Bent axles?

Bent axles? - 09/25/23 11:14 PM

On my way through New Mexico last week on the east side of Albuquerque I hit a bump in the road, more like a curb than a bump, or maybe a crater.

It damaged a tire on the truck, and the axles on the trailer appear to be either bent or out of alignment. The front driver tire on the outside, and rear passenger tire on the outside are both wearing bad. After about 1500 miles they are now showing metal. I can’t visually see any damage to the axles or hangers or springs, and haven’t taken a tape measure to it yet. The hit was hard enough to cause some pain in my back.

Can trailers be aligned? If so, who east of Dallas can do it?

Truett Worrall Company can fix you up. They’re off Harry Hines in the hospital district.

Tape measure and leaf u bolt adjustment is what I do.

Measure center of axle from fixed point on both sides to see if it’s out.

probably sheared the centering bolt, same bolts hold the leaf spring leaves together. Axle can shift forward or back an inch or 2 when this happens and tires on each end of that axle will wear like that.

Wow...are they still in business? I used to buy heavy leaf springs from them.

I’ve regretted selling that about 4,5 times since I did. Oh well.

II bent a hanger component once and the result was odd wearing tires. Bent about 3/8" out of square.

If you hit the exact same bump, but coming from the other way, I wonder if it would straighten it out?

Re: Bent axles? - 09/26/23 09:19 PM

Don't feel bad BP, I bent the hell out of the axle on my little 5x10 utility trailer last June while moving out of my house. After weeks of moving stuff and nearly dying from a heat stroke, I was exhausted and just wanted to be done. I had just loaded up the last load and backed up into an area that I normally don't and got hung up on a big Harvey stump that I forgot was there. Instead of doing what I knew I should have done I said screw it, put my truck in 4 low, and goosed it. BOOM! bang Tried to drive it down the road anyway and started smoking my brand new 10 ply trailer tires (pigeon toed BAD). Of course had to replace everything lol.

We’ve all been there Skinner. Couple weeks ago I couldn’t get up the center road at the lease with the trailer so I had to back out. Being almost dark I just shoved the trailer off into a pile of scrub and small mesquites so I could turn around. Now I don’t have trailer brakes and only 1 working light roflmao

It happens, LOL.

When I pulled out onto the black top and immediately saw smoke and two big black lines behind me, I looked myself in the mirror and said some inappropriate words to myself. roflmao
