I know that you deer hunters sit in a blind alone, but how many of you go hunting alone? I hunted quail alone at times over the years but no longer do. How about you?

Since no one I know bird hunts, I'll be hunting alone. I like to duck hunt also and finding a guide that will ask a group to let an outsider in is tough.

going solo means you got no one to blame for any flubs and foopahs, you can do it your way with no criticism.

Bill, I've hunted squirrel alone, but it just wasn't any fun. If I've got to go alone, I'd just as soon stay at home.Ive never been much of a deer hunter. Sitting in a blind ain't my style. I can't explain it, but sitting in a field for dove or on a log for squirrel never bothered me, but sitting in an enclosed box was too darn boring.

I enjoy my alone time in a blind but I like to know someone else is on the lease and knows where I am. When I get my big blind standing I will enjoy sitting in my big blind with a friend. Or a dog.
Add nasty cold wet weather and sitting in a nice warm blind gets even better. And naps, oh yeah. They are real nice.

I sometimes dove hunt alone & it doesn't bother me a bit. I too found sitting in a blind boring, yet another reason i don't deer hunt anymore, with cost being the main reason

I work weekends and my family that I hunt with me does not. I spend most of my time at the lease by myself. It gets a little lonely sometimes and other times it is ok. That is fixing to change on 11-30-2015 since the weekend shift I supervise is being consolidated to weekday and nights and I will have weekends off again. I am sure going to miss those 4 days off every week.

I don't hunt from a blind much. I've walked many a mile and hunted on the ground many days all by myself. As a teen I couldn't sit in one place long. Later I learned to bring a book along. I can stay out for hours if I have a book, water, and some snacks.

I enjoy the group and the talk over breakfast after the hunt, but don't have much opportunity for that anymore.
I considered a lease earlier this year, but one of the restrictions was that I couldn't bring anyone with me. I don't want to be out on one far away from home and alone where no one knows where I'm at.
Trying to find that sweet spot (affordable lease, closer to home, allows someone else) isn't easy. Until then, I'm just sticking to reliable day lease options.

Little opportunity to dove hunt, which was my hunting thing but did about 95% of the night fishing for catfish/white bass/crappie with just my dog(s). Have perty much been a loner since my late teens and just seemed to prefer it that way.

Prefer to actually hunt alone. I think independence breeds a stronger person, knowing you and only you can do it.
Campsite get togethers are a different story, make it a party. Joke telling, BS, men with same ideals, etc. I recall one night Stub, Erathkid, and myself solved all the worlds problems in one night.

I don't have a problem going to the lease by myself but these days sitting in a stand with my grandson is what I enjoy the most. I thank the good lord for every second that we spend together and know that I'm blessed to be able to do so.
Since I've gotten older (pushing 61) my family thinks I'm feeble or something and they don't like for me to go to the lease by myself.

I haven't killed a deer since 95 except to put one down that is injured and in stress. If the wife or one of the grands can't go I don't go. My walking is limited the last few years so I'm confined to a box blind.

I like to deer hunt alone but enjoy hanging out at the end of the day cooking dinner and sitting around a fire. I hate dove hunting alone. Apparently I don't have any friends. I usually deer hunt with my nephews and my wife will go sit with me on dove hunts. She won't shoot but sometimes she'll bird dog for me if it's not too hot.
I'm the same way about fishing. About half the time I enjoy having someone on the boat but other times I wish someone would launch me then meet me back at the ramp at the end of the day.

My lease partner had family in town this weekend, so went duck hunting by myself yesterday for the first time. I was excited for it, except for the drive out there by myself. But, since I'm not seeing any migration and all of the birds are local, I didn't even take a shot, so the blind was a little lonely.
I think I would have enjoyed it had I had some targets. I also enjoy hunting with people.

I don't have a lease this year. Five years ago I got on a place to take my kids hunting (I have a lot of memories of hunting with my dad).
Anyway, my 16 year old joined the wrestling team at his school; the 13 year old decided hunting isn't her thing, and the eight year old has the attention span of a gnat.
So, I hunted a lot of weekends alone last year which I don't like.

I like to hunt alone, but I prefer someone else to be in camp. Spending all day and all night without any human interaction can be a little weird but a day are two of it can be a nice break sometimes. It just isn't something I like to do very often. This season my wife has promised to come hunting with me at least one weekend so I will share a blind with her then and hopefully more in the future if she takes to hunting. I'm just waiting until the mesquitos are gone to bring her, as her hunting future is fragile and I want to give it the best opportunity to be something she enjoys. But, I prefer to actually sit the blind alone.

