How long are Acorns good when laying on the ground

My property has a lot of oak trees. Millions and I mean millions of acorns have hit the ground since this last rain. Nothing coming to feeder or food plot. How long am I going to have to wait until they start hitting the feeders again? I looked it up on Google and it said they will be good for the deer to eat until Mid-winter....whatever that means.

It is easier to tell you when the acorns are gone, because there are all sorts of factors that effect the viability of the acorns on the ground.

Usually a good bet most are gone or inedible 3 - 5 days after the first or second freeze.
If you get a good rain then the temp goes up some will spoil/rot/mold.
Oaks don't drop all their acorns at once.

Very soon after drop. Worms get in most and eat the seed.

Same problem here, nothing is in my food plot, not even tracks. Acorns are everywhere!!! We're just hoping the next big storm will wash them away!!!!!

I have a bunch of pecan trees, do deer really like pecans or too big/hard?

This is what I have seen, unless you have a ton of them on the ground or still in the trees. I have also seen a big rain ruin them if they stand in water for a while. I have also seen them still green and in the trees in December one year. Was the toughest hunting season I had seen to that point.

When it's like that on our place in East Tx, they're usually gone by the end of Feb. That's because the hogs start showing up at the feeders. Till then, the deer and hogs are still eating on acorns!!!

I have so many on the ground and so many still left in the trees with every tree stacked full it don't matter how good they last..and that's just my 40acres that is 60% oak trees.. there is 10 miles of creek bottom anywere from a 1/4mile to 3 miles wide that im sure are the same exact way.. good for the deer though

Do the deer not eat soured acorns? I see a lot of them eat soured corn with no problem.

I think its the point of the shell... corn that is soured is still edible really and probably easier but iv only seen them eat it when times are tough ... an acorn that has soured will start rotting on the inside and the shell makes the process worse faster.. Im sure they can tell which ones are good though..

Ours are starting to sprout. Going to be a lot of new young Oaks coming up.
