It's been a number of years since we had a thread about member professions. In the past it was very helpful to know what the other members do/did when seeking advice about most any kind of subject.

First of all it was a joke, maybe a bad one but a joke and I was not specifically talking about his wife I was talking about wives/women in general!

Obviously you know nothing about class or you would not make such a blanket statement so STFU.

Firefighter/Paramedic

I taught science and coached football for two years and then installed granite countertops while I went to the fire academy.

Became at firefighter in 2011 and haven't regretted it once. I have been assigned to Station 5 for the last 9.5 years and have been on Engine 5 and Ladder 5 about equally. It's the closest station to my house and middle of the pack call volume wise. I get a wide range of types of call since our running district has all times of neighborhoods. We are also right off I20.

This job is very interesting in that it is really hard on your body and mental health but for whatever reason I love it so much.

Retired since 2009. Spent time as Chemical Process Engineer, then off to blend and trade heavy oils for another company, then moved to light oils (gasoline, diesel, jet kerosene) and trading of light oils on NYMEX, then on to a Petrochemical company from where I eventually retired. It was mostly a good ride, except for a few years with Enron (incompetent idiots and crooks).

Not much anymore. Seems I'm fighting with Social Security to keep them from stealing what I earned in 32 plus years of working for the government and 7 years of public service as an EMT. Wish I was back either chasing illegal aliens or working for Customs catching dope and smugglers on or near the Rio Grande. Now, if I'm not fighting social security, I'm mostly bored or here and TFF.

I dunno, they're saying I didn't have medical insurance when I was working EMS in Presidio or Fort Stockton. Which is BS, I not only had city/county Blue Cross Blue Shield I've had it ever since I retired from Government service back in 2020. So, it's some form of Medicare/Medicaid bovine scat. What PO's me is that they are trying to screw me for money and yet handing out medical services and social security to MF'ers whose clothes aren't even dry yet from sneaking across the river.

Forester. I grow Trees and wildlife on 130,000 acres of private land and all that goes with that. I’m not much on awards but I’ve been recognized for the wildlife and habitat work that people I have worked with have accomplished on private land at the state and regional level. After I am gone I hope my legacy will be as a conservationist that was able to leave better than what I started with to those that come after me. Ive been blessed many times over.
As a side bar: my occupation has allowed me the opportunity and places to shoot 4 or 5 days a week for three and a half decades which is how I come up with a lot of the crap I post about shooting.

Quit the oilfield in 2020 after 10 years of supply chain.

I had been moonlighting on a software development project with a partner/buddy. Went full time with that 10/2020, so now we have 4 software product lines, and we also own the software development company (up to 9.5 employees). We have a direct to consumer product coming out in less than 60 days that we are pumped up about.

And as soon as the Coast Guard will approve my damn capt license, I will be running fly fishing trips on the coast a few days a week.

Road construction supervisor.
Started in 1977, still active.
I was in the chicken business for 15 years but sold out.
I still run cattle and make hay.
I use to have a dozer and wood cutting business but it got to be too much.
I still have my dozer but I just do what I need done.
When I was younger the sky was the limit.

cheers Similar here. I've done a little Commercial & Residential Electrical work, but my career is in Industrial Electrical & Instrumentation (plants/refineries/land rigs and primarily offshore platforms). Started as a green helper in 1995 and worked up to become a Lead, Foreman, Superintendent, QA/QC, QA/QC Manager, & Project Manager. Did some estimating but never officially held the title. Started in E&I Construction, but eventually got into Commissioning/Start Up as an E&I Tech and worked up from there. Been there for a long time now and have worked a multitude of roles in the Commissioning world. I've been behind a desk for years now, but do miss my tools sometimes.

We have similar backgrounds. up

Have recently started a little side job raising free range chickens & ducks for eggs, sometimes I regret that decision LOL. Sh** everywhere.

I hope he is enjoying retirement as much or more than I am. We spent many a long hour in the old polyethylene plant. Ask him what a DECOMP sounds like, especially when you are in the next reactor bay. The first one I was that close to shook my bones, thankfully I had earplugs in.

In my long list of jobs I forgot a couple of clubs that I worked at, I was the night time manager at a very low class topless bar Dallas Gentleman's club back in the early 90's, friends of mine Randy & Brent Dumas owned it.
I thought it was going to be a pretty cool gig, NOT I was an under-paid baby sitter for a bunch of crazy messed up women.

Now had I worked at an upscale one like the Mens club I bet it would have been a lot more enjoyable.

I was working in a machine shop in Odessa when I was a kid, before I started selling. I was eating lunch with my boss one afternoon. I asked him how he liked running things. He told me he’d been managing a machine shop for thirty years and felt like all he was qualified to do was run a daycare. He said he should have become a salesman. That stuck with me.

Re: What do you do for a living? - 06/26/22 11:50 AM

Managed ranches since 1989. Work outdoors every day, work with wildlife everyday and got paid to do it everyday. In this time I also did a 7yr stint in the late 90's-mid 2000's working with landowners/lease hunters managing their deer while working for a large feed store group in South Texas. About 2012 I semi-retired and bought my own place to live and work on. Sold that place and another place I owned last year in March and bought a 300 acre place in NW Gillespie County...but could not get electric, well, septic or house built so I bought a house in Brady. Hated living in town and was bored living 55 miles from my place. Had a friend wanting me to manage his place so I went back to work and loving it. My place borders his place so I can now live and manage his place and work on mine in my spare time. Full-filled a life long dream of owning and living back in the Hill Country. Life has been good to me and very blessed to do what I love every day.

Most prior was IT including various management positions. Prior to that was Programmer Analyst positions at several companies, prior to that computer operator.

Taught IT Concepts at a University for 3 years(part time)

Did 4 years in USAF in early computers. 64-68

First real jobs were farm/ranch hand. That’s where I learned that I really didn’t like to mess with horses.

Restaurant business most of my life. Working through college parttime for a startup restaurant company. I saw the genius of the owner/entrepreneur and quit my day job and went to work with them. I rode the wave of his success as I worked my way from the very bottom to VP of Operations as we grew from about 20 to 30 full service restaurant/bars. When they eventually sold the company for many many millions, I opened my own and kept that going till I sold it and soon after retired. Very glad I sold before this covid and economy kicked in.
