Who here has eaten Mountain Lion?

Who here has eaten Mountain Lion? - 10/19/18 07:01 PM

A friend of mine just got on a lease in Brewster county, for Mule deer. The ranch owner has told us of many lion sightings, and we are instructed to make a shot on one if we see one. I've heard it's good eating, and hate to waste the meat, if so. We are a little weired-ed out about eating a cat, but are willing to if it's good meat.

What say you?

Steve Rinella with Meateater brags about it and probably has a recipe for it on his website, he says it tastes like pork.

Cable from the Lonestar Outdoor show loves it and I think even his wife liked it.

I had it at one of those Game Warden pot luck dinners. Was pretty good. Definitely way better than bobcat.

Mule deer is first, then maybe that's a possibility. We've got access to some awfully big country. There be mountains in Texas...

I have not eaten Mountain Lion. I have not seen a Mountain Lion. But, I think my time is coming. And I will try to kill it. And then, eat it.

The trackers in Africa all eat African Lion when one is killed. It is believed to help them with certain responsibilities at home. At my age, I need all the help I can get.

Couple ranches I know down south wait until they get a couple hanging out then they will run them with dogs.
I called one in to 11 yards this year with an elk bugle. Pretty cool really wish I had a tag.

I have seen a few mountain lions, but have never shot one. If I did I would have everyone over for dinner.
Maybe a few mountain lion burgers, some stir fry, and as Nugent said some "mountain lion steak"
Maybe even some kitty poppers for appetizers.

I have eaten porcupine. A friend convinced me that them quills were guarding some succulent meat. He was wrong.
But then I may have shot a big bull porker during the rut.

First of all Dip Stick it is Bugling and if you can read it starts off with Fireman lease in Brewster County hunting mule deer and the landowner telling them to shoot mountain lions if they see them. Then BoBo says (I know a hounds men... he will travel for right price) He also talks about ranches further south assuming still in Texas and not Mexico where I do not know if you need a tag there or not.

And again if you can read he said he called one in to about 11 yards with an Elk bugle, not sure if he was talking Mulie in that case I think his Texas license has a tag for that season, cannot imagine needing another one or he may have called a MT Lion or an Elk either way no special tag needed for any of them to my knowledge.

So if he wasn't Bubbling as you say roflmao in Texas, where in this thread do you see he was hunting or bugling in another state confused2
So pull your SMDH out of the flush and for once try minding your own business loser8

Re: Who here has eaten Mountain Lion? - 10/20/18 11:22 AM

There's plenty of elk in Texas. I killed two cows last year, and it was low fence. No tags, no season.

No tag needed for mountain lion, no season on mountain lion. Same rules as coyotes, in Texas. I'm betting BoBo was talking about Mexico or another northern state where you do need a tag. If a mountain lion is within 11 yards of me, I might need a Paramedic. Oh wait...

I am pretty sure he was for it is obvious that BoBo is a smart man, well traveled and has probably hunted in more states and countries than I have ever been to.
I have not hunted elk or mountain lion anywhere and know there is both here in Texas. The last I heard you did not need a tag for either in Texas so I was just asking the question to make sure, it was certainly not a dig at BoBo.

Unfortunately there are those on here that love to create drama and then talk about how they loathe it wife

Enjoy Brewster county and please post pics up And if a mountain lion was within 11 yards of me, at the very least I would need a change of britches laugh

Re: Who here has eaten Mountain Lion? - 10/20/18 02:28 PM

Do you eat deer and elk, even though you are not starving?

Plenty of meat available at the grocery store.
Posted By: fouzman

Re: Who here has eaten Mountain Lion? - 10/20/18 02:33 PM

I sure do. They're game animals and save me lots of $ at the grocery store year-round. Plus it's healthier red meat. Don't get me wrong Fireman, I respect you for wanting to eat whatever you kill. But I see no reason to eat cat, when you're in Mule Deer country. Do you eat coyotes that you shoot?

Re: Who here has eaten Mountain Lion? - 10/20/18 02:42 PM

I have the hounds and will travel for nothing. I will want to make sure that the neighboring ranchers are okay with it as well. Sometimes, when you get on an older track, the lion and dogs will go further than you think they will before treeing or putting on a rock. Some of the lions in the low brush country will really run, unlike most lions in the big timber country.
Adios,
Gary

Sorry to confuse everyone

I was in CO this last sept(30 days ago actually) w/ TXSHNTR with an archery elk and bear tag.

Mid day and we where in bottom of canyon. I had talked Dave out of killing a cow about an hour before, and was second guessing that badley. We had Just filled up water and begin eating lunch. I decided to let some lazy bugles out and 4 min later had a cat come sneaking in. I let him get to 11.2 yards before I let him know I was there. After he hadn’t left after the third hay cat, I started to fumble for my pistol that was in my chest harness. He finally walked off and I didn’t have to kill him and go through a CPWS investigation for shooting a ML out of season and no tag.

Dave was about 30 yards away watching it all go down. He thought is was hilarious, he said he had never heard nervousness in my voice ever, then that third -ha cat came. In end cat would of got me if he wanted and I know dave would of tackled it to save me,

I hope this clarifies things.

Why not? Why is ok to eat cows, pigs, deer, fish, chickens and turkeys

ML is actually good, to me it was a sweeter meat. Only negative I could find is it’s like bear and needs to be cooked past 130/140 degrees. No medium rare or rare

Don't eat coyotes, I don't even eat feral hogs. Buzzards gotta eat too, same as worms.

But, since I've heard Mountain Lion is good, I hate to waste all that meat. Heard too many times Aoudad is no good, I'll leave that meat for the mountain lions.

Re: Who here has eaten Mountain Lion? - 10/20/18 05:20 PM

Not me, but it's on the list. Don't understand people who have hangups on food. I'll even eat a Big Mac, if I have to, even though I find them about as appetizing as roadkilled possum. I aim to have as broad and interesting an experience as possible.

Reminds me of a Chinese fella who told me I eat like a Chinese person. He said they'll eat anything. He's not like that, just eats chicken and tofu. He was turning his nose up at my BBQ squirrel.

I had Mountain Lion in "7 Critter Stew". All the meat was cut in small cubes, some were tougher than others.
I was told by a medical doctor not to eat predators or monkeys..

May sound too simple but just because it taste good does not mean I will eat it. I don't eat dogs or mammal that are predators that strictly eat meat. Anything else is fit for the grill!

Ben Lilly claimed mountain lion as his favorite and he hunted everything all over the South and West. People didn’t associate them with domesticated house cats back then any more than we associate a catfish with a goldfish.

I’ve heard from several that it was good so I would try it and form my own opinion.

I ate it once. It is white meat, I was surprised by that. Although white, it's not like chicken or pork, it's different. It's certainly eatable but I would rather eat chicken or pork. I gave it a chance but I don't think I ever got past the fact that I was eating cat.
