how do other states work with hunting your own property?

how do other states work with hunting your own property? - 10/02/14 10:21 PM

do other states require license for hunting on your own land?

I just got a little worked up today I guess. I have my own property and I'm paying for, my gas money to drive there, hundreds of feet of poly pipe and water troughs for wildlife, corn and protein I bought and I genuinely care about the wildlife on my place. I want the deer and turkey to flourish. I love watching them grow up and I respectfully take only what I need and will eat each year.

when I pay for car tags they use the money for roads I drive on. Same thing for gasoline tax.
we just get taxed to death all of the time. or at least if you work for a living you do.
Fees, permits, taxes so it just irks me sometimes and I got to thinking about how other states handle hunting on your own land if it's any different in other states.

I'll get over it..heck, I'm already over it just venting a little I guess. so ...mild rant over

Ever need a game warden? Want the state to research and make best decisions on limits etc for your neighbors.

In Mississippi long as land is in your name you don't need a license. If it's leased land or public you got to have a license.

Owning land doesn't keep you from taking more than your fair share, nor does it make you exempt from paying your fair share to the state to manage wildlife.

I know how you feel. It pissed me off to have to buy a license to hunt my own place. Then I came to understand although the land was mine, the wildlife belonged to the state. The license fee pays in part for the state to manage the game. The game and wildlife do not belong to the landowner, they belong to the state.

And I'm glad it is that way.

I get that I just have always tried to figure out just who the "state" really is.
Is it the elected officials in Austin, the game wardens, DPS, or everyone who gets a paycheck from a state agency?

I think on reservations game are treated differently but I'm not sure. I know laws are different everywhere it seems. But I don't have that luxury and I must pay my tax to hunt just like I pay sales tax and income tax.
that's just how it is. up

You don't have to have a license on the Reservations in New Mexico, but you have to buy a hunting permit from the Tribe.

All I know is Wyoming and Texas and the the TX prices or should I say "taxes" are a lot better. In Texas I get the Super Combo which is like $80 or something like that right? Wyoming on the other hand.... Antelope=$215, Mulie=$250, Black Bear=$400, and Elk=$550 those are the out of state land owner prices.

Texas Parks and Wildlife is the managing agency that manages the fish and game in Texas

In Kansas, you don't need a license to hunt or fish on your own property except big game tags (need migratory duck stamps too). You must buy a deer tag and they have lowered rates for out of state land owners vs regular non residents. They do have an awesome deal for linear relatives of landowners. I get my tag at the same price as resident and it is good for whitetail or Mulie....I don't have to put in for any lottery! Good for all seasons too! Don't have to pay for each season.

In Missouri, resident landowners get free deer tags based on acreage and can be added to based on game warden review. No free tags for out of state land owners.

We use to get free deer tags in Kansas based on acreage, but now you have to have the game warden review your crop damage and he can issue you free tags.

Sounds like your hunting license fee is a pretty inconsequential expense.

You, and most other people (like me), don't go to that sort of trouble and expense NOT to hunt, right?

In West Virginia, land owners who hunt on their own land do not need a license. I believe your adult children are also able to hunt with land owner privileges.

Last time I bought a hunt/fish in WV, it was 37$. Also, a lot of the Eastern states allow non Residents enrolled in school to buy resident tags.

Also, farmers are allowed to apply for crop damage permits. You can 25 deer I believe with one of those, and you use to be able to hunt from a truck and spotlight with a crop damage permit.

A hunting license, a drivers license and CHL are the three requirements I don't have an issue with. They all involve the use of a potentially deadly weapon. Maybe I don't need a hunters safety course, but unless it can be shot with an Iphone some of the youth out there needs the training. Hunting license fees serve a valuable purpose for game management and law enforcement cost to enforce conservation laws.

Read about the Game Warden shot at Cooper WMA in 2012 I believe, its not just checking tags at processor. He was on his own time hunting, and stopped to investigate spot lighting.

What we, as hunters, should be getting fired up about, is the fact that our Fees (license, shells, etc) are being diverted by the Texas state legislature for other purposes. If the monies we pay for licenses, parks, and many other things were used in an appropriate manner, we wouldn't be talking about the Game Wardens $350 a month gas budget. While our state government gives our tax dollars away to bogus causes without an auditing process.

If you are depredation hunting (have no intention of taking meat and killing for population control), you do not need a hunting license to be on your person to kill pigs.

Then why is high fencing legal?

An out of state tag in TX isn't cheap either.

And you are discounting the lease fees or owning the land costs in TX. Sure, you get your deer tags with your license - but what good are tags if you don't have a place to use them?

I have an issue with a CHL, but only marginally. Outside of that, buying a license and stamps is something I'm going to do whether I hunt that year or not. TPWD is funded heavily through license sales, and it is something I can get behind.

In VA a landowner and his family or a tenant living on the land do not need a license...they just need to follow all the game laws.

If the game belongs to the state then why doesn't the state pay for the damages on your truck when you hit one. Yea it's the states resource until it damages something then it's not theirs smh pos agency

The way I understand it, the deer belong to the people. The state manages the herd.
