Coyote v deer

Out ran the bull and made it to my stand. Out pops a young buck meandering across my plot. I watch it and enjoy the good fortune. A couple minutes later here come two coyotes, nose to the ground, taking the exact path as the young buck. Lights out on the leader. No shot on the follower. This is the 2nd time in 3 sits were this has happened. I've seen it 3 or 4 time in recent years past.

Do I have a problem on my hands beyond nature taking its normal course?

Not uncommon to see during this time of year when velvet is falling off. But being in the right spot at right time is lucky.

Like hogs, I shoot every yote I can. I really don't think you can kill enough of them. But to answer your question, your observations do not necessarily indicate a higher than normal yote population (although it can be). Maybe you're just lucky enough to actually see more this year.

I didn't think of that. Last week coyotes were trailing two young bucks. One with velvet and one with tattered velvet. I guess the give off or leave a blood scent.

Could be young hungry yotes, or just following a common trail. Sounds like you're close to where they like to spend the day though.

Was doing some dozing next to a neighbors this morning. Kept seeing buzzards circling pretty low. Coyotes had gotten a WT fawn last night. Anyone that lets a coyote walk will be sorry in the long run.

I always try to shoot the trailing (last) coyote first. Quite often the one that was leading will run off a ways and then stop and look back to see what happened. I discovered this by accident, but it seems to work more often than not.

Pigs we shoot the mama sow first, then blast away at the little ones as they come back around.
As previously noted, shoot everyone you see.

On the game cams this summer I saw fawns walk past then 30 minutes later 2-3 yotes nose down following it. Pizzed me right off.

I've observed the same on both counts. I never let either coyote or hog walk, even if I was out there to hunt deer. The suppressor really helps in letting the hunt continue after a shot, or shots are made.

Yotes never get a pass... ever

I know my yotes were bold last year and they spent a considerable amount of time hanging around the feeders. Interestingly enough, the deer were quite bolt too and were ready to squabble about it.

This time of year is when I usually snare the most. I think its mostly the older pups that I'm catching. They come through with a large female. It makes me think its older pups or a group thats learning to hunt together with that large female. It usually doesn't stop until I get that female taken out and start leaving carcasses in holes they dug.

I once caught a coyote in a snare and took it out left it beside the hole and put in a new snare and caught another coyote the next night. Everybody always said to move the carcass but sometimes it may help to leave it there.

It will be ok, they can co-exist just fine. Have they not since the beginning of time? Your local area day hunters kill more than any yotes!

You must not have many if you think that way.

I understand what your saying here regarding co-existing since the beginning, however I'm inquiring if others could share their experience with the balance. Specifically, is what I'm observing on my little slice of heaven appear about average or out of balance? If it were to appear out of balance I'd make a greater effort to fix it. Currently I am only an opportunistic 'balancer'.

Our does with fawns will run a single coyote off. Rarely see 2 together unless it's a litter of pups. But our rabbit population is out of this world so I'd imagine that takes pressure off the fawns.

I have actually run into to more yote's this year than I have in the past 10 or so. I tagged 4 about three weeks ago over the course of the weekend. I saw more than that but they were either too far away or too close to a tree line and dove into creek beds to didi mao out of the area. So far these past three months I have shot about 9 and have seen many more than that. Most have been pretty young though.

On one of my game camera's in particular I have seen deer and then just a few minutes later have seen coyote's trotting by with their noses to the ground heading in the same direction the deer went. And I agree, not a single one walks if I can help it....

Don't be scared to shoot a yote during a deer hunt. Ive killed plenty of animals right after gunshots or shortly thereafter. Even doe and buck once. doe laying right there during rut he was still after her and I mean after her. No supressor either.

With more urbanization and more people there are more coyotes than ever before. They thrive in our sprawling urban landscape and have come much more accustom to people, cars, lights, houses, etc.
