Own Mineral Mix

Own Mineral Mix - 01/19/18 04:46 PM

I am new to the mineral game. I am going to create my own mineral mix of 200 pounds. I have 4 spots that I have found to put the mix. How much of the mineral mix should I place at each location? Is 50 pounds of mix enough or should I make an additional 200 pounds of mix? Thanks

We put out a salt/mineral mix for our livestock. Even with cows, it takes them weeks to go through 100lbs. 50lbs per spot should be more than enough.

how long do you think 50 pounds will last?

If you dont have cattle, I would only put out 20-30lbs in each spot and refresh in 3-4 weeks.

How long will it last? Depends on the number of mouths and how deprived of minerals they are.

Are you planning to put it in something or just pour it on the ground? We use troughs or tubs for ours since we are putting out so much and have so many mouths to feed. If you're just planning on making a mineral spot on the ground, I'd go with Rickym's suggestion of about 20 lbs, and refresh it about every 4-6 weeks. Honestly I bet it lasts several months unless you have hogs.

Here's a recipe I've used before if you're interested.

Ingredients: Makes 200 lbs. for about $23.00

1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $11.00 you need one bag.

2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loose kind without the medications.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $5.00 you need two bags.

1 part Stock salt
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $2.00 you need one bag.

Directions:

Keep ingredients separate until ready to put to use. Mix all together well.

Dig or tear up a circle in the soil about 36 inches wide and about 6 inches deep.

Mix all of your mineral mixture with the soil except for about 2 pounds.

Water area lightly – about 2 gallons depending on how wet the soil is to begin with

After watering, let dry for an hour then scatter the remaining 2 pounds on top of the spot
