Thoughts on Plots.

We disced and threw about 1-1/2 acres of seed and fertilizer. Winter peas, wheat, clover and one other (can't remember) on Sept 27th. There hasn't been a single rain or even heavy dew since. If the seed hasn't been pilfered, I assume it will still sprout, but should we buy more seend and spread again?

There is a very good chance of rain in the middle of this week so I need to get moving now.

That seed should be fine sitting there, same as seed that rest all winter waiting for Spring. You just want a couple of weeks of decent temps for them to sprout good and gets some root down, clover will come on better next Spring anyway.

I planted 2 weeks ago now and my seed is still not up either. I planted last year in mid Sept and part came up over the next week. The rest did not come up till the last part of October when it rained. All oats and winter peas both years.

I am in the same boat, planted same exact date. Waiting on first rain since. Looking good for late this next week. In years past have waited a couple weeks before rain but never this long. Seed came up fine when waiting a couple weeks, what's a couple extra? Should be fine, esp if you lightly disced the seed in the dirt to cover. Weeds have a little extra pillow of cover too since they were thick before plowing.

Once the plot comes up the deer will be hammering it, since last visit the natural veg has almost all turned brown and burned out. It was quite green last visit a couple weeks ago.

I did have some germination, posted a few photos in the thread I made this year on my plot. Checked today and those shady areas have been grazed to a nub, but tons of seed still in and on the ground. We just need a weeks worth of some kind of moisture and it will look like a "chia pet"!!

Exact same boat. Same schedule. Hogs have jacked up one plot eating the seed. Need some rain.

I was worried I missed the window to get seed out for this year. Heck I may put some out next week since we havn't had any rain since July either. I'm kind of glad I didn't since the hogs will probably rob me. I'm going to try a hot wire around the plot to hopefully curtail that.

I am with all of you, need rain really bad. Will be over seeding my whole place with rye grass just to keep it from washing away if we get lots of rain this winter. Most of grass has died due to the drought. Will mix is some grains on about 2 acres.

Same as most of yall. Hogs ransacked my plot within a couple days. I never disked it under. Wheat,peas,and turnips. Cant see any wheat laying. Im gonna reseed with wheat as I have leftover, but would yall re-
fertilize as i have plenty left as well. Dont want to over fertilize and mess things up... Thanks.

Same here, we put ours out Labor day weekend. I wouldn't redo it, you should be fine once it rains.

It is hard to over fertilize, but easy to waste the extra. Phosphorus and Potassium take a while to break down and get into the soil, nitrogen can dissipate pretty quick, especially if it was a liquid. Did you get a soil sample? without that, you really don't know if you're wasting it, or actually adding what you really need. Without a soil sample, it is usually recommended to add 2-300#'s an acre of a general purpose fertilizer like 13-13-13, or 15-15-15

Worse case, you can wait until you get good germination, then top dress that with a good nitrogen like 24-0-0- or similar. BTW, You need to get the seed some what under the surface.

I'm sure many are in the same boat. And I'm one of them.

I did first plot this year. Got lucky planted September 7th or so few days before a decent rain. Did Tecomate Max-Attract which is supposed to be OK minimal water Peas, Clovers, Chicory, and Cereal Grains. However, I think my key this year was had neighbor go over with the wheat drill. My wheat is looking great although it has been dry for a month and not much of the other stuff has come up. That might have to be my game plan going forward is always do wheat drill on top so even in drought you have something.

What are the cons of re-seeding? Can you put out too much? Obviously you can, but how the hell do I know how much is too much?

I think the biggest "con", would be if the ground can support all the extra growth, if you fertilized well, it should be ok. I always over seed when I plant since I get some loss to broadcasting. Last year it all came up and did great, up too 4'!, but I also fertilize mine.

Another con would be the seed in the ground that is set, waiting on rain, you will still get a lot of it to germinate though, just added work and expense.

Rob, of the seed you mentioned (not knowing what the "cereal grains" are specifically), most of those seeds are hard shelled compared to wheat and oats, so they need moisture longer than the wheat. I have had oats and wheat sprout in as little as 5 days during wet weather.

Also, an inoculate for those seed helps the shell and plant open and grow, most premixed does not supply that, but you can buy it separately. Scarified seed will also open quicker.

I'm in learning process. When I get my own tractor will hire some consultants and hopefully shrink the decades of learning experience needed. Just happy first year I have wheat looking healthy even with the lack of rain! I have a feeder next to plot and have been hunting it a bunch, every sit I have been getting deer at feeder and plot same time. I really hope it comes on strong late season!

Half an acre. 1/2 oats, 1/4 peas, 1/4 turnips, followed by 16-20-0, followed by the harrow.

And rain's a comin!

funny, I was never a farmer, but planting plots start watching the weather and get excited about rain like farmers.

at least we don't have the flip side problems with harvesting when too muddy wishing for sun.

Deer are already hitting mine.

They are hitting mine also, just nothing growing yet for them to eat.

WORD! What I had come up has been eating to the ground.. Since my land has a strong grade and they are calling for up to 4+" over 48 hrs, my seed may end up on STX's place

Whoaa - here it comes . . .

We lucked out a couple of weeks ago and got about an inch and a half of rain and the oats came up pretty good.

Forecast says over six inches through Saturday. I'm already thinking about sunshine I don't know how farmers do it year in, year out...

I have mine planted for 3 weeks with no rain, so hope I get what I need to have it come up.
