever tried deer milk?

No, but I tried milk from a two legged doe once and it was nasty!
I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Ever heard of pasteurization?
I’d give it a shot....

You should have checked the diet. Was probably eating acorns...
No sense of adventure....

I can’t believe anyone would do this or admit to it.

Lol, My thought too...
Took a 4 legged doe opening weekend with a little milk dribble but I must admit it did not cross my mind to try it. 🤔

Re: Deer milk - 11/16/19 03:05 AM
Never thought to try it. I wouldn’t be opposed to it.
For those that are braver than me, is it anything like goat milk? I was raised on goat milk. Not sure that one is any weirder than the other.
People drink rain deer milk and camel milk....
Deer milk has to be better than soy milk...

I'm just hoping it was milk, considering the bucks are in full on rut.

Why not? Milk from many mammals is widely marketed. You might start a trend. If it was in a carton at Walmart, all of us would try it.
Good grief, this is a joke, right. Shoot a deer, and then suckle it? What's next, the dog? lol

I just wonder how adventurous the OP was with that defenseless doe

I think the oddest part isn’t so much trying a does milk, as much as trying a dead does milk. I mean, the dead part makes a difference here

I grew up on raw cows milk, could not stand the stuff, my mom made me drink it, would wait till finished my meal, "Kenny drink your milk", I would drink as much as I could, hold the rest in my mouth and hurried leave the table and make for the back door and spit.

Tell me the truth, did you ever think you'd be providing a bit of "devils advocate" for someone drinking a dead does milk?

Re: Deer milk - 11/16/19 04:47 PM
Is this the hunting forum or the big queasy men's forum? We've been living on raw milk for over 20,000 years and all of a sudden in the last 50-60 years we've forgotten who we are? We ate raw meat, raw veggies, raw bug's, drank water from any source we could find. Any time raw milk in any form could be had it was taken, native Americans were making cheese thousands of years ago. ""Weren't no cows or horses back then". Mouse milk I hear is the best but damn it's expensive.

I could see it being good. I’ve ate and drank a lot of stuff that most wouldn’t. For some reason people look at certain animals as off limits, even though it’s still meat, or milk in this instance. I think the only food I draw the line at is balut

Re: Deer milk - 11/18/19 02:20 PM
Balut........I'm with you on that one. But I'll try most anything that's Fried. As any true Texan would.
Dead deer milk....I think I will have to pass on that one.....But I would also pass on dead cow milk.

Gonna be kind of hard to get it live on the hoof or off the teet. I’m guessing she wasn’t dead long enough for it to matter. Heck, as soon as milk exit any animals body it starts to spoil, alive or dead

Re: Deer milk - 11/18/19 04:55 PM
I find nothing wrong with this. I bet most of youins don't eat the hear of the deer either.
native Americans were making cheese thousands of years ago.
About the only real possibility for that would be from camelid (llamas, alpacas, vicunas in South America) milking in South America and there are only historic accounts (after western contact) of cheese making there. I know of no archaeological evidence of cheese making in the Americas prior to European contact and entry of domesticated livestock. The world's oldest archaeologically discovered cheese dates back 3300 years to Egypt.
I spent 25 years in the field of zooarchaeology here in North America. I can't recall cheese or evidence of cheese being a topic of consideration. Maybe you know something I don't know, but prior to European contact, I have never heard of New World cheeses being present or identified from thousands of years ago.

Who wants to milk a bison?
Probably won't end well. I think deer jump too high, run too fast.

Right. I ain't never eat deer ear.
This thread is just wrong.
You know if you chase em' around for a while before you shoot you can get butter, that's what the Indians did for breakfast for thousands of years for their toast.

When I stayed in the Philippines, the group of friends I made always new where to find good balut. I had to have had a few redhorse beers first. I guess deer, goat, and sheep milk can't be all bad.
Here, hold my beer, and watch this!

I'll go with Tommy Boy , and take your word for it....I can get a hell of a good look at a T-Bone steak by sticking my head up a bull's [censored], but I'd rather take the butcher's word for it.
