Me, I love the mountains of Colorado. Pagosa Springs has been great. Been there twice in the last month. What are some of ya'lls getaways to beat the heat?

Heading back to southwest Colorado next week for the 3rd time since June. Can't beat it in the summer esp. when it's 110 and miserable here.

I spend much of my youth running the mountains between Pagosa and chromo. Pagosa has changed in a lot of ways but still the same in a lot of good ways.

Be the first year I haven’t hunted there in some capacity in almost a decade. Those mountains will always be special but the remoteness has faded.

White mountains of Idaho are very beautiful and more remote.

I'd love to have a place in the mountains I could stay about 6 months each year, a couple weeks is just no real relief from this heat. I'm thinking about selling the farm and buying a place with mild summers.....I'm in San Antonio this week, headed to Loreto, Mexico at the end of the month, you would think I would learn to plan better.

When my grandfather retired from police force, he would run security for the Colonial and then off to the mountains until Nov. My parents and Grandparents hand built that cabin and finished it the year I was born. It was only 5 hours from the ranch so I got to spend much of my youth up there, even got a job riding fences.

My grandmother stopped being able to go when she hit 80’s. Unfortunately my dad sold it year I graduated college. I’ve tried to buy it back twice now.

I think you should. If I was retired I damn sure be hard pressed to miss a mountain sunrise and sunset while enjoying a hot drink on the porch swing.

We rarely vacation. But, a couple of years ago, I hunted Africa. Due to cost, probably won’t do it again. This year, wife and I will go somewhere, maybe Vegas or?

What I want to do is fly to New York then to Canada. Take a train to the West Coast. Then to Alaska for some fishing. Don’t know whether I’ll make that.

My vacation tastes are different than most of the posts. I enjoy solitude and my vacations reflect it. Summer time vacations are in out of the way places wade fishing the gulf coast. I used to enjoy salmon fishing the pacific north west or trout fishing the rivers and streams in the mountains of the north west. Fall and winter I love spending time freelancing on the high plains with my bird dogs.

We just got back from Marathon, and had an absolute blast. Not my typical vacation as I'm a "lets go to the mountains" guy but I had a very enjoyable time, and hope to go back every year

Re: Where is your Go To vacation? - 07/20/22 10:46 PM

I am too old and the wife does want to go anywhere except a casino. But when I actually had a job we took the owners of the plane to Athens for the Olympics. We could not park the plane there so we flew it to the island of Limnos. That was the best paid vacation I have ever had. Beautiful clear water. Cheap food and lodging. Great people. Was a heck of a working vacation. But most were working for a great very well-off family.

Lake City Colorado. Been going about 30 years. Skipped last year but going back next year.
Great area, good fly fishing. Not to many people.
Lake City sit at 9500 foot and we stay at 9800 up the Lake Fork of the Gunnison river about 6 miles from town.
If I had to chose an absolute favorite place it would be Kauai Hawaii. Most perfect place on earth IMO.

Did Lake City with Dad and brothers there about 30 years ago. Beautiful place, good fishing - lake and tank fishing. Annual festival celebrating the last known US cannibal, Edward Packard whose travel party got snowed in at the Smongolian Pass in 1860s or 1870s I believe. 20+ were in the party and I think only Edward and 1 or 2 others made it down. Authorities went up in the Spring and found evidence of cannibalism. After a couple of years in jail, think he was let go and even later received a presidential or governor's pardon. I had a cool t shirt from the festival.

Every year we try a few new places, but the ones we seem to go back to the most are the Bahamas (Atlantis), Seaside, FL (Watercolor), Lost Pines (Bastrop), and Hot Springs....we hit at least 3 out of those 4 every year.

Here's a video my buddy Dr. Jackson Bean made when he and his wife Jennifer visited us last year when we were staying in Key Haven. We love the house we rent down there for a month to 6 weeks. Couldn't get it this year, but have arrangements with the owner for next year. Problem is, we found another really cool house for this year.

Lake City is not quite that high, it's 8700 feet. We own a piece of property just north of town with an incredible stretch of the Lake Fork. Heading back there next week. These are a few fish my sons and I caught one afternoon 2 weeks ago. [Linked Image]
