Just a reminder to get it checked after 50.
I go tomorrow for my first , been “prepping” all day. Which means starving yourself and so far 12 trips to the bathroom.

Tough way to lose weight
Bit of advice; Find a doctor with small hands to do your initial exams preferably a woman, you will thank me later

Don't put it off. I did until I was 62. Finally had my first, they found colon cancer. That began 5 years of surgeries, hospital stays, home bound nursing, nutrition from an IV for months and many, many trips to the ER. I about have it licked now but I sure wish I had started the colonoscopy tests a dozen years earlier. I hope you have a clean bill of health from yours.

It's funny, my new doc doesn't do prostate exams. He does check my PSA and said that as long as your stream is good, there's no need to check. Also, since we have no history of colon cancer in the family he recommended the Cologuard. it was super easy and not intrusive.

The reason i posted, is after talking to many of my friends the same age, they have not done it and aren’t planning on it. My grandfather died at 67 from colon cancer otherwise I probably would have put it off too.

Re: Colonoscopy. - 05/06/22 02:29 PM
I had my first at 48 due to family history. My brother is 6 years older and they found all kinds of polyps and chit in him. I didn't have anything cancerous, but the doc considered it a big time success story cuz it was right around the corner. Now I'm also on the 3 year plan, which is kinda chitty.

A friend of mine was on the 10 year plan. Three years into the 10, and he had gut problems. They opened him up, took a look and closed him back up. He lasted about 2 years. Get looked at.

Because of exposure to Agent Orange the VA has me the annual trip ticket to the examroom. After the first couple of times it becomes just another day of getting old.

Re: Colonoscopy. - 05/06/22 03:22 PM
I've had 3 in ten years. Find a polyp every time that has to come out. Better than the alternative I guess.
Pro-tip.. when they restrict you to clear liquids for 24-hours, don't kick the chicken broth up a notch with a shake or two of Tabasco. Trust me on this.

Cologuard. Simple and easy.
Does not take out polyps that eventually grow into tumors. Trust me on this, you never want them to become tumors, and the general anesthesia is worth the prep. Get this done at 45!

Then every 5 years at least, and your doc may want you to do it more often.

Yeah I agree, everytime I get one they remove polyps. And this not just for men, girls too. My wife's last one, they removed a big one, and doc said it is good thing she came in when she did, I had to really twist her arm to get her to go, good thing she listened to me.

the genetic test will tell if you have polyps or not. My Dr. was very clear on this. the only downside is you have to do it every three years.

Mine would have said the same. No one in my family has ever had it. It's good to listen to your Dr.

I've got two under my belt.
'Next one in 5 (or is it 7?) years 'cause they found a polyp. The older I get, the more fasting sux. Why is that?

Oh yeah RT, don't think you're gonna come out of the procedure all hungry as heck and eat whatever you want. Keep it bland for a while... trust me. Extra spicy Chicken E tenders were a lot spicier on the way out than on the way in.

You guys are just lucky and don’t know it. I had a colonoscopy in 1980, which was required for a new job. I showed up full of poo, had 2 or 3 enemas that were performed by a cute blond nurse in a room with other medical folks. Then the scope was done with NO meds. It was awful.

Re: Colonoscopy. - 05/07/22 12:48 PM
Well, NORML, the job that I got after suffering through that scope job paid me over 7 times annually what I had been making in the job I left. It was a lifestyle changer. But, all they had told me was that I needed to pass a physical for the new job. I had never even heard the term colonoscopy, or the fact it was part of the upcoming physical.
I would have gladly had the scope job again, for that kind of big money. It was more like a short term bad experience for long term good luck.
I’m sure you can understand why I was very reluctant to get scoped years later. I was thinking all scope jobs were like that first one, but thank goodness they weren’t. Still unpleasant test though.

A very good post Roll Tide, such an easy thing to do that might save a life.
I did it at 48 years old and all was good. Doc told me to return when I am 60. So four more years and I will not put it off.
I am glad they knock you out for the exam, you just wake up and go home, after a double cheese burger.