My favorite day to hunt was Thanksgiving morning. All the other hunters stayed home for the holiday. I would walk from camp to my blind and most times I had a nice buck before 8am.

I absolutely love to be in camp alone for a several day stretch. Not saying I don't enjoy our very family atmosphere camp, but I love having several days of solitude if I can get it. I out roaming and walk a lot as well when I'm the only one in camp. It's so quiet.
I often hunt alone at the weekend

I don't like being at camp alone...the bonding time with others is great. I do prefer to hunt alone; though the times I do hunt with others ain't so bad either. For me there is something about being alone in the woods that makes all the stress melt away.

I've found it to be very hard to find a good hunting partner when you travel anywhere to hunt. Everyone wants to go, but when it's time for the deposit, they all have excuses!!! I've been on a lot of hunting trips by myself. One time I hunted for Mule Deer in a Wilderness area by myself and went six days without seeing another human being!!!! Funny how glad I was to get back to my truck and turn the radio on just to hear another voice.

Hunt by myself most of the time. Don't really prefer it, that is just the way things normally work out. Would rather hunt with family or "good" friends. Sometimes I hunt with other hunters but due to the way they act or hunt, I would rather be by myself. It can be good or bad either way.

You beat me to it.
We host hunters year round. I am always hunting something, guiding, or spending an evening around a fire with a crowd of people.
Every so often we get a weekend with no one around, just the wife and me. I will grab the shotgun to get in a dove hunt, try and flush some quail, sit in a blind, or go look for sheds, and I really don't care if I shoot anything. It is peaceful, just me, God and nature. I have learned to cherish these moments as much as I cherish the time with good people.

I never hunt alone. "Max" (My Labrador Retriever) insists on sitting in the blind with me. Fortunately, my box blind is only 3' off the ground so helping the 100 lb. dog into the box is fairly routine.
I prefer hunting alone at all times - except for when one of my daughters goes with me.
I used to love the fun and fellowship of the deer lease - did it for 30 years. Since I got my own place I find more and more I prefer the times when I am alone.
As for bird hunting, I really enjoy hunting them with just me and Jenny (my dog). One of my favorite things in the world.
I think getting older has something to do with it for me. IDK.
Just replace the word "drink" with "hunt".....

I hunted this past weekend alone, pulled my big bodied buck onto my four wheeler alone, and cleaned him up alone. Remote area with cell signal in my stand only. I don't think it's a great idea hunting alone with nobody within miles of you, but it sure is peaceful.

I do sometimes. I go to Kansas alone, and can go for days without speaking to another human unless I stop by the gas station for some ice or drinks. I will occasionally go to the lease in llano alone too. I enjoy the solitude. But while I was hunting alone last weekend, after I got a doe I passed on another and a management buck because it would be more fun to share those experiences with my son next week.

Have not watched it, but horror or scary movies make me laugh. As kids we used to walk out into a dark open field in Cold Springs, do circles with our eyes closed, and then try to find our way back to the truck. There was a cemetery right next to the field
I've sat in double, triple, and even quad occupancy blinds, so not all deer hunters sit by themselves!

I work shift work so I am off a lot during the week and therefore hunt alone a lot. I started goose hunting a lot alone and that is a great way to hunt. It's a lot of work but the rewards can be worth it. The birds don't get pushed off of roost ponds by hunters like the weekends and hiding only one hunter and not having to yell "take'em" usually results in birds that work really well. Plus on slow days when only a very few birds decoy, I get to shoot all of them.
Sure they were animal bones? Could be the last person that didn't go in and was followed back to camp...only to be drug back.

After my third heart attack this spring, the morning after I got home from the lease, it certainly has given me cause to think about it. In fact I thought about it once last weekend out there by myself, enjoying a quiet camp, time alone to free myself of the work and worry world at home.
I just figure you can't live scared. I'm going to die. There is as good of a place as any. Even if is a fall from a stand and it takes a few hours. Beats the hell out of dying of cancer or aids.

Re: Hunting alone - 11/18/15 10:58 AM
I hunt alone more often than not, deer hunt. I enjoy hunting when others are at the lease just to have someone to talk to during the down time between hunts but I hunt mainly during the week when others can't. I tend to see more and better deer during the week when not so many hunters are out and about. I like going to and sitting in the blind alone...well actually I'm not alone...The Lord is always with me and there's just something about getting to the stand around 5-5:30 in the dark, seeing the glory of His creation all around me, that truly humbles me. The awesomeness and majesty of it all. To get to hear the sounds of the beginning of the day, the movement of so many animals. The shear wonder of it all. I never feel closer to The Lord than I do when I'm sitting in my stand praying, singing...under my breath..., and just pondering on His Word...it's just so much more awesome than words can describe.
One day I hope to have a grandson that I can take hunting with me and I'd love to be able to take my wife, who is my best friend, to the lease with me but unfortunately this lease doesn't allow us to bring anyone with us during hunting season so I go alone and yet not alone.

