Colorado Wapiti - 10/04/18 03:08 PM

I am heading up to the Gunnison area for a DIY elk hunt in a couple weeks. Has anyone already made the trip for archery season? Would love to hear about the conditions up there this year.

My buddy just got back on the 22nd...Hot and Dry, never heard one bugle! Y'all will be hunting the 2nd rifle i assume, so you should get some cooler weather.

Good Luck and have fun!

Coworker got a nice bull with a bow north of Montrose near Delta a few weeks ago. No guide, just a few Texas boys out hoping for the best. Said they heard lots of bugling.

We will be south of Gunnison. Hopefully the weather the next few weeks pushes some of the elk down. Apparently they are expecting some snow.

We're leaving on the 16 for Unit 61, north of Chama and east of Pagosa Springs. We've been told it's in good shape, calling for snow next week.

For future reference: I have a cabin in Pagosa Springs that I rent out if any group is ever interested. Sleeps 12.

I would consider that bigger than a cabin, real nice.

I hunted GMU 67 south of Gunnison with a group of buddies for 2nd rifle season without a guide. Despite the full moon and warmer than normal conditions most days, I was in elk every single hunt except for the first morning. I will say that I push harder than many and walk over 15 miles a day in the high country. I passed on an easy shot on one small and one decent. And, I got really close to getting shots on two bigger bulls. My patience and persistence was rewarded on the last evening when I was able to harvest this incredible 6x6.
