Celebrity hunters? - 12/28/15 04:48 PM

Who has hunted or would hunt with celeb? Or how about which one would you prefer not to be in your camp? I was on hunt and Ted Nugent was there hunting and hung out with us some! All I got. Close enough to off season we need something!

Celebrities do nothing for me. I reckon they pull their britches on one leg at a time.

I guess that guys who hunt with me get to hunt with a celebrity. I'm kind of a big deal

Yeah Uncle Ted was kinda animated about some subjects when just hanging out, did seem like pretty nice guy without the cameras around.

I hunted with Greg Rodriquez a few times when he was running Mombasa Trading but that was before he got on TV. He was a really nice guy and fun to hunt with. Too bad he got himself shot and killed up in MT.

Re: Celebrity hunters? - 12/29/15 03:38 PM

I made the mistake of being on an elk hunt with one of the TV shows there also hunting elk. Everything was all about them, and making sure they got their animals, then every day they came back to the lodge with excuses why they missed the shot and how they had to get another opportunity the next day. The rest of us in camp where all treated like we where imposing on the outfitter. On another hunt, one of the running backs for the Buffalo Bills who had been in several super bowls was in camp. No gear, no binoculars, no boots and he was using a rifle with open sites. He wasn't prepared at all, but the guides where killing themselves to get him on game. I don't remember him ever getting a shot, they kept saying he couldn't climb at all and had to keep stopping to rest.

If I know there is going to be a TV show there, or a celebrity of some kind is going to be there, I wont go there!!!!!

Re: Celebrity hunters? - 12/29/15 03:47 PM

I have hunted with a bunch of people guiding and hunting both. The worst ones are the tv shows with the so called experts. If I have the choice I would rather guide the guy who is hunting because he loves it and he worked hard to get there.

I want to hunt with good people. I don't care about their status in society.

Nor mine either. I've shared three camps with TV production outfits. The VIP's guide will likely be the outfitter himself, freshly shaved and wearing a clean suit of clothes. The other guides and camp help will be at their beck and call too. If a superb trophy animal has been spotted in the area, this animal will be hunted exclusively by the VIP and off limits to the other hunters (who are paying customers, while the VIP's hunt is usually gratis).

As part of my normal "feeling out" and booking procedure nowadays, I ask if commercial filming will be done on our hunt. If so, I will look for another date or even another outfit.

I Elk hunted in Colorado with Lance Berkman about 10 years ago. He's a good man and was a pleasure to hunt with. He's very down to earth and he even invited my son to WT hunt with him on his ranch. My son had an incredible hunt with him! Baker

I hunt with Ted at least once a year (on my ranches).

I understand that he rubs some the wrong way (and fully understand why). But, there is not any one person who advocates more for gun owners and hunters than he does. He earns my respect there.

And in camp he's not a celebrity. He guts his own animals and lends a hand in all facets of the hunt. He is a hoot in camp and can tell some of the most awesome stories you've ever heard.

He's a good friend.

I could care less about hunting with a celeb of any kind...if I could choose someone to hunt with it'd be my paw paw when he was a little younger. He was already in his mid 60s before I turned 10. He's still the toughest man I've ever known. Even in his 70s he could flat out out run us, my dad and me, in the hills of Arkansas while running his dogs. I would have loved to have hunted with him when I'd been old enough to have a chance to keep up with him...lol

I have done a lot work for a TV hunting celebrity, on several occasions. He is just a normal guy (a tad snobbish) but he wont talk hunting with you. I think he can sense that I am a better hunter and he feels threatened bolt

I have experienced the same behavior by outfitters with there regular guys. It was pretty bad on a hunt I went on in British Columbia. I can't imagine how bad it would have been if it was a celebrity hunter with a camera crew.

I guided for the West Texas Celebrity Quail hunt for several years and met plenty of them. Some of them were great guys and others were a pain in the posterior! For the most part the less well known they were the better they were to hunt with. A couple of the better ones were Larry Hagman ( really fun guy in person laughed and cut up the whole time) Leroy Jordan and Bob Lilly ( both real gentlemen and super nice guys) John Elliott. ( played for the 69 Jets) was one of my favorites, a really great guy and very down to earth. I won't mention the ones who were on the other end of the spectrum as it serves no purpose.

Re: Celebrity hunters? - 01/17/16 04:29 PM

In Iraq in 2005, I got tagged with escorting and pulling security for Aaron Tippin for about 24 hours during Thanksgiving. I really thought he'd be a snotty kind of guy with the way he prances around in his tight t-shirts and all. But he was the most down to earth guy one could expect. He had a genuine care for the troops and just wanted to say thanks to as many as he could and play guitar for them.

We didn't hunt obviously, but we had some great talks about hunting (he's a big turkey hunter) and his place in Tennessee. He's also a Glock guy like me, and we actually hit it off pretty well. I really appreciated his time coming over during the holidays and I became a fan that day.

A friend of mine went to see Nugent in concert here in San Antonio. He was offended that Ted used such fowl language and he was upset that his kids had to hear it. All I could say was "you took your kids to a rock-n-roll concert! What did you expect?"

