Have you ever drove to lease and forgot something?

Have you ever drove to lease and forgot something? - 05/26/10 01:27 AM
Yeah. I did it twice over 12 years of my lease. Packed everything up from food, ammo, sleeping bags, phone charger, water I think everything under the sun and drive to lease and realize there was no deer rifle!
Luckily my lease was just under an hour away just curious if any of you have ever made the trip and forgot something you had to go back for.

On at least two occasions last season, I forgot to take off my prescription sunglasses when going for an evening hunt. Being nearsighted, I have to wear corrective lenses to see clearly at any distance.
Believe me, it's not easy looking into the shadows at deep dusk while wearing your Poloroids.

Buddy and I headed out completely packed for a 5 day stay at his ranch 1.5 hours away, got to the gate around 9PM, and he forgot the keys. Gate keys and Trailer keys.

Yeah, all the time. Over the years I've forgotten ammo, cameras, RX meds, binoculars, sunglasses, cell phone charger, gasoline, food items, knives, clothes, snake boots.... even keys one time. Everything but guns.
Thats one reason I've gone overboard stocking my cabin with cheap back-ups, so I don't have to remember much. Extra everything on hand so I can be senile and still hunt. Everything I can't leave at the ranch stays in my "back and forth basket", a laundry basket that stays by my dresser at home, and everything going back to the ranch goes in there. Time to go to the ranch, grab the basket, food, and guns, and I am pretty much good to go.

I've never forgot to pack the guns or ammo, and maybe it's because I take more than one firearm, so it's easier to remember when loading up, and I normally put the box of shells in the gun case with the rifle.
I did forget the small stuff, and one reason why I now pack everything I need into a normal size backpack, so it's grab and go and I don't have to worry if I have everything.
Keys stay on my key ring along with an extra that goes in the ash tray of the Jeep, with the cell phone in my pocket.
Grab the guncases and backpack and go! Anything else I forget I can live without it!

I can remember at least once when I went to unchamber my rifle before leaving the stand, only to realize that I never chambered a round once I got there.
Thankfully, it didn't cost me a deer.

Buddy and I were duck hunting about a 30 minute boat ride from the boat ramp. We unpacked everything on a shore line and realized we didn't get the guns out of the truck. My buddy went back for the guns while I set the decoys. Of course, right at legal shooting time a huge group of teal land in the decoys and there was nothing I could do but watch. My buddy gets back and ask if I saw anything and I said no, nothing yet. A little while later another huge group of teal dive bomb us and we get two each.

There's 2-4 rounds of 308 in every deer stand I hunt in.... have heard horror stories and it's worth splitting a box or two up and leaving it there...
We are considering an enclosed trailer, that stays stocked, complete with four wheelers, ready to go; so all any of us has to do is take the trailer....
I've forgotten things I wanted, but never anything I needed... if I have my pack and my rifle I am generally good to go. Camper keys are left in camp somewhere, gates have numeric combo's...

Not anymore.
I am fanatical about using a checklist, it is a 6 hour, 340 mile drive for us. That would be a long way to drive back to get something.
An item on the checklist does not get check off until said item is actually in the truck or trailer.

I went fishing a few weeks ago, picked up several dozen minnows, got to my spot fished for about ten minutes, got wrapped around a bush and broke my line. When I went to retie a new hook, I reached into my back pocket for my little tackle box and realized that I left it on my kitchen counter
So I ended up driving home and fishing my neighborhood pond where I caught a 6lb bass

Went on and Axis bowhunt in Uvalde once, mind you i live 6 hours away. I had on of those fancy arrow cases, that i kept all my arrows in, so i didnt have to remove my broadheads all the time, well, you guessed it, had my bow, but left my arrows sitting on the front porch at the house. I borrowed 2 arrows from my uncle, re-sighted my bow, and hunted for the weekend, didnt get an Axis either!
Went on a turkey hunt once, left all of my camo in the dryer at the house! Had to wear my BIL's, and ofcourse none of it fit, i looked like some homeless guy.

