What Ammo to shoot?

What Ammo to shoot? - 09/09/11 01:34 PM

I was hoping someone with knowledge of T/C Encores could provide a little info. I'm going on an Elk hunt in Oct and wanted to take two guns.
First is the trusty Win model 70 in 30-06. I hunt with this gun every year and feel very confident out to 300 yds, but I'm practicing a further distances. This one I feel should be an acceptable choice with 165-180 grain bullet.
Second and the one I'm swaying back and forth on is my T/C in 300 win mag. I have not shot this rifle a lot, never hunted with it. When I had shot it I found it not to be as accurate as my Winchester. Question is what bullets and weight would you recommend.
I've tried winchester accubond and Hornadys, although not sure of bullet style and weight I had previously tried.

every T/C encore i've shot or been around has been very accurate.

for elk, I would use a good bullet, hornady always produces good accuracy for me, hornady interbond and the new GMX's would be a good start, i would shoot a 180 grain in the .300 mag.

I would also probably hedge my bets a little bit and shoot the .300 instead of the .30-06, just to be on the safe side

I had heard that the factory barrels were not as accurate as some of the aftermarket ones. I guess not true in your opinion?

I shoot a 300 win mag and use a 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. 3 elk and none ever took a step..one was 50 yards, another was 175 yards and the last one was 405 yards. So it had good knock down all the way out. Mine are hand loads in the 300 but in my other guns I've had good luck with Federal Premium. I was shoothing the 300 this morning with my hand loads and when I got it dialed in I shot 2 rounds of the Nosler Accubonds in 180 grain (just to see how they compared to my 180 grain handloads) and they were 1 inch lower at 200 yards.

Experiment and see what it shoots well. It makes no sense to me but my remmy 700p shoots winchester ammo better than remington or hornady just have to find what she likes.

I always shoot different varieties and brands to find the best. Just didn't find the right one I guess. Bought some Win Accubond 180 gr, Hornady BTSP Interlock 150, Hornady 165 gr SST Interlock, Federal 165gr Nosler Part. I'm hoping the Accubond or 165 sst shoot well. Already know the 150 gr will be too light for elk, but may use on deer.

Hey John..thanks for the referral on the elk hunt. Really looking forward to it! I may run out and pickup some of the Ballistic tips 180's today. Going to the lease and shoot some longer distances, 300-400 yds.

Have fun on your Elk hunt and be sure and report back when you return. Sure wish I was going with you. I'll be putting in next year for sure..

I have owned 2 of the pro hunters and neither would shoot anywhere close to my bolt guns. I have heard several that shoot really well but neither of mine, nor the ones a couple of my buddies own/owned are near as accurate as my 700's or wheatherby's. I am not sure what it was about mine...They are single shot and in theory, should be more accurate than a bolt. I load all mine and probably shot 200 rounds of various bullets and powder charges out of each one and the best group I could get was about 1 1/4"s. Thats plenty good for a hunting gun but sure dissapointed me from what I expected. I changed scope, bases and everything and just never could get in lined out

I have a aftermarket custom on my encore it shoots very well, but it's usually not the rifle, it's the shooter. Encore has a longer lock time then a bolt rifle. So you have to really think about it when you shot it. From my experience, I have shot half inch groups and 1.5 groups... All about really taking your time and being steady

I had a trigger job done on my wifes encore and she now shoots MOA. The encore I shoot was built by Bullberry and I get 1/2 MOA out of it. I think both guns can shoot better than that but I just can't shoot as good as I use to.

I would need to know the twist rate and the barrel length to be able to select a bullet for you then develop the load around the gun and bullet combo.
Side note I've noticed about TC encores, look up slow motion video's of a TC, I would be willing to bet you would never pick that gun again watching it the kind of flex and movement they do in the action.
I would also look at optics and mounts and remount, and torque to 25 inlbs.
Another bullet to try is the Sierra Match King HPBT 168gr I also shoot 180 gr Game Kings and they do outstanding.

OK first time to do this but I call bs on this. I shoot a 15" 7-08 and shoot 1/2 MOA with it and could care less "if it flexes or the action moves around" to which I doubt it does.

I appreciate that Bobo but Can't be shooter error as I dial my rifles in with a lead sled. That way I know they are dead on, it helps when you have confidence and know the rifle will perform as long as I do my part. I do also realize rifles will shoot differently when free hand shooting or braced off a tree.

I load 180gr. Barnes Triple shock, in a 300 Weatherby. It has taken several nice Elk from The Co/NM border. But she don't get to go this year,Uncle drew a non-resident muzzle loader permit, on his first try!

That's kind of what I'm leaning towards. Took the 30-06 to the lease this past weekend and was shooting out to 435 yds. Was really kicking A--! Shooting the HSM Berger Vld in 168 gr., it was drilling the targets.
