First kill with a can. 300 yards and he never heard where the bullet came from. Kill em all, I say! Next on the list is a pair of coyotes, I hope.

I'm sold on suppessors, after firing suppressed weapons I dont care to go back to the non-suppressed stuff.

Is that a 338 Lapua?

Good looking Rifle. Congratulations on the hog, it is a great start, good luck on the coyotes, with a set up like that I would find a water hole and setup 200-300 yards down wind of the water and sit on it during a hot day. You should see hogs, yotes, cats and other varmints come in with day light...

Subsonics at 300y? Can't be right?

I am looking at them to save my hearing. With a suppressor that brings your average centerfire down to around 130 - 135 dBs. Add earmuffs and earplugs and that's another 20 to 30 off. It's a lot safer over the long run. I have hearing damage already, it seems like it's worth the money.

I know what you mean. I really enjoy shooting with it and now I want another one. But I bought one that would run on all my rifles so I wouldn't have to buy another one.

Being left handed means I'm in my right mind.

That's a .260 built with a Savage 10 action.

I never said anything about subsonics. I was running 140 A-maxes at 2800 fps. Dialed 1.0 Mil for 300 yards and hit a neck shot. Next time I'm gonna put it in his or her ear hole.

Tiger Shark. I'm close to being done with my 7 Rem Mag so I bought enough of a suppessor to run on it and everything smaller that I have. Because it is larger than a short action can and has more baffles it really makes a short action cartridge very, very quiet. I shot about 110 rounds out of the rifle this weekend with out any hearing protection what so ever. No hearing problems afterward. They are one of the coolest things since sliced bread. I'm anxious to find out how quiet it makes my .22-250 and .223 AR. Prolly bout like a violent sneeze.

JM and a number of guys at Bandera have and shoot suppessors..they seem to reduce recoil as well or better than most muzzlebreaks and with full house loads can be shot w/out any
ear protection..They would really help those who are recoil/noise
sensitive...even though most of them suffer from lack of trigger time..DD

My 14 year old stepson rang the steel that same day at 700 yards with that rifle. He was driving the rifle like I taught him and he could spot his own misses and hits. He mentioned that the rifle doesn't recoil as much with the suppressor as it does with the brake. No dust flying everywhere and no boom in his ear. The only negative to using a suppressor is the length it adds to the rifle. Just watch what you're doing and it is well worth the little extra effort.

So, the bigger the suppressor, the more sound it quashes? Just how much can it take off a regular load? What kind of range can you expect with a subsonic round, say a .308?

Re: Don't hate the suppressors! They've got their uses. - 02/27/13 01:59 AM

Yes the suppressor I have is designed to be used on a magnum chambering, so using it on a short action makes the report of the short action very, very quiet.

Range of a subsonic .308? That I can't answer, but Chad can. He has rang the steel at 500 yards with a .300 Blackout. So I would think the .308 would hit with some authority at that distance, but you're talking about some serious dialing of elevation on a turret, due to the trajectory of the slow projectile.

Thanks for the info, FJG. I'm trying to get info for my needs. I have a nice .308 varmint rig that I am interested in suppressing, but I need it to be pretty quiet yet still have 150-200yds of range for my coyote job due to neighbor proximity.

In that case I would save about $400 on the magnum suppressor and buy one for short action unless you own a magnum and will suppress it too. I don't have hard numbers on decibels but I can tell you that a center fire short action suppressed sounds about as loud as my .22lr rifles unsuppressed.

If you have 100 yards, or more, standoff from neighbors and your game they won't hear much.

Re: Don't hate the suppressors! They've got their uses. - 02/27/13 04:41 PM

Here is the deal w/ subs and distance you can pretty much think of it like shooting a .45 with respect to velocity and energy.

Bank on 1-1.5 moa. w/ a 308, its basicly 4 mils difference from full pressure to subs at 100yrds. about 9 mils at 200. that is the amout of elevation correction I need for a 950yrd shot with my 175smk rounds.

most rifel projectile will not expand or only verry little at 100 and even less at 200 so they may hit hard with good energy but dont count on a massive wound channel.

I've only shot a suppressed rifle once, a Rem 700 in .308 that belonged to a fellow gun club member. I loved it! Full power rounds just made a little "crack". Recoil seemed very reduced too. My next rifle will have a suppressor.

$50 will get all your muzzles threaded. One suppressor that can run on every rifle is greatness. They are addicting!

The majority of the work is what ever you do for a living. Save the money and dive in. The documents can be completed and mailed off before lunch. Wait six months and its over. If you do it now you'll have it well before fall arrives.
