Taiwan 'Matters Far More To The World.... - 08/14/22 04:49 PM

Taiwan 'matters far more to the world economy' than many people realize, economist explains

Quote
Leather added that 92% of the most advanced semiconductors are made by TSMC in Taiwan, making its dominance at the high end even greater. So if Taiwanese semiconductor supply were disrupted for a prolonged period, electronics and automotive manufacturers would struggle to find alternative suppliers.

Taiwan’s autonomy has become a key geopolitical interest for the U.S. due to the island's dominance in the global market for microchips. Semiconductors, which go in everything from smartphones to cars, have become an integral piece to our daily lives.

In a 2021 report from the Biden Administration, it was explained that "the United States is heavily dependent on a single company – TSMC – for producing its leading-edge chips." Also in the report, "the lack of domestic production capability also puts at risk the ability to supply current and future national security and critical infrastructure needs."............

I simply do not understand why the US can not be independent of foreign sources for goods. It is as much a national security issue as a power play issue.

We should not he reliant on any foreign company for anything, and the current situation in all markets shows how this affects everyone in the US. Utterly ridiculous.

Take all our foreign aid packages and invest it in domestic productivity. Problem solved.

Agreed, trying to make sense out the current situation is frustrating. I guess it's all a matter of following the money.

You can thank unions for a lot of why manufacturing left this country.

They get kickbacks after they’re in office. That’s why Manchin flipped. He’s gonna make big money in the long run.

Fabs are super-expensive, $B’s to build ($17B for the Samsung plant in Austin) and several years to complete. Most of your complex fab’s are just in the fab business, they’re not also making end-user products. My former well-known employer did both and exited the fab business 10-15 years ago as it was a money loser. That company and my current one, both design very unique processors, they don’t also fab them as it’s a very complex/difficult mfg operation. Intel has had some difficulty mastering the ever-shrinking element size as an example. Not to say they’re inept, just stating it’s very difficult work to master. Samsung, TSMC and others are building new fab’s here and do a lot of the complex fab work. There will be more build work done here over time, which is good, they likely won’t be US-owned.

It’s really not much different than the oil story… We continue to import oil as it can still be bought cheaper elsewhere than it is to produce here. The US isn’t a low cost place to build anything, but we are an exceptional place for innovation.

Once again, Yankee TB has no clue and Charlie understands the issue, but does not know why. Google the requirements involved with the Paris Climate Accord and you will understand how China and India, both "developing" nations, have cornered this important production market.

Beto biggest donation is from Tench Coxe and his wife. Both Californians.
He made his billion on chip maker Nvidia.

California is buying Texas with poster boy O’Rourke.

Currently, oil probably can be bought cheaper elsewhere. But, just 2 years ago, we were energy independent and we were buying it here, and it was cheaper...I wonder what changed?

Re: Taiwan 'Matters Far More To The World.... - 08/15/22 03:33 AM

We send hundreds of billions overseas in a decade, why couldn't we take that and invest it in fabrication facilities for the US, and then we can subsidize them as we do farmers.

Yes I realize it is expensive, but I would rather spend the money on US made stuff than foreign aid that goes right back to politician's family members.

And yes, I realize this can not happen overnight, but it wouldn't take 20 years either. Seems we been dealing with the China threat for quite a while....

Re: Taiwan 'Matters Far More To The World.... - 08/15/22 03:20 PM

The fab thing isn't like the oil thing... We/US companies know oil and every step from where it might be until it emerges as a product at the end, so the "just invest" idea works. Manufacturing a chip is hard and we don't have the expertise/facilities or enough of it, to invest for them to start springing up here as US companies. Same economics on why it's cheaper for GM to buy a wheel vs make it. I'll settle for someone else building a fab here. I also believe the COVID supply chain impact is leading to more mfg. overall being moved/done here.

I think I do understand the issue and it has nothing to do with politics or the Paris Climate Accords and it's not China/India. TBar's opening comment is correct, this is from last year.
