High Fence or Low fence? - 07/17/15 11:49 PM

Gotcha! What's up everyone? It's been a long while since I've been on here. 46 days and a wake up till sep. 1st.
Has anyone gotten into any urasions? I'm in bastrop tx for work and the ring necks are everywhere! Good luck to all!

What exactly are you referring to when you say, "urasions"?

Are you looking for a type of sheep?

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/18/15 02:05 PM

I think he may mean of the "dove" persuasion?

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/18/15 02:47 PM

I guess so. I asked because of the title. I guess he's just trolling.

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/18/15 03:15 PM

I, too, am confused about the "urasian" thing. What's weird is when I googled that term, I got a lot of hits for "Eurasian" but also one for mourning dove.

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/18/15 03:25 PM

He's talking about eurasian and collared doves that are open season year round.

Smaller and a little different coloration than mourning doves. He's counting down the days to the dove opener.

It should be a banner dove season if the weather cooperates and you have a thrasher for the sunflowers. cheers elmer

Wow, first I've heard of these! It's fascinating how they've spread around the world since 1800. See the subsection "Distribution":

Are they larger or smaller than mourning doves?

Ones we shoot look the size of pigeons. Makes it easy to pick them out to prolong hunts.

(Ones at home are the same way that hang out around the hay rings)

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/18/15 04:30 PM

Yeah, they're pretty close to the size of a pigeon.

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/18/15 04:33 PM

It's great having a hunt where you've got 20 birds in the bag before the white wings start flying in the evenings. I hate having to leave wings on those stupid things.

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/18/15 05:10 PM

Lol sorry it took so long. Yea I just mispelled Eurasian my bad. And I put the title as a joke because it seems like there's a high fence low fence thread about once a month. I should of been more detailed lol. And collared doves are bigger than white wings. Like small pigeons. There's a lot in a field about 20 miles from where I live

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/18/15 05:24 PM

European Turtle Doves which are a bit smaller than a Mourning Dove have been introduced to North America. I don't know about Texas but I've seen them in Forida.

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/18/15 05:41 PM

We pile them up come dove season. Could hunt them all year but it's just easier to get into big numbers during the fall over cut grain fields. We'll shoot until we either run out of shells, wear out the dog, or run out of beer. Fun killing that many pain in the butt to clean all of them. They're pretty big, larger than white wings but smaller than most pigeons.

The ones I posted and the only ones I know of are Eurasian Collard Dove and you can see in the top pic all collards on top, a pigeon, then a row of white wing, then bottom row are mourning dove. They aren't as big as the pigeon, but are larger than the white wing, and almost twice the size of the mourning.

Here are some links

http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Mourning_Dove/lifehistory
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/White-winged_Dove/lifehistory
They overlap with Eurasians peaking out heavier but it seems mourning doves have longer wing spans. The section on Eurasians and White wings say that the Eurasian is biggest, then white wings, then mourning doves.

Inca... or hear a lot of folks call them Aztec or Mexican doves. Fast little devils that like to hang out around bird feeders.

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/20/15 05:31 PM

This is from the Kansas Dept of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism.
The Eurasian collared-dove is a native of Europe and Asia. It was accidentally introduced to the Bahamas in the early 1970s when some birds in a pet store were released. By 1996, collared doves had reached Kansas. Collared doves are very similar in appearance to ringed turtle-doves and these two species apparently interbreed. Ringed turtle-doves, however, are more dependent on humans than collared doves. Because these two species are so similar in appearance, most people assume that all light-colored doves with a partial black ring across the back of the neck are Eurasian collared-doves. Thus, there is little distribution information for ringed turtle-doves and the hybrids of these species. In Kansas, collared doves have been reported throughout Kansas in all but eight counties. However, hunters are not likely to shoot one because they tend to stay close to towns, where shooting is not permitted.

Re: High Fence or Low fence? - 07/20/15 10:55 PM

If your shooting collared doves and they're the same size or smaller, than mourning dove, you're probably shooting ringed turtle doves. If they are as big or bigger than whitenings they're Eurasians. Because the species do cross they can be anywhere in between, just look at the pictures I posted, see if you can tell the difference.