Re: Hunting alone - 11/18/15 01:33 PM
I usually hunt alone, but lately hasnt happened. If you do hunt by yourself and shoot a deer during the evening and it runs off into the woods, you better know your way around before trampling off into the woods especially after dark. This is where hunting alone sucks.

The Ghost and the Darkness is not a horror movie. It is loosely based upon the hunt by Lt. Colonel John Henry Patterson for the Tsavo man-eaters.
If my boys can't be with me I will hunt alone and not give it a second thought. I like solitude.

It seems I have always had better results when hunting or fishing alone and I take pride in knowing I can do all the things involved after a kill by myself. I did have my doubts last weekend after shooting my large buck and realizing I had to somehow drag that sucker onto my four wheeler for a 2 mile rough ride back to camp.
A few minutes of heavy breathing and one well placed ratchet strap was all it took.

What NP said +1...hunted & explored alone for many years, especially after the various lease groups broke up. Dangerous YES, and can be VERY Dangerous since I do have some hands on experience at doing extrodinarily dumb things sometimes...BUT I have learned to leave a "flight plan" of expected destinations and a return time.
Being alone has never been a problem for me ... travelled regionally & nationally 40+ years for work and almost always was alone...no arguments about politics or the price of tea in China...just as much peace and quiet as I want with no one else to answer to or get in a tallest dog contest with & not held down by someone elses lack of interest or inabilities to keep up.

Deer - 100% alone
Pigs - about 50/50, but I prefer to hunt with one or two good buddies.
Upland birds - always with a group of friends
Dove - prefer with a buddy or ten, but I'll do it alone if I have to.
Ducks - only with a buddy willing to eat the foul things.
Calling Yotes and cats I do alone most of the time
If I'm hunting alone, especially at night, my wife or a good friend knows where I am hunting, when I will check in by, and will set an alarm to remind them of I'm late. ( my favorite deer and hog area has poor to zero cell signal ).

I don't go out my way to hunt alone but it is not uncommon, both birds and deer. Trying to coordinate my schedule with others can be a real circle jerk sometimes, it adds stress to something that is supposed to be enjoyable.

I really don't like hunting our place alone. I'll sit there and second guess myself the entire time about whether or not I picked the right stand. If I know my wife is on another stand watching what all comes out I usually feel better about things...at least I get a scouting report.

When I was young, dumb and very serious about hunting I learned the most about the game I was after by hunting solo. However in those early years I hunted close to home, I did not make solo hunting trips to far away places or for long periods of time. Now I need the time alone to hash out the issues of the day so hunting or fishing solo has taken on a different meaning and purpose.. All of that said the times at our U.P. Michigan deer camp with family and friends are what I cherish most..

I enjoy hunting with others, but I do hunt alone much more often. I think a balance of both is healthy for most people. Traveling by myself I usually do at least one long ten day to three week hunting road trip with the dog every season. I do often meet up with others to hunt with along the way, but mostly alone. It is one of the most stress releasing things I have ever done. I was alone when I contracted my necrotising fasciitis flesh eating disease at the hunting lease 3 years ago. Because of a thunderstorm, a stuck truck, being far from camp, with a puppy in tow, the pain, and poor phone service, it was a difficult ordeal physically getting back to camp, getting a call out, dealing with the pain, and getting to a hospital back in Dallas. I'm a 31 year firefighter/emt and though I did not know what was wrong with me, I had a feeling of impending doom and knew I was in a bad situation. My wife suggested I spend the night and wait out the storm for her to come get me. I refused that idea. When I arrived at the hospital I was already sepsis with 4 kinds of bacteria in my bloodstream, going into septic shock and mentally lost the 4 hours before surgery. I was told later that if it had been three more hours before surgery I would have lost my leg. If I spent the night at camp they said my wife would have found me dead the next day, if found alive and survived I would have immediately lost my leg and over several months had other parts cut off me until I hope died. Being out there alone, if I had been unable to get a phone call out or been on one of my road trips in a remote area as I often am, I would not survived this. Do I still hunt alone? Yes. Do I still do road trips? Yes. But what I have changed is I look at situations I come up on with more of a risk/benefit analogy than I did before. For example where I once climbed down a cliff in Colorado to save an hour hike, I would take the hike now.
