Saskatchewan Hunt - 10/06/19 12:46 AM

Headed to Saskatoon in a few weeks for a whitetail. Any pointers for flying there with a rifle? Already have all my forms, case etc.

1)Keep a copy of both TSA and your airline’s rules for flying with a firearm with you;
2)Follow them;
3)Remove the bolt and put some sort of lock on the rifle - makes them feel better;
4)Lock every latch on your case;
5)Carry a 4457 Form for your rifle for coming back;
6)Go ahead and pre-submit your permit on the internet so all you have to do is pay the fee;
7)Carry ammo in separate, checked, bag;
8)Be nice to everyone involved in the process - even the jerks.

That’s a start. smile

If you ever had a DUI or any criminal charges filed against you anytime in your past, be sure to have the court records with you showing that you served your time, paid your fines and that it's no longer an issue. My DUI was in 91 and when I tried to get into Saskatchewan for a hunt in 2001, they refused me entry until I could prove that I had done everything that the court ordered. It took two days to do this, and when I gave them the paperwork, they charged me $200 to process my paperwork. My buddy didn't have as good of luck getting the paperwork on his Marijuana charge from the 80's and was not allowed entry into Canada, so we turned around and drove back home.

The Airport in Saskatoon is one of the few that you can Pre-Fill your Form 5589 and Pre-Pay your $25 Firearm Declaration. Saves you quite a bit of time and hassle by faxing your form ahead of time to the Airport Customs Office. I was just there in September for a Duck/Goose hunt and it was all pretty painless. As NP mentioned, be sure and keep your Form 4457 for reentry into the States. Enjoy your hunt. Whitetail are the size of Moose up there.

Would shipping a firearm to the outfitter be an alternative method?

I went several years ago. Temps went down to -25F below 0. The cold is stunning. When it went up to 15F it felt like a day at the beach in comparison. Buy the tear open heating packs, enough for 4 - 6 per day. I cannot remember what it is called, but Cabelas sells a tube like thing to put both hands into that holds a couple of the heating packs. Buy one. It was invaluable on the coldest day. Also, the Elmer Fudd style hat with ear covers is a worthwhile investment. I am glad I went and may go again someday, but that crushing cold made me appreciate South Texas deer hunting even more. Keep expectations realistic. 160” deer are not behind every bush any more than they are here. It is a neat place, but be prepared for brutal cold and hope it doesn’t happen while you are there. Good luck!

I go to Alberta every year and depending on when you go, it can be brutal! The first 2 years I went I wore just bass pro/cabelas gear and froze my butt off. Its worth spending the money and getting good gear for Canada. I went with custom gear from grey wolf woolens out of Wisconsin and haven't had a problem since. I hunted the bowzone last year out of a tree stand (sun up - sun down) and didnt get cold at all.
Pack boots are a must and NO cotton socks or tops/bottoms! I prefer to walk in from a long distance to not disturb the area so I wear literally my base layer bottom and carry all of my clothing in. Its cold at first being shirtless on the walk in but if you sweat in those conditions, your're done after a few hours. Especially, if you're hunting out of a tree stand and not a box blind/heaters.
They're serious up there about guns so pay before hand and save the time. They will be asking about your guide and the outfitter so be prepared to answer several questions if your outfitter did anything against the rules etc. I had this happen with my first/second year with an outfitter up there. Dude was a joke.... I've moved on since to a different outfitter.

I still might go up there this year but have 3 small kids so its tough these days. To be honest, 160's aren't behind every tree but if you wait and pass on those deer smaller bucks, you never know what you'll see. Only one year have I not seen a good buck buck but im also willing to eat a tag for the chance to shoot a booner.

GOOD LUCK, pm me with any other questions.

Good luck Txflip! Have a friend that has hunted probably every province up there at one time or another, he said never forget hand warmers grin

Said he didn't know it could get that cold sitting still, but warms up fast when the deer move.

100% agree on the form 4457!..... I did it when I went to Canada for a Moose hunt; some buddies of mine went to Alberta for a goose hunt and did not get the 4457 forms.

Customs tried to charge them import duty on their shotguns when returning to the U.S.!
