Guy posting on local board says he’s been stuck on I 20 for nine hours. Exits are full of flipped or wrecked trucks. 1” of ice.

Says he’s covered 24 miles in nine hours.

My wife enjoys the building panic on the news down here. I can only watch so much. At least Grammy & Grampy's Daycare isn't open today. nuts I should probably go get some Ethanol-free gas for the generator, but I like living "on the edge."

Stalling a little before I leave Okla for E Tx. Hoping some traffic on the roads will break it up some. Trying to decide rather to go Marietta on 35 to DFW then East on 20 or go around through Sherman, Greenville, Mineola etc.....? Im hooked to an 18' trailer loaded down but Im unhooking, it can wait.

Not here the AH across the street parks the wrong way and always seems do it at night when I'm coming home.

Re: Roads in D/FW Area - 01/31/23 07:42 PM

Me and Dad went out to find something to eat. Most places are closed but found a Whataburger open. Worst roads were in the neighborhoods. Main streets were very deep with slush but not what I would call dangerous. Saw one 2 wheel drive car stuck trying to get out of the gas station while we were eating inside Whataburger. Several people tried to help but he just kept getting stuck over and over again. By the time we were leaving he was hooked to the back of a Chevy with a tow strap and they were dragging him home.

Tonight will be a absolute mess when this melt refreezes!! On top of that we are suppose to get another pretty heavy round in the morning.

Since I work from home, not much changes, except no grocery runs and no schlepping kids to sports. Luckily, things are busy enough with work that there's now watching anyone freeze thier baguettes off.

Denton back roads are terrible and the main roads aren't great either. All my routes are planned around avoiding hills and bridges. Driving a 2 wheel drive 1/2 ton service truck with 1,200 pound payload.

Re: Roads in D/FW Area - 02/01/23 01:12 AM

I drove in the Denton area today.

2011 was worse.

2021 was worse.

2022 and this are about on par.

In those years, we always found a couple of restaurants that were open. Not today. I hope to find one tomorrow.

I drove a AWD Lexus and a Prius today. Some of the side roads were a little bumpy due to ice. I had my 17 year old son driving me around for a little while. He needs to know how to get around if he needs to in this kind of weather.

Re: Roads in D/FW Area - 02/01/23 01:36 AM

Lived in New England for a winter 30 years ago and ski a few weeks a year. Have tons of experience in snow and ice and never had an issue. Own 3 very capable 4WD’s including a Jeep that’ll stay nice and warm in the garage until this thaws. I have no doubt of my skills, but I doubt the abilities of most of the others on the road.

Did have to drive home in this mess from the office last night. Was in the Jeep and had no issues other than idiots flying past me. Last one was a Tesla with a young girl yapping on the phone. Just shook my head and got to my garage.

GX is probably one of the best cars for the ice. Built on 4 Runner frame but much heavier. We have one as well and while I don’t really like the car, it’s 4WD capabilities are pretty impressive.

Re: Roads in D/FW Area - 02/01/23 01:42 AM

Made a huge pot of homemade chicken noodle soup today so after being bored most the day we decided to go deliver soup to my wife’s dad, mom, and sister’s family 3 different places but at least on the same road pretty much.

75 wasn’t bad at all both lanes were clear. All the back roads we took and neighborhood roads were terrible. 82 wasn’t much better, you can see the rut where people had drove but there was still thick ice on the road and slippery. Truck didn’t have any issue getting around though.

I can definitely say the new Nitto Recon Grapplers are good in ice/snow.

Re: Roads in D/FW Area - 02/01/23 01:47 AM

Business 121 is slick as snot

Toll road is not bad at all because of the amount of work and sand put on it.

Service roads and streets are crappy

Re: Roads in D/FW Area - 02/01/23 04:58 AM

Roads were fine going from Forney to Dallas. Bridges were iced but fine. 40mph was an easy pace with very little traffic. I’d almost prefer this over the typical drive into work dealing with a bunch of dumbazz’s

In 1997, I got blocked in by stuck 18 wheelers at the top of the frozen NB 35W to WB SW Loop 820 ramp. I was in my patrol car all night. Those crazy high ramps move in the wind. I’m scared of heights so that was pretty much hell night for me. Ever since I do everything I can to not drive on ice.

+1, I have owned 4x4s most of my adult life. 1983 was fun because it was all snow and we had some big drifts in Plano. When I was in high school a buddy and I took his mom's Cutlass duck hunting in Farmersville. Temps early in ghe morning were well above freezing then the front hit and we had thunderstorms with freezing rain. Ducks were pouring into the lake. Fortunately we made it home before the roads got too bad. I don't have a problem with sleet and snow. Ice is a whole different scenario. Experience driving in the winter helps a lot. I lived in northern WV for 5 years and job took me to places that got a lot of snow.

Roads were fine from Dallas to Forney at 6am. Hardest part of the drive was my driveway

Re: Roads in D/FW Area - 02/01/23 07:40 PM

35E in Denton has 2 lanes each way that is just like driving in the rain, just wet.

Side roads depend on how much traffic is hitting them.

Indeed. I have 4 at home and we have played every game in the house and kids have devoured every snack in the house.

It's raining (not sleeting) here and yet another day of no school Thursday. Bus drivers are hard to find and I'm pretty sure that's the issue. If they don't show up, there is no school.
