Ruger Axis Hunt

Ruger Axis Hunt - 06/10/18 03:21 PM

Last week, I was invited to go down to Garven Store and hunt Axis with Paul Pluff, Heath Putnam and Graham Rockwell from Ruger along with my longtime hunting buddy, Larry Weishuhn. We were hunting with Ruger Redhawks in .44 Mag, topped with Trijicon RMR sights and shooting Hornady 240 grain XTP ammo.
While I have killed a few axis does for meat, this was my first hunt where I was targeting an axis buck specifically. We had a great time and the Ivey Ranch has an excellent population of Axis and I was presented a shot at one at 65 yards but the buck was quartering to me as he was nervous about some other plains game that were behind me. Like a Rookie, I hustled my shot and bullet passed under the target.
It was a great time with good food, a beautiful ranch and most of all great fellowship. I must admit that the 100 degree temps made it a little tough on an old fat man.
Adios,
Gary

Had a good time and ended up with an axis buck as one of the guys from Ruger took up a rifle and accidently killed two bucks. He was hunting with the rancher and they saw a buck with two does. The rancher said to kill the buck, so the hunter shot. The does and buck broke running to the left which led to heavy cover. They reappeared crossing an opening, two does and then a buck that stopped just before reaching the cover. Thinking that the buck was the one that had already been hit, the rancher instructed the hunter to shoot. The hunter dropped the buck in it's tracks. Upon examining the buck, the rancher decided that this was not the first buck that the hunter shot at and upon further inspection, found the first buck about twenty steps from where it was shot.
I hauled the hams and shoulders down to Schotts in Helotes to get a little sausage made.
Adios,
Gary

Schott's is a great processor, Mike and his boys do a outstanding job. Cody just had an axis processed from Schott's and we made some burgers out of the ground axis and it was excellent. I'm glad you didn't go home empty handed. Let me know when your picking up and I will buy you lunch.

BowsnRods,
I will give you a call when headed that way. I am guessing it will be about two weeks. I am trying to get back to Navajo Rez for a lion hunt as I still have a tag and the season runs through the end of June. My dogs are out of shape as I have been too busy to get them out much lately. If I can get them legged up a little, will go back up there in about two weeks.
Adios,
Gary
