Turkey hunting with kids - 03/09/18 12:34 AM

Taking my kids turkey hunting Saturday. Went and got them some turkey shells for the shotgun

They were asking me how well a turkey load works on a gobbler when it dawned on me I’ve never killed one with a shotgun.

Killed them with .22’s, deer rifles and my bow but never with a shotgun.

Almost feels like I’m doing something backward

Aim for the head, shotguns don't work that well if you body shoot them.

Use a full choke! Or a turkey choke. We just use full chokes and take shots within 30 yards. Shoot at a piece of card board with a turkey drawn on it. Have extra shells ready. Seen one take a bit more than 3. Watch for snakes of course. Have fun.

Yes, use the tighter chokes and as previously stated, pattern your gun to see where the majority of the shot is impacting. In most guns, the majority of the shot will be in the upper half of your pattern. For this reason, I always aim at the neck and never shoot at a bird while in full strut as this does not present a good target.
