Feeder Pen

Feeder Pen - 01/03/19 03:11 AM

Can a feeder pen be constructed well with 300' of welded wire, 12 Ga. 36-42" high, strung tight and attached to t-posts every 5-6' in a circle? No cows, just deer and pigs??? What size diameter would 300' provide?

Got the diameter, 95' give or take or a little over 32 yards, about right size....So about 50-60 t-posts...

It would be roughly 75' across it. Smaller pigs can still get into through the stagings. I know this from when I used cattle panels and had smaller pigs getting in through the 6"x8" spacings.

Yeah, they get through my 6"x8" as well, the babies, but not usual from what my cameras show me when the adults can't. Can I get it tight enough, strong enough to keep the adult pigs out ranch??

Yes, but the ones I have seen were built square in South Texas out of the 2x4 welded wire 36" tall. They had a barb on the top and bottom also with T-post every 5' or so that were cut level with top of wire. I was reading it as using the concrete remesh for slabs not the 2x4 welded wire. It would be much faster and easier to build out of cattle or hog panels in a round circle that would be much stronger. Use less T-post.

I'm not sure how you're going to string it tight if your frame is a circle.

Sounds like alot of work with unpredictable results. Go to J&N in Graham and get some of their hog panels. It doesn't keep the little shotes out, so if you want them out too, there's several other wire fence designs you could wire tie down low.

As much as I like and as much business as I do with J&N, I'd pick up hog panels & T posts from tractor supply and save $$.

Unless you have posts in the ground deep & sturdy enough to use as actual tension posts welded wire/ field fencing will loosen, sag & fail a lot faster than you think.
You'll do all this & in 2 - 3 years you'll have a bigger mess on your hands.
There is no way to get welded wire/ field fence tight enough using only T posts as tension posts.
Anything that comes in a roll has to be stretched & tensioned properly.

An example; I use 4" steel pipe driven to yield / usually 4' - almost 5' in ground - 2 7/8" pipe brace over to another 4" welded to make H brace for tension, sure you can use 2 3/8 pounded to yield or set in concrete for tension posts. That is for barbwire or field fence, I don't like building fence so I choose a method that will outlast me.

With as much rain & ground moisture as Young has lately T posts will be easy to drive. 10 panels is bare minimum, more is better, I usually use 14 - 16.
Over lap each panel one square, T post in center of overlap so as to tie overlap of two panels to T post, then T posts every 8' ish / in middle between.
Cut one panel in half to make a gate leaving the horizontal wires as long as possible, leave 2 at top, 2 in middle & 2 on bottom to bend around T post to make gate hinge, cut the rest off flush.

Hog panel feeder pens really are very simple, fast & easy to make especially when the ground is soft from the rains.

Welded wire / field fence is a great choice if you do it right, hard to make anything but a square or rectangle, must have deep sturdy wood or steel posts for tension & bracing.

Why would you want to drive 50-60 T posts ?? I use 9-10 hog panels with 16-18 T posts. Much easier work and will last. I would not cut corners here DQ.

12 hog panels. If there's cattle, go ahead and put a t-post at the end and in the middle of each panel. With soft ground you can be done in a couple of hours. If aggressive cattle, run a string of barb wire too. Better, so they never get in in the first place!

Yep. X2 on the top strand of barb wire. Once a cow jumps in and gets a taste of the corn, they sometimes get addicted to that stuff. I've had it happen. Sold the cows. Neighbor had a large bull jump the wire and it ripped his 'dingus' off. OUCH!

Are you only placing a corn feeder in it or a protein feeder as well? Bucks do need extra room to feel comfortable but...if you are only using a corn feeder, 8 panels will give you a 40 diameter pen which should be more than adequate for what you want! If you can afford going bigger, then great. Luck!

Use the hog panels, easier and much more sturdy.

Re: Feeder Pen - 01/04/19 05:40 AM

Our does run in groups of 5 or less. They don't ever get along with other groups. Matriarch runs the ship in each group. We don't have deer density to justify huge pens like that. I have more activity at my 7 panel pen than 11 because it is in a better area. It is 7 because that is all that will fit there at 120 yards. It is a deer highway for our area with creeks on two sides of it 20 and 100 yards away. We have 6, 7, 8 and 11 panels pens. The 6 panel see the best bucks early in Sept and Oct and then they move during rut. In November, every buck runs the does off. Since we penned them, our 4 non penned feeders don't produce much and don't have much hogs during the season. Probably need to move a few after 15 years. What is your goal?

I am running 3k lbs of corn a month on my ranch. The cows do not bother it. No feeder pens necessary.

Buy the cattle panels framed in square tubing, no T Posts needed.

I can send you 6200+ pictures of cows, for 1 month, surrounding my unpenned feeder at every feeding.