So, you're the folks he hunts with up there. He talks fondly of you and your place.

And yes he does use the fbomb profusely (I don't throw stones about that though ;)) . He can and does turn it off when kids are around though.

One of the most awesome teaching moments I've ever seen occurred at my place in uvalde. I try to let him hunt without other hunters around when I can. But as you know his schedule can change a LOT. One time his schedule forced him to overlap with a lot of father/sons. The young boys had no idea who he was but they knew their dad's liked him. Ted was sitting on the couch writing articles and emailing on his laptop and one of the dad's told me the boys wanted to talk to Ted. I asked Ted if he would and he said bring them in. He then went into his empty his pockets and explain why he carries each item (truly amazing what he totes around). And then he tied it all into a little speech on being a man and personal responsibility. Those boys hung on every word. And I can guarantee they'll never forget that talk.

Yes I have seen him do something like this on many occasions. When he is on his better vocabulary behavior he can be a real inspiration to young kids.
Funny story, once he was hunting with another rancher in the area and went with him to his 13 year old daughters basketball game. After the game he signed their jerseys. One little girl ran up to me and said " I got Ted Nugent's autograph". I asked who he was and she said " I don't know but he signed my jersey!".
Still laugh about that.

Re: Celebrity hunters? - 01/17/16 09:56 PM

I have been an outfitter and a guide for a long time, getting close to 4 decades. During the last 20 years I have been around TV film crews for hunting shows about a dozen times while guiding for other outfitters, and to be honest, about 80% of them were complete dorks and prima donnas and couldn't hunt their way out of a paper bag. The amount of complete fabrication that occurs in the shows, once they have been put together and edited is mind boggling. Only one I can remember actually appeared to be a seasoned hunter.

As an outfitter I will not take TV crews and have turned down at least 5 in just the last couple years. Ted is one of the few I would actually consider having as a client, as I have heard nothing but good things about him when he has been in others camps. He pitches in and is one of the boys from what I hear. The language.............. pffft, who cares. My wife and I spent a lot of time in the oil field country up north and heck the F bomb is probably the first word out of a babies mouths up there, not Momma or Dadda. LOL I think my wife could give him a good run for the money on that if she tried hard. wink

We didn't hunt obviously, but we had some great talks about hunting (he's a big turkey hunter) and his place in Tennessee. He's also a Glock guy like me, and we actually hit it off pretty well. I really appreciated his time coming over during the holidays and I became a fan that day.

Love hearing stories like that. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, sir. up

my top 5 would be.....
1. Miranda Lambert
2. Tiffany Lakosky
3. Nichole Reeve
4. Haley Heath
5. Pigman

the first 4 for obvious reasons, Pigman just because I got to meet him a couple of years back and he shot the bull with my buddy and I for over an hour just telling stories.... would be fun to have in camp.

as for the 1st 4... if my wife ever sees this, I will deny that I typed this post..... someone must have hacked into my account and typed it!!! lol

In camp with us in 2010 was John Wilson of Trophy Quest. In person he was ok even though I do not care for the show. His cameraman, August, was the man with the best stories.

Is hunt with Phil Robinson or the dark haired chick that talks funny on the Winchester show. Don't recal her name but she seems legit.

My best buddy hunted Saskatchewan whitetails a few years ago and Michael Waddell was in camp as well. Waddell spent as much time screwing as many Indian chicks as he could as he did deer hunting. He's pretty much a fraud.

I never thought much of Waddell, anyway. Always seemed fake to me.

LOL I think my wife could give him a good run for the money on that if she tried hard. wink

Those are the type stories I hear from outfitters too.

I can't abide Ted and his public persona, but it does give me a new perspective to hear there is another side to him. Still wouldn't want to share a camp with him though.....

Watched an episode of "Bone Collector" a couple of days ago. Nick Mundt shot an antelope with a bow square in the butt (65 yards in a 40 mph wind - never should have taken the shot). They found it the next day after the coyotes had eaten it up.

The worst part was Waddell and T-Bone's studio "cut-in" shots - they were laughing and cracking jokes about the shot ("JUST a bit far back..." in a Bob Uecker voice, etc.).

Pretty much epitomized what is wrong with much of hunting today.

Re: Celebrity hunters? - 01/24/16 01:27 PM

The final straw for me was a show that had him fly in to hunt. His bow had not arrived, yet, so he scrounged up some recurve that he had never shot before. He flung a few arrows and called it good. Some people can pull that off, so I gave it a chance. He was not one of those people, as it turned out. He gut shot a buck that evening. He clearly hit it too far back, and even let it sit overnight, because he knew it. The thing that got me was how he kept saying, over and over, how perfect the shot was. How he had double lunged it and the arrow was in the offside shoulder. If it was such a perfect shot, why did we let it sit all night for the coyotes and weather to ruin, in early season Texas temps, no less? And, more to the point, why is your arrow sticking out of its guts?

I didn't think much of him before that. Now I can't stand to see his face in so much as a magazine ad. I won't spend a dime on anything with that stupid logo on it.
