College football fines

College football fines - 09/27/22 02:00 PM

The Big 12 fined Texas Tech $50,000 because the fans stormed the field after defeating Texas.

A donor stepped up and paid the fine so it doesn’t matter I guess but the whole thing makes me wonder.

The fans shouldn’t have been on the field but how exactly was Tech supposed to stop this? Build a border fence style wall around the field ? Line up 500 armed guards around the field and start shooting as the fans come? I would guess at least 5,000 people rushed on to the field in about 30 seconds. How could that possibly be stopped? I understand some idiot shoved a player or something and that individual should be punished but how is that the university’s fault?

Re: College football fines - 09/27/22 02:20 PM

I don’t think it can or will be stopped, without seriously impacting the game. Fines have gone up to 250k.

I’ve seen the video of the Longhorn player getting pushed. That’s 100 percent wrong and kid deserved to get the [censored] beat out of him. But to think that is below every fan base is ridiculous.

universities cannot act like they condone this, because if someone is seriously hurt or killed they didn’t make necessary accommodations to prevent it.

TT fans have always been regarded as bush league. They stormed the field against an AAC team (Houston) and #22 Texas. What else needs to be said?

They throw stuff at opposing basketball players, scream obscenities, crowd team busses and shake them, etc....none of this is new.

NCAA can’t sale signed jerseys anymore or have any royalties on players , so they got to make their money some how.

That is nothing new at a lot of schools.

Does Aggie still rush the field after every single home game win? You know where the freshman in the corp chase the yell leaders on the field then go toss them in some nearby fountain?

I hate aggy as much as the next guy, but I only recently recall them rushing the field after beating Bama and LSU. I don't believe they rush the field after every single home game win.

The NCAA doesn't impose the fines, the conferences do. So the NCAA doesn't collect or benefit at all from the fines. Fines paid by SEC schools for violating the field rushing policy go to the SEC Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund. The Big 12 does something similar.

I've got news for your Gringo, there's a segment of every fan base like that, including you 'horns. I played in a ton of opposing venues, and I speak from experience. Granted, some are worse than others, but stuff happens everywhere.

I posted this on another thread and got zero input from any 'horns fan. Maybe you have a comment?

Our fans can be brutal, and I've said it many times. Then again, there's this one that the 'whorn nation chooses to deny.....

Well, well, well......that video was miraculously taken down. It showed a FEMALE TTU fan doing a video selfie doing the dreaded "horns down" thing, and a UT football player running up and shoving her somewhat violently to the ground. Crickets........

These things can happen and do happen with every single fan base. Can’t judge them all by a few losers.

Some are worse than others. Tennessee comes to mind.

There is no Tweet. Of course there are bad fans everywhere, including Texas. I'd probably say tOSU is the worst. What I'm getting at is that the TT administration essentially condones the bad behavior. If they condemned it, it wouldn't be happening so regularly. Surprised all the aggies on this board are quiet on this subject- they were probably the biggest targets of the Tech fan antics.

Gots to sit & watch TU get destroyed by Nebraska in the conference play off game or something like that at the Alamo Dome years back. Telling you right now, the bush league sand aggies have nothing on them there tea sips with money and no dignity - nothing. Haughty bunch of drunk, sore losers, the like I had never seen before. Many of their parents should have been spanked.

Bobo do you remember we discussed facial recognition some time back?

Do you remember the news about football hooligans' in England and Europe some years ago?

Well they largely reduced that problem by identifying and banning hooligans' from games using that technology.

Would probably not affect fans storming the field but it would individuals. It's usually a small percentage of people who want to misbehave. Give them some accountability.

Yes I remember, interesting application use. Makes sense, since it’s same way the casinos technically use it for.

I think fines for storming is dumb. Academies storm every touch down at home games. Grant it, it stays in the end zones though. What are sports with out fan interaction and hype? Obviously there is fun and safe tortillas and not safe ice balls

It's probably already used here. Unruly fans at US pro sporting events get identified and busted very quickly.

If you don't want to be around college aged kid behavior - don't go to college sports events. It is pretty damn simple.

On a side note. I think social media has made kids feel untouchable. They say whatever they want with no consequences. Back in the day, word got back someone was talking [censored]. You would drive three counties over just to confront them. Kids feel their cellphone camera will keep them from an azz whooping.

UT wants to cry about one of their FB players getting bumped (and yeah, the guy needs to be found and punished). Meanwhile they've gone out of their way to cover up one of their basketball players committing domestic violence against his girlfriend, who he also threatened with a gun. And he's still on the team. F* UT.

I think as a whole, most fans are pretty gracious, but there are bad apples. Several years ago we were tailgating in Stillwater for Bedlam. A couple of Sooner fans had walked by and all was going well, but as one group walked by, a group of OSU students were walking the opposite direction and one of the students got into an older guys face and started yelling OU SUX OU SUX ... all while about 3" from the guy's mug. Sooner wasn't taking it and gave the kid a full pass block shove sending him about 10' back and on his tail. OSU kid looked at us like we would help, but we were laughing too hard to assist. Everyone, even my beloved Pokes, has knuckleheads.

I hate to see that, but you're correct. At the end of the day its just a game. Bedlam hits a raw nerve.

The university has the obligation to provide security for fans, players, coaches. 50k is not enough to get anyone’s attention.

SEC has been going 250k. That gets a little more attention. You can increase your security budget by 50k or pay 250k.

You beef up security, more bodies. You run promos throughout the game reminding people not to be on the field. You run ads in the school rag all week. If you can keep the students off the field, the rest will stay off. Additionally, you tell the students if it happens again, there will not be any students allowed at the following game.

So do you think if they put 500 security guards on the field, ran the ads and messages during the game and the field was still rushed that the university would be fined?

I get the university has an obligation to provide security for the fans, players and coaches but at what point are things physically impossible? A crowd of thousands of people is going to do pretty much what they want unless serious force is used to control them. Is the Big 12 wanting schools to club, pepper spray, rubber bullet fans for rushing fields? I am completely ok with them ID’ing anyone on the field and pressing charges against them but fining the school sort of seems like blaming Ford for a drunk driver.
Posted By: Roll-Tide

Re: College football fines - 09/28/22 04:46 AM

I think you only have to control a few points. Still will take a couple hundred security. Student section mainly. But at the end of the day. You warn them not to get on the field and they do it anyway. Don’t be surprised if pepper spray and tasers come out. They could be arrested and or banned from future games.

I get it. It’s fun and exciting for them. Just no excuse to push a player who just played his azz off. Crap like that will cause an overreaction.
Posted By: Espy

Re: College football fines - 09/28/22 12:49 PM

They can control it if they want to. Been to many games where I knew you better not run on the field. A lot of schools encourage it saying they would be happy to pay the fine.

Re: College football fines - 09/28/22 12:56 PM

They're not going to taze or spray anybody, that would be insane. Yes, it's hard to stop a huge mob with limited security. IMO they've had their fun; there were decent reasons for both UH and UT but there really aren't any for the rest of the season. Baylor comes to Lubbock but is no longer undefeated; beating them would be great but not huge as we beat them last time in LBK. WVU? Why? KU? Same. Beating OU would be sweet to end the year but unless it's for the conf title, not too much reason there either. I hope they've gotten it out of their system. I appreciate their enthusiasm but let's clean it up.

I was in Brazil many years ago and visited a soccer stadium, they had a literal moat about 10 ft wide and 5-6 ft deep with only a couple of bridges for designated people to cross. There were only benches in the stadium, no seats. The locals said everyone stands anyway. Folks love their sports!
