Bear mauls bowhunter - 09/05/18 12:34 PM

Although I certainly support the hunting of animals with a bow I sometimes wonder about guys who choose to hunt dangerous animals with a bow. I've seen a couple of shows where bow hunters hunted dangerous animals with them and just about all of them approached the animals with a healthy level of caution/fear which they should. I am simply not sold on the idea of hunting a dangerous animal with a bow for any number of reasons, needing to get so close to the animal in order to make a clean ethical kill shot, the difficultly of a quick accurate follow up shot and the lack of stopping power being a couple. And if someone is going to hunt a dangerous animal they definitely need to have a partner that has a gun that can stop a charging bear I would think...I wonder if it is legal to carry a firearm in the below scenario?

I've taken 2 black bears with crossbow at 11 and 17 yards and do have to admit I like the close excitement. I've had several black bear encounters very close on the ground and it gets your heart pumping for sure. No backup person or firearm and handgun firearm laws where I was hunting were very strict and really not feasible. It sort of like same reason some hunt the Africa Dangerous game up close, but they almost always have a back up gun shooter.

sorry, but this instance was just an example of poor hunting awareness. 2 things regardless of species. Always approach a downed animal cautiously (extreme caution with dangerous game) and always have a follow up shot prepared.
