Plant ID, Deer Browse??

Anybody know what these plants are?? We have a lot of them on the ranch. Are they utilized by deer as browse?

looks like milk weed. Only thing that likes it is Monark butterflys.

Some variety of milkweed is likely. As you can tell from their height, nothing has eaten them. Time for roundup or shredder.

Thanks guys after looking at different varieties of milkweed, I think it might be Broadleaf Milkweed!

If it’s in a decent area and not harming anything then there’s no reason to spray it. I’ve actually purposely planted a few around the yard. It’s not invasive and it’s a host plant to lots of butterflies and other bugs. Most native plants and bugs have more benefits than downsides.

Yeah I find it in different areas of the ranch primarily around dead mesquites it seems. It might be beneficial to spray it at somepoint since it doesn't seem to benefit the deer at all. But its also not hurting anything so it will be at the bottom of the to-do list aka might never get done lol!

Monarch butterflies need this to reproduce. We actually show pics in our game mngmt. book that we turn into the tax office. Anything that helps wildlife we take pics of. It helps us maintain our wildlife valuation.

I've seen that on our place and wondered what is. Never thought to check with the THF experts. Think I'll leave some for the butterflies.

Disagree all you want. Morons around here (and their insurance companies) get to pay big bucks every year because of careless use of 2,4-D and dicamba. 2,4-D becomes EXTREMELY volatile in hot weather and can "walk" a LONG ways. Just because you, "hit the trunk" doesn't mean that it stays there. The general rule around here is if you are spraying 2,4-D after April 15th, you are playing with fire...

I used to spray at least 200 gallons, sometimes up to 600 gallons, 3-4 days a week, from April-Oct. Srayed medians, fields, HOA properties, residential, commercial, by hand, with tractor. Never killed, or damaged, anything I didn’t intend to. Guess I played with a hell of a lot of fire.

Around here, if you let a pasture go, it will become a forrest. If I accidentally kill one of the several thousand hackberry trees on my place, I don't give a crap. Plus, I too have been spraying what I please in 100° weather for years. The only time I have killed a tree was when I meant to, and that was with Remedy and diesel.

So, I still disagree with your broad brush statement. How many geographical, and ecological regions are there in Texas?
