300 blackout questions. - 12/26/17 09:04 PM

I’m interested in buying a 300 blackout, give me the goods and the bads.

What’s out there that would be good to hunt with either rifle or semi.

Built an AR in 300 a few years ago and taken quite a few deer, yotes, and coons with it. Lots of fun but after about 200 yards you're about out of power. I usually hunt at shorter ranges than that, anything longer I'll choose something else to hunt with. Obviously with an AR you can build/get what you want. Hear a lot of good things about the Ruger Ranch in 300.

How much do you think you have in building the 300? What grain do you shoot. I won’t be shooting over 150 yards I don’t think.

You could probably put one together for $600 or less if you look around. The sky is the limit though. I have about $2500 in mine counting optics and the cerakote job. 150 yards and in and you’ll be fine with proper shot placement. Also have a bolt action Remington 700 that shoots very well. I’ve only shot 110 - 135 grainers out of each. Would like to try some of the heavier bullets like the Hornady 208 grainers and see how they act.

I have been hunting with a 300 blk out for the last 5 years. I've taken deer, turkey, pigs, and yotes, plus all kinds of small critters. For basic hunting, it does fine. It's great out of an AR-15 platform, and is a noticeable upgrade from 223. I run an AR for my night hunting and a bolt gun for stand hunting. I love it.

A 125 grain SST, BT or SP is a great bullet weight for good speed and expansion. Mushroom shaped expansion is the norm with these weights. You can drop down to the 110 V-max, and it also work well. I have used the 115 Berger on several occasions, and it provides deep penetration on big pigs. I have used them all.

All above is good/correct info, you can spend as little or as much as you want kinda like anything else lol. Like Nontypical said, you could prob go as cheap as $600 if you shop around for deals and stick to basic/non-upgraded parts. If you wanna go with fancier barrels, handguards, bolt carrier groups, charging handles and triggers; it can add up quick.

Get one of these, .300 B/O from S&W. Comes with a 5R Barrel, mine shoots fantastic. Within it's range it's a killer.

I got me one of them. It is called a 300 Whisper. (same as 300 B/O). They guy did not know they were one in the same. Got it CHEAP! Shoot 110 grain to 130 grain bullets and it can take anything out to 200 yards.

Re: 300 blackout questions. - 12/28/17 06:29 PM

So 300 whisper and 300 blackout are just different names for the same round? How accurate is your smith and Wesson?
Where did you find it for sale?

I build a 300bo and a 6.8 spc ll both shoot great ouy to 200-250 yds with no problems. I use hornady stt 120 gr for the 6.8 and full boar110gr for 300 i have them both zero out at 200 yds. Hogs go down with no problem, wating on the buck for this season to show up.

How hard is it to build one? What would it run to build one?

Re: 300 blackout questions. - 12/28/17 07:31 PM

if you think that you will be building more in the future it would be less expensive to build your own uppers too, would need a vice block and barrel nut wrench. Then you can shop around for different barrels, calibers etc. and build different uppers for your lower.

Get an upper and lower from palmetto state armory. Pretty inexpensive. I have zero complaints with mine.

Re: 300 blackout questions. - 12/29/17 08:25 PM

Mine was ordered direct from S&W. They do make it for public sale, it's on their website. Mine is all factory and shoots great. With some custom ammo (125 SST gr.) it will shoot <1" off of bags. If I were looking for one, I'd order from Grab a Gun and pick it up at their location in Coppell. Be sure you find the one with the 5R barrel if you want one like mine. The glass is a Burris, it had the same camo pattern, also some of the brightest, clearest glass for the $.

I dont get what the fascination is with the .300 blackout when there are so many other much better rounds available.

In an AR platform? That's what I bought, not so much the caliber.

Not so much a fascination. But in an AR15, the 300 hits 20 to 25% harder than a 556. Works well for me in areas with lots of cover where shots are commonly 10 to 100 yards. confused2

To me it's kinda like a wish I would have waiting to happen .why not .308 or 6.5 Grendel look at ballistic charts .