Hogs busted up a feeder one time and bent one leg. I bought a new leg and went down to the lease to stand the feeder back up. I slid the leg on the bracket and pushed the feeder back up. It was ½ full so it was a BEAR getting it up off the ground. Once I got it up I realized I didn’t cut the leg the same length as the other 2 legs. I FORGOT my hack saw. The only option I could think of was to us my AR-15 and make Swiss cheese where I needed to make the cut. Worked like a charm! Best power tool ever made!

Worse one we had was our air mattresses was sitting folded in the back seat and we were busy plinking with .22s. Well after shooting a .22 was set on top of the mattresses top down. When we went back later to get out or supplies and moved the .22 and the front sight ripped a nice gash in the air mattress. Needless to say we got to drive to town to pickup a new one. Luckily wal-mart is only about 30 minutes away.

I've never had to drive back HOME for something but I have had to drive back to the lease several time for something I forgot.
Medicine, left a shotgun in a blind once, forgot to lock up and turn off the lights, and I've forgotten to un-set the hog trap when I knew I would't be back for a couple of weeks.

Once during late dove season I got to deer camp with my 2-sided gun-case, that usually has a shotgun in one side and a rifle in the other, only to find a 20 and a 12-guage. I'd been duck hunting the previous day and swapped out the rifle for the 12-guage. Didn't even have a box of slugs.
When I was about 13 I was what got forgotten at deer camp. My parents and my aunt and uncle each thought I was with the other when they all pulled out, heading in different directions. I wandered into an empty camp at dusk, way before cell-phones were even thought of. We had water, cold drinks, and snacks in camp, and I had my .308 and a box of shells. I spent four days living off Dr. Pepper, Doritos, Moon Pies, and badly mangled squirrels and rabbits spit-roasted on coat-hangers. I missed a day of school in the process so it worked out OK.

Also pretty good ammo when you need to get outta trouble with mom and pop!

My buddy was kicked off a pro staff once because I forgot the video camera. I felt bad for him. It was my fault. I ended up leaving the staff of my own accord.
My father inlaw forgot his ammo once, his rifle another time, and his clothes another time. Where we hunt in Montana it's a 4 or 5 hour drive. He had to wear everyone else's stuff. We expect he's going to forget something. It's kind of a tradition at this point.

TOOLS I was actually loading my shotgun and it got jammed. I need a screwdriver to get the thing apart so I could get the shell out. I did not have a screwdriver, even my leatherman would not work. I do not leave home without tools. Once I got home it took me 5 minutes to fix it.

The day after my Nephew was born I went to see him at the hospital and drove straight to Oklahoma;
Parked the truck walked in and before I could even get to the stand a HUGE 10point hopped the fence chasing a doe and one shot from the.270 dropped him.
I walked up as excited as could be, looked him over and then went to field dress him....."$hit wheres my knife!"
No knife in my pocket, pack, truck or toolbox and I have 200+lbs buck on the ground; after alot of grunting and horn pulling I finally loaded him up and drove to town and borrowed th DULLEST shrade known to man to clean and cape that buck.
My pack now has a knife, I carry a pocket knife EVERY WHERE now capable of doing the job, the trucks got one as well a spare.

forgot my ammo bag once, had both my rifles but no gun, typically i leave 3 in the mag of my .270 but i had taken them out for some reason. I had one of those streatchy ammo holders on my .22-250 so that saved the day.
now I keep a box of hornady at the ranch.
I used to leave my rifles down at the ranch, one weekend i decided to take them home, the next week our cabin was broken into an a shotgun and pistol were stolen

I've went out to the lease and forgot to bring a knife along. Usually it got left on my desk at work or in one of the drawers. A little store down the road sold the ones for key chains for $100, so I have 10 or so of them laying around. Only went off w/o bullets once and that was because I went to my dad's lease in his truck and forgot I had taken the clip out of my 300wm and put it in my console. Luckily my lease was just down the road, so I went and grabbed a few bullets I had stored in a dry storage compartment on my 4wheeler and made it back to sit on the stand before daylight.

When I was staioned in Phoenix, a friend and I drove to northern AZ for a week of mullie hunting. This was the one time he forgot his spare truck key to leave at camp and somehow we locked the keys in the truck. After we desprately tried to get in using a piece of wire we found, his wife had to drive 4hrs one way at 10 at night to bring us the spare set of keys.

