How to make your own 55 gal sprayer for $125 - 10/09/19 01:38 PM

I have had a couple of people ask me what type of sprayer I use, so I thought I would post it here also in case others have had the same problem as me. Please jump in and add comments about what you use.
I am totally inept when it comes to tools and making stuff, so If I can put this together, so can you. It is very simple to make. I went through two sprayers that I bought, one at tractor supply and one at Atwoods in 3 years. They just don't hold up. I paid $299 for each one. Hose's rotted, tank got a hole in it from bouncing over the ground full of water, tires went flat from weight of water. Just did not hold up.
So, here is what I came up with and it cost me about $125 and I have used it for the last 3 years. Now that cost is not completely accurate
as I already had one of the main parts.
A battery jump starter to run the 12v pump. . https://www.autozone.com/miscellane...-battery-charger-jump-starter/298616_0_0 Of course any 12v battery would work also.

Now here is what I had to buy.
1. 55 gallon plastic barrel...$15
2. two 6' hoses...$12
3. two 4' sections of pvc, two joint sections of pvc, two water sprinkler heads,(not the whole head, just the dial part), and a T section of pvc that had a hose connection. $15
4. A water pump..$80... https://www.autozone.com/miscellane...-battery-charger-jump-starter/298616_0_0

I ran one hose to the barrel from the pump, and one hose from the pump to my pvc sprayer. I hope the photos can give you a better ideal of what I am talking about. You can also make this a spot sprayer by buying a longer hose and a nozzle and spraying from cab of sXs or truck.

Sweet. I'm planting a fruit and nut wildlife orchard and I can attest to the commercial spray rigs not holding up. I have a Fimco (Tractor Supply brand) 30 gallon pull behind sprayer and the same thing happened within months (hole in the tank from bouncing around, flat tires, etc...).

That's pretty slick, I have all the parts except for the sprayer heads. Where did you get them at? That will be a lot quicker than the backpack i use to kill the poison ivy crop i have...

All the water hoses and pvc stuff for the sprayer at Home Depot. The pump at Northern Tools. The 55 gallon barrel on Craigslist.

Nice job. I thank you for keeping me from pulling the trigger on a PTO-based Chinese one at Tractor Supply.
Have you tried running the pump straight off the Mule battery?

I've done this via the DC plug of my ATV. The only downside is the motor has to be running on mine.

No, I have not, Not sure if it would work since my mule 2005, runs off a 6 volt battery and the pump runs off 12 volts. My mule is so old that I don't
have any plugs at all on it.

Awesome idea.

I have one thing to add that would be easy and cheap.

Between your pump and sprayer I'd install a T fitting with a valve on the side to the sprayer. From the center of the T I'd run a hose back into the tank with another valve. That way you can circulate it to help mix your chemicals.

If you wanted to get REAL fancy you could throw on another T with a hose to a hand-held wand with a long enough hose to reach to the cab of your truck (I'm lazy and spraying fences in the AC sounds good).
