Fence around feeder

I am thinking of putting up some cattle panels to make a fence around a feeder to keep hogs out... about 30' x 30' square or so.... what is the lowest height that would keep a hog out of the pen? Thanks

Iv had bigger pigs roll over standard size hog panel.... They can jump higher than you think also

as Nav stated, standard hog panels (32-34") will keep the majority out but some can jump. You can use cattle panels (50"x16' or 20'? $19 at Tractor Supply) to make the pen. I usually will take bolt cutters and cut out a notch where deer can jump in or cut one approximately in half length wise to have 2 lower panels (but you run the risk of hogs jumping in).

You'll need one t-post in the middle of the panel. Other wise the panels are too flexible and pigs run up and over. Had them bust in one side and out the other. Peckerwoods couldn't use the same access...

Never had hogs jump in, shoot at them in the fence and they can jump clear 5 ft high fence. Make a round area not square, use the 34" high panels, if you have cattle sometimes you might need extra t post in the mid span (instead mid way divide in thirds)

Really depends on the hogs but I have seen 28" keep out hogs and I use 34" hog panels. I hate hogs so I never want them to get a chance at any corn on my place.

All of the above heights are Kosher, unfortunately all my panels have been raised to 7 foot to keep out Pasture Maggots (Goats)

We do not knock on wood have Piggy problems, I always cut a few sections lower to allow the Does and Little slick heads easier Hop ins.. What ever you build go twice what size you want

I use hog panels 34". I frame them with sq tubing. I use 11 of them. I do put gates in the pin to let smaller deer in. If a pig comes in shoot him as soon as he enters and they wont come around. You let them eat or get comfortable they will come back. I killed 16 last year and only 1 this year. No pictures either.

We have five 25" tall pens in lavaca county, where we are ate up with hogs. I get a few a year come into the pen. I keep game cameras running year around also. We buy the economy 16' long 50" tall hog panels from our local store and split them to make two. We also use rebar cut into four foot pieces instead of t post to save money. Of course it will not keep cows out. I use 7-8 panels which gives you 14-16 pieces.

I have lots of pine trees, so I took down six of them and stacked them two high on three sides. Height varies from 2 ft to mayby 3 ft. Then I put a four foot fence up on the front side that I can see through from my deer blind. The height of the logs is such that I can easily step over them to fill the feeder and get the chip out of my game camera, but taller then the hogs will climb over to get to the corn. To keep the logs in place, I rested them on existing trees, and then screwed some PT 2x6's into the ends and onto the sides in a few places. Maybe overkill, but it was scrap lumber and I used every piece I brought with me.

I went from going weeks without seeing any deer on my two game cameras, to now getting pics of four bucks and five does every night. One of the bucks will be a shooter next year if I can keep the hogs away.

No cows on our new lease but a new guy says we must have a pen. I said no we don't but he has been reading a lot and seems to think you just gotta have one. And as hogs go few and far between. what do you boys think.

We have cows is the only reason I have one. No need unless you want to keep hogs out.

For cows can't you use 3 - 4 strands of barb wire? That is what we do.

So the answer is 28" will keep the hogs out.

If you run 28" all the way around you will have more pigs jumping the fence. If you run 34" and cut 1 or 2 small areas down to 28" for fawn entry you will have less adult pigs jumping in, more fawns jumping in. Also, I have learned that bigger is better when it comes to feeder pens so recommend going bigger. They used 6 panels in this video, I would recommend 10-12.
I am familiar with that ranch, I hunted/guided on it for 2 yrs. Loved that place, made some good memories there.

Just get hog panels from TS and be done with it. 34 inches tall is plenty and do them in a circle so 8 to be around 30x30. Bigger is better. We have 7, 8, 9, and 11 around 4 feeders. Early season bigger works better but later on it doesn't seem to matter. I like to fence some feeders and leave others unfenced to concentrate hogs. Then nail them and they will leave until next year.

I've had the 16' cattle panel cut in half length wise which provides for 96" circle. Will have 3 of the cut panels with "larger" openings at bottom of fence. Small pigs can get to corn thru those. However, the critters seem to grow quickly and that solves the problem. Put bobwire up about 15 inches above the cut cow panel. Never had picture or seen full grown hog in feeder pen. As mentioned above need a t-post in middle of each panel. Had salt block in one of the fenced feeder and LO cows mangled one panel to get to salt. No salt in feeders where cattle roam.

I think it depends, if you have cattle, definitely look at going up minimum 34"-36". Otherwise, I'd try 30" or so and see if that keeps out the hogs. I've always been a proponent that you are best to make the feeder pens as low as possible to fully keep out the hogs and at the same time, allowing easier access for the deer to hop in.

Here is a feed pen I built out cattle panels I split in half. So that is 27" more less tall. You decide if it was tall enough. Not sure if they went over, under or thru the panels but after these pics I took those panels down and built the pen out of 34" hog panels. No problems since then.

We only have them if it gets wet STX...but I will see if I can find it but a Buddy that hunts with us has one on camera that would CLIMB the fence and then CLIMB back out...no Rooting but CLIMB

That whole group is dead now....except for one old very smart big old boar...his days are numbered. He shows up at random from time to time, these pics at the house with no feed pen.

I have economy cattle panels cut in half. My pen is 10 panels in circumference. I've had it for over a year and no hogs have come in. I have had Javalina come in. I will be doing this to other feeders also. Right now it is only on one feeder.