I went up to run a few cats and was just about to my hunting spot when I realized I forgot my dogs..lol For any type of big game hunting, I've found that I'm more successful if I forget something. (knife, camera, ???) During our fall bear season, its usually pretty warm out so, every once in awhile, I just plan to go look around and don't figure on getting anything so I wear shorts. Every single time, I kill a bear in a blackberry patch and turn my legs to hamburger.

Speaking of berries, my wife just realized she forgot to put the black berries in the berry cobbler she has in the oven. She is a little pissed right now. Guess I'll have some vanilla ice cream with cobbler and some berries sprinkled on the top.
As far as the getting to the lease without something, it happens all the time. Ive also been known to make it to the blind without, ammo, binos, and once even my gun.

Re: Have you ever drove to lease and forgot something? - 06/19/10 02:15 PM
WARNING LONG POST STORY!!!!!!!
Yes it did happen not my fault entirely though.
When I was starting back hunting back in 91 again after a few years away from it I had no rifle, owning only a .22lr and 20ga shotgun, but just a handful of repeated invites from a good friend. Well he had about half dozen rifles and lent me a Nice old Savage 99 E in .243 win. I picked it up from his auto part store where he kept them all and went to range sighted in some special federal Premium ammo I bought for it.
Then i took it back Because I didn't want to have it stole from my home etc..not being able to replace it. Well come opening day of season in glen rose Texas we were unloading all the gear etc. He started going through the rifle he brought up,one for another friend of ours, one for his grandson ,his own favorite...but alas not the one I was to use and had sighted and been shooting all summer. Well okay a friend/common-law/brother in-law type was coming out later that evening and was going to swing by and pick up "ricks(borrowed)rifle" in the brown case. Well latter that night he pulls in everyone's spirits are high happy etc...He whips out the case and my friend goes ...uhhh...wrong brown case!
so we what did he bring? a Sprig field action rifle in 6mm. Also had about12 rounds ina baggie in the soft case with it. They stuck a paper plate up about 75 yds away and shinned a spotlight on it and I proceeded to pop a few shots at tit. Hit hit hit. They were like damn good boy that will do.
Come morning my original stand location a tower box blind had blown over in the night. I humped it back to camp garbed a spare truck there and drove to bottom of hill down on the Paluxy river. Hunted a ground blind watching a maze field there. One of the biggest bucks of my life busted me in the blind and never got a chance to shoot as he bounded nearly over the top of me.
good thing though as about 10 minutes latter a bobcat strutted out @ 50 yds and I proceeded to miss him twice.
dumbfounded I began to suspect the rifle. So I marched back up the way I drove in to to the top of the hill and thought Id walk and see what I could at the "tops" as we called the ridge and fields there. I busted a large flock of Rios and actually was able to circle wide and intersect some of the slower ones about 30 minutes latter. A large Gobbler walked out not 50 feet and I proceeded to take his head off and of course missed by a mile.
well end this story ..when I got back to camp I walked about 150yds down from cabin set up the paper plate stuck a large orange dot on it and leaned over the hood the truck to shoot. It was 2" high at the range so How I would have ever hit anything at the close ranges I was at would have amazed me.

Yep sure have. I once forgot the shells to my rifle. My dad made me carry my rifle around anyway. Once on a Colorado mule deer hunt I forgot the keys to my trailer. Luckily my wife was coming to meet us and hadn't left yet. Sure was a rough night sleeping til she arrived the next day.

I forget stuff all the time, never a gun or ammo, but have forgot the tent, keys to the trailer, keys to the fourwheeler (easy to hot wire), and clothing. Left my winch at home bc I didn't feel like lifting 110# and got stuck bad. Also have forgot the drain plug to the boat a time or two, that was fun, didn't leave it anywhere just forgot to put it in

forgot to grab a bottle of Jim Beam on the way to hunt for four days once. A buddy showed up a day later with a 1.75 as a gift cause I always supplied the bourbon. The thought of having to drink nothing but beer for four days was a real sick, sick felling.