Re: 300 blackout questions. - 01/02/18 10:58 PM

I jumped on the 300 BO in the AR platform wagon this season and I've really enjoyed this caliber. Deer and hogs go down within 20 or 30 yards with my hand loaded 125 gr SST. I like the quick follow shots, that's actually why I went to the 300. I use to hunt with a bolt gun in 308 but I could only put down one hog and maybe get a shot at another.

I've loaded some 110 V-max in .2 increments to test. I'll do that when the weather here clears.

Re: 300 blackout questions. - 01/03/18 01:49 AM

I like my 300 had it custom built by Purple Hays guns in Lenard . But I like the Grendel better. But my favorite is .243 it is smoking fast .Great on hogs. You will like the 300 it's great at 150 yds. I like to zero at 125 yards.

I'd rather have an AR10 in .243 or .308

How much do you want to spend?

And what do you consider a "Build" some people buy a complete lower and a complete upper and pin the two together and call it a build. Others have all the tools and start from a pile of parts and springs and put it all together. Either way building an AR15 is about like playing with Legos or an Erector Set. A few simple tools like roll pin punches, hammer a set of vice grips will get you started. For a complete build you need an action block and barrel wrench as well.

You can buy .300 BLK uppers for $300-$1,500. Complete .300 BLK rifles start around $450 and go up from there. There are some companies selling .300 BLK kits for as low as $300 that all you need is a stripped AR15 lower receiver and you assemble all the parts with a few simple hand tools.

If you have a 6.5 Grendel AR15 the easiest way is to buy a complete .300 BLK upper, remove the two takedown pins and swap uppers.

Re: 300 blackout questions. - 01/03/18 01:53 PM

When the 300 came out, I wanted nothing to do with the round simply because it was the flavor of the month and everybody had to have it. I strongly resisted until I found a youth 300 savage bolt gun for a price I couldnt pass up for my son. I have to say, we love it. Hits the target hard, but not so hard on the kiddos shoulder. Suppressed it is nice and quiet. Wish I hadn't have been such a snob about it when it first became popular.

I have a 300 bo AR topped with Photon xt 4.6. Nice little combo for pig hunting, have had no issues killing things with it.

Re: 300 blackout questions. - 01/03/18 04:27 PM

A .300 was the 2nd AR that I built. The first was a 20" .223 built from used parts and a poly lower at the peak of the AR madness...

http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/4148583/1

Daughter kept it for about a year, swapped out the adjustable stock, and then traded it to a friend of ours for a 16" version.

Then she decided we needed a .300. So back to work on it, with prices still way expensive

I overpaid for the barrel, but the upper and barrel are Daniel Defense, got them together for just under $400.

The lower is Stag Arms, she wanted the one with the Deer on it. I drove to San Antonio to pick up two of those from a member here. I think they were 150 each.

I built the lpk from either Windham or White Wing website for around $30, I already had a trigger that was part of junk I acquired from the other build.

BCG was bought from PSA with the CH, I bought a $6 Chinese import extended lever from ebay to put on it.

Bushnell Dusk & Dawn 3-9x50 tops it

Nothing too fancy, If I remember right, I was in to this one for around 750 when it was all said and done.

That being said, I load 125gr Nosler BT's in LC brass. These are devastating on hogs. Due to the way our land is, we don't get a lot of chances for shots over 200 yards, and most are under 150. So far, no complaints.

I only recall one hog running very far after the shot, he ran into a dry creekbed about 20-30 yards behind him and laid down. Most take a step or two and lay down.

True when you compare 556 and light bullets, but when you compare it to a 556 shooting 70-75 grain bullets 300 black out pratically same energy.

Re: 300 blackout questions. - 01/06/18 02:55 AM

I like mine, but prefer my 6.8 better. My 300 is a 8.5" SBR topped with a Photon and it's been lethal on hogs. I prefer the Barnes Tac Tx 110 grain pills.
