6.8 AR for hunting - 08/03/11 03:38 AM

I was looking and getting a new rifle for hunting and I started thing about it....... I have a RRA 6.8 AR with a 16" barrel. I have a red dot on it now but don't see why I can'd put a scope on it and hunt deer. Does anyone use this setup for deer hunting? I would probably have a max of 200yrd where I hunt.

I've used it a couple times for hunting. Works really well.

What kind of distance were you shooting at?

Red deer was about 20 yards away and the whitetail was around 100.

I plan on using my new 6.8SPC for hogs and deer this fall. No reason good hunting loads won't work well for this purpose.

I plan to use mine on some hogs at least. My grandson will probably use it on deer. I'd say with some 95 gr TSX or 100 to 110 gr Accubonds will be more than capable of taking deer out to 300 yards if you do your part.

Ccoker has posted on using the 6.8SPC for hunting several times on here as have others. The reports in past threads are like these it works good.

Ccoker has really good knowledge of the 6.8. I've talked with him several times...

As for 6.8 for Deer and Hogs, no problem. I agree with MikeC, using a Barnes TSX would be more than plenty. If you don't reload, SSA (Silver State Armory) has really focused on ammo for the 6.8 and are very reasonable in price. I've seen the Barnes TSX and the Sierra Pro Hunters knock down hogs at sub 100yds. For me personally, I would keep it 200 yds or below. If you plan on shooting further than that, might consider the LR-308 if you are wanting to keep to semi-auto rifle.

Good Luck!

The 6.8 is an excellent deer/hog killing machine. I really like the Hornady 110gr HPBT. I have another 6.8 upper project working right now.
