AR500 Steel For Target Shooting?

AR500 Steel For Target Shooting? - 12/03/14 03:21 AM

I have never used anything but paper for target shooting but was thinking of getting steel and know nothing about it. Is AR500 what I need? 300 Win Mag is the biggest I have. Does it come in various thicknesses and, if so, how thick is appropriate for 100 - 1000 yards. Where do I get a piece around Plano?

Thanks - Mickey

Looks like .5" thick will do the trick. At least a couple places to purchase locally.

I bought some on Amazon for $20 a piece. They are 8" round plates. Their 3/8, I don't remember what they are rated for but so far 9mm does nothing to them. Google the widths it will tell you what they are rated for. I'm trying some 223 fmj on it next

After additional research it seems 3/8" is fine as well, as you suggested. And, like you, I will get the 8" round.

Thanks for the response.

If your wanting mainly for pistol I would get bigger diameter plates but if mainly fir rifle your good.

Also, you will want to cant the targets either down or to the side, especially for the 100 yard shots. This serves a couple of purposes. First, it eliminates any real potential ricochet or backsplatter toward the shooter. Second, it both deflects part of the impact of the incoming round and provides a thicker point of impact (diagonal to the face instead of perpendicular), both of which will help the target last longer.

I have 4 AR500 plates on my pistol range. All are 3/8" thick. Sizes 10", 8", 6" and 4". I enjoy shooting from one side to the other and back. More fun than paper and I don't have to replace them. I purchased all mine on Amazon.

.223 will damage it, won't be much but you will definitely see dents in it that will eventually get worse.

Mickey I'm in McKinney and still have a little bit of a 4x8 of 3/8" I bought a while back. Shoot me a PM if you can't find any local

So should I get 1/2" for rifle calibers

It seems that depends on the caliber, distance, and to some degree bullet type.

In my case 223 Rem will be used a little but the main rifle to be used on this target, as stated in my original post, is a 300 Win Mag. Distance will vary from 100 - 1000, again as stated in my original post. Most commonly I will probably use it at 500 or so yards.
