Pop up blinds?

Pop up blinds? - 09/22/15 01:13 PM

I'm noticing a lot of folks on here use pop up blinds for deer season. I personally have only used one for turkey season. How long before your hunt do you put out a pop up blind for white tail?

I prefer to have it out a good month before the season. But I have moved them during the season with success also.

I know deer are very observant to new things therefore that's why I ask.

a month or so...try to brush them in or place near/in brush...

I've had both deer and coyotes come so close I could touch them...

Do the pop ups you use have a floor in them. I was thinking about getting one and I wonder about those that do not and getting in them in the morning and finding a snake, etc.

In my experience the ones with floors are noisy. If your setting up and leaving it in one spot all season, get a scrap piece of carpet cut to be 6-10" longer and 6-10" wider than your blind. Pull the flaps of the carpet inside the blind so they lean against the walls and duct tape inside and out up

And I put mine out a month before the season

I have put one up and killed a deer out of it hours later. I have grunted a buck to about 5 feet with one put up not an hour before. Not sure it really matters sometimes unless you stick it right on their trail. Mine has a floor which and good and bad. To good is no snakes, the bad is you can take a nap and wake up with a deer poking his head inside. True story.

Year before last a guy on our place set one up that morning about an hour before sunup, at about 8:30 he was cleaning an 8 point.

I think it kind of depends on where you are putting it up. We have a few fields where nothing ever changes other than an occasional tree falling and I have found that if I put a pop up there it will take some time for the deer to get accustom to it. On the other hand I have one large field that we use for bailing hey and there are always tractors, trucks, trailers, bails etc in the field, often over night. We have deer in this field just about every evening before sundown and they could care less about the changes. Three years ago I put a pop up in that field over night and the next morning tagged a doe who walked out under 50 yards from the blind and did not even pay attention to it.

I guess like us a deer's behavior will vary. Some will be weary and others will not seem to mind, the ones who do not mind get eaten... smile

We try to have them up at least a few weeks before, including any tree trimming, etc. A month is nice.
Deer can get accustomed to something new really quick.
We stacked two rocks as a 200 yard marker once. The deer saw the rocks split. Five minutes later they walk out and look at the rocks again and discovered that they were not a threat and started eating corn. I have seen this happen when we trimmed branches out of the way, moved a feeder, or setting a popup blind, only minutes later to see the deer return.

This past year I bought camo burlap and began driving my four wheeler to where I wanted to hunt and wrapping it in the burlap and hunting from behind it. Saw deer everytime, even had some as close as 25 yards away. BTW, I set up my "blind" 30 minutes before I wanted to hunt.

I normally put mine out a month before but sometimes move one and hut it the same day if you have a lot of cover and assuming it has already been seasoned by storing it outside.

Do y'all shoot through the mesh window or open it the day you hunt?

I open them up but I spray paint the windows black so it looks the same for the most part. I also wear a black hoodie or similar and sit back from the window.

It depends. I will usually set mine up a few days before if I can. I have had success both ways. You dont really need a floor just clear out anything that is going to make noise like leafs etc. You can shoot through the mesh but I usually will open a window. I can see better and I dont worry about my shot as much. sit back in the blind and you will be golden.

The best luck I've had with mine, set it up, killed deer same or next day with no brushing in. I just back it up to some thick stuff. I want the deer to see it. When I brushed it in, the deer wouldn't get close to it. When I just stuck it out there, they would come in close just to check it out.

I do not shoot through the mesh.

I loaned one of mine to a friend for a January bow hunt. It came back with a 6 inch hole in the screen. He said the deer would not come in and he shot it with his rifle with a muzzle break through the mesh. Good news you can get new screens. lol

Put it up at least 2 weeks early and brush it in good. I have had issues with rats chewing them up if I put the blind out to early. I wear dark colors or dark camo and do not use the mesh. Also leave the back window closed and side windows almost closed.

I read a great story if a guy hinting a trophy buck in Iowa. Deer was 6.5 years old and he had him patterned in a food plot. He put up a pop up and it took 11 days for that particular buck to go back to tge field. I think 30 days is a good move.
