Owls Make for Dirty Roommates

Owls Make for Dirty Roommates - 09/18/16 01:44 AM

Had to clear out a pair of Barn Owls earlier today from my Monarch blind in Young County. Needless to say it was quite the shocking site, about 6" of huntkill, regurgitated fur and droppings in the 4x6. The carpet made the ultimate sacrifice, was hoping it was salvageable but stunk to high heaven. Taped all the sliding windows shut tight and hope to not have that situation again..

Their mess is amazing.

We had two get into one of ours a few weeks weeks ago but it was a one way trip for them only. Our windows are on hinges and swing in. The thing that keeps them closed fell out or something so they made it in but could not get out. They died with no mess left.

I got zactly the same problem. The bottom corner of the door is eaten out by the rats and allowed enough room for the owls to get in. Need to make sure they're not in there and tack up a blocker board to keep 'em out. At least I bet there hasn't been any rats and mice in the blind. smirk

Never had an owl make a home in my box blinds, but I had a buzzard nest in one several years ago. To this day when's is raining you can still smell it in the blind.

Better finding now that in the dark one morning. Not the way I wanted to wake up. Needless to say I didn't hunt that stand that day.

Cleaned the old floor the best I could and put a new floor over the old one.

Seems like I have to do that every year or so. New carpet and a pump up sprayer with a cup of bleach and a gallon of water works wonders.

I can only imagine climbing into a tower and coming face to face with an owl, or worse being in the tower with the windows open when the owl decided to return to its nest.

Done both in the same morning... once with my wife. I climbed down and told her it was bad, she said it was ok she could tuff it out she wanted to hunt. When the sun came up and she could actually see she changed her tune rather quickly!

Must have been awesome cover scent though roflmao

Had to do that once in a 4x4 on a 10' tower. Pulled everything out, then got the Shop Vac after it running off a generator. Was incredible the number of rat and mouse skulls we found.

Our owl had 7 little owls,we let them get old enough to fly and then started to clean out 7 months of xxxxxxx, didn't go well.We ended up taking the blind down and brought it home and replaced the floor and burned the old one.It was one of those The Bynds and the plastic cleaned up nice with bleach water. They are nasty critters!
