Young fawns in feed pen with does

Young fawns in feed pen with does - 09/11/19 01:20 AM

This is the youngest fawns I have ever had in a feed pen. I had to switch this pen out 4-5 yrs ago now due to a bull getting over the hog panels. I went with 50" tall cattle panels to solve the bull getting in but they had a the larger squares. I did cut down the top two spacings to about 40" to allow deer easier access points. I did this in 4 areas around the pen. First time since I switched the panels out I have had fawns inside the pen. Very young ones that I guess crawled thru the large squares. You can see by their size how late the rut is in many areas of South Texas.

That's awesome stx! Very late. Just got photos of 3 new ones today. But they aren't near that tiny. up

Mommas are slick, too.

Wow they are tiny!

Looks like Sweeney's but ours are all internal so no varmint stuff needed and throw a mile. One with original timer still.

That is a 18+ yr old All Season 800# feeder. It has a timer they sold for a while that is in a metal box...not The Timer they use now or HCR timer they used in the past. It has their original small varmint cage but I had to add a large homemade one due to really bad coon problems on that place in Live Oak county. That old feeder would throw a long distance if not for the two varmint cages.

Very cool....amazing when you see them that little...it makes me wonder how any of them ever make it. Resilient to say the least!

I was amazed a couple years ago. My parents had some fawns in their back yard which is 48 inch chain link fenced. The does have the fawns in the neighborhood and leave them there (no dog). We were going out of town and they were watching my dog so I went to run the fawns out so they didn't have trouble with the dog. I was on my way to open the gate and heard them out when two of them cleared the fence like it was nothing.

No doubt it is amazing.

I feel the same way when I sit in the deer blind on a cold icy morning in south texas and see a fluffed up little bird that cant weigh more than an ounce or two that survived all night exposed to the elements. Wild critters are tuffer than we ever will be.

Definitely much bigger capacity than our Sweeneys. Only thing I don't like is need a ladder. Our other 6 are all platforms. That galvanized metal will last forever it seems. Plan to knockdown the broomweed?

I switched out the 8' tall legs when I bought those feeders to the All Season protein feeder legs that are much shorter. I can back my truck in and fill them off the tailgate. I may spray the broomweeds or just let the deer stomp them down. I never shoot inside the pens and that one is 50" tall. I feed corn outside the pen and can kill any buck that comes to the feeder on the corn outside the pen.
