Freer Rattlesnake Roundup Fatality - 05/02/22 03:00 PM

Unfortunately, the snake had other ideas and the handler paid the ultimate price, https://www.kvue.com/article/news/l...503-e531ae83-ef3a-490c-a750-8b22c8bac7af

Wow that sucks may he R.I.P.

Surprised they do not milk the venom out of them before they do their shows?

Re: Freer Rattlesnake Roundup Fatality - 05/02/22 03:04 PM

said he was bit on the shoulder, guess he was holding it down from the head

I guess it's not IF you will be bitten but WHEN. Goes with the job.

I love to watch these critters, but I would NEVER "F" with them.

Sad that it happened, but there's just not a lot of upside to playing with rattlesnakes.

The risk reward here makes no sense. Not like snake handling is a lucrative business.

But prayers to his family, and if he went out doing what he loved, then good for him.

Agreed

Kind of like messing with a bull. Sooner or later it is going to happen and just have to pray it isn't this bad.

I am really surprised the snake wasn’t milked enough or at all. RIP Sir

Kind of a later in life thing he picked up, said he was 60 and with over 20 years of snake handling. Think I'll stick to hitting golf balls into my 60s and beyond.....

Re: Freer Rattlesnake Roundup Fatality - 05/02/22 06:55 PM

Back in the 70s the japs got on a kick of putting rattlesnake blood in their sake thinking it made their chopstick stiffer and lasted longer.
My cuz and I had access to several sotex ranches that we’d catch snakes on and call the jap connection in Houston and we would meet in SA and they’d buy our rattlers. Made some dayum crazy money doing that over a couple years. Then that fad or whatever it was went poof and our free pasture money ceased.
I never got hit but cuz did once....one night in hospital and that was it for him. Simply didn’t effect him that bad. But he was also the toughest cuss I ever knew

I saw that too and looked extremely careless to me.

I like to handle snakes, including rattlers, but like Jes, I don’t give them any opportunity to bite me. I’ve never understood that.

Me too...snake shot, hoe, shovel pretty much eliminates the opportunity. Rarely will I let one have a pass...I've seen the damage they do to a good dog.

Rest easy snake handler. Condolences to the family. There are parallels to Steve Erwin.

Saw a big water snake while fishing a tank a few hours ago, at the end of a 6'6" fishing rod is close enough. If you mess with them your gonna get bit!

So stupid and preventable. Closest thing to wrangling snakes for me is earthworms on a hook.

Years ago , a friend of a friend was competing in a bagging contest. He got tagged on the forearm. He said his arm swole up as big as his leg.
Thankfully he survived , with some ugly scars and muscle loss.
