In a surprise move on Tuesday, the Senate passed legislation making daylight saving time, which began this week, permanent for the entire United States.

The bill, titled the “Sunshine Protection Act,” was co-sponsored by Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.). It passed unanimously.

Rubio cited increased heart attacks and car accidents during standard time as reasons the country should do away with clock-switching, in addition to people enjoying more sunlight at the end of the day for things like sports.

“Pardon the pun, but this is an idea whose time has come,” Rubio said Tuesday as he asked the Senate to pass the bill.

This would be awesome. Would let me wake up later to go duck hunting. Get in a few more after work hunts. Have time to do chores in the afternoon.

The US Senate has passed a bill to make Daylight Savings Time permanent.

The Sunshine Protection Act was passed by unanimous consent on Tuesday.

“I’m hoping that after today, [the bill] will go over to the House, they’ll act quickly on it. I know it’s not one of the most important issues confronting America, but it’s one of those issues where there’s a lot of agreement. And I think a lot do people wonder why it took so long to get here,” Mr Rubio added.

The Florida Senator said that if the bill is passed in the House and signed by President Joe Biden, the change would be delayed to November 2023 because “the airlines, the rails, transportation methods, others, have already built out schedules based on the existing ... timeline”
.

“The good thing is that if we can get this passed, we don’t have to keep doing this stupidity anymore ... pardon the pun, but this is an idea whose time has come,” Mr Rubio quipped in conclusion.

Does this require bipartisan support to pass? Because I have zero faith in that actually happening. bang

I'm all in favor of DST year round, but the teachers unions may kill it. I'm not sure what their reasoning is, but they've opposed it in the past and they're one of the democrat's biggest special interest groups (also called donors).

So if this passes there will be no more switching back to standard time in the winter. I like light in the morning. I would prefer standard time.

I could care less if we do DST or standard time. I just don't want to switch back and forth all the damn time!

As long as Trump doesn't say he likes it or is in support of it.....it will have a chance to pass.

Otherwise....Dems will kill it (just because).

DST Bill - 03/16/22 04:07 AM

https://www.cnn.com/2022/03/15/politics/senate-daylight-saving-time-permanent/index.html
Quote
The Senate on Tuesday passed a measure that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent across the United States.
The Sunshine Protection Act passed the chamber by unanimous consent. The bill would still need to pass the House and be signed by President Joe Biden to become law. If the measure clears Congress and is signed into law, it would mean no more falling back every year in the fall.
CNN has reached out to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office for comment on when or if the House will take up the bill and did not immediately receive a response.

Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, a sponsor of the legislation, said he doesn't have any assurance the House will take it up, but "it's an idea whose time has come."

Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who was presiding at the time of the bill's consideration and who represents Arizona, a state that doesn't observe Daylight Saving Time, could be heard on the mic saying "Ooh, I love it." Following its passage, she let out a "Yes!"

The bill has bipartisan backing including several Republican and Democratic cosponsors.
"You'll see it's an eclectic collection of members of the United States Senate in favor of what we've just done here in the Senate, and that's to pass a bill to make Daylight Savings Time permanent," said Rubio in remarks on the Senate floor. "Just this past weekend, we all went through that biannual ritual of changing the clock back and forth and the disruption that comes with it. And one has to ask themselves after a while why do we keep doing it?"

"If we can get this passed, we don't have to keep doing this stupidity anymore," added Rubio.
Sen. Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican, expressed support for the bill after being told it had passed.
"I just think the extra hour at the end of the day consistently is better than having it dark when kids go to school and dark when kids get home," he said.

We had a guy at the lease that was hell bent on changing the feeder times when we return to regular time in the fall. He would call me and ask me to change them if he couldn't make it. He was afraid that the feeders would be feeding in the middle of the night, what a goober.

We never do. We just leave them on CST. Time does not matter. Only sunrise/sunset matters. I have one clock and my thermostat that switch automatically. This means I will have to change 2 versus 6.

Re: It's Permanent They Made Daylight Saving Time Permanent - 03/17/22 01:20 AM

Adding an hour in the morning would put sunrise at about 8:15 - 8:30 in the colder months. That is here in San Antonio, northern states you can add to that. That would suck. And that is what got this idea removed when they tried this in the mid '70s. If I understand correctly.

Why not split the difference and move the time back 1/2 hour this fall and leave it there year round?

Honestly this would be the best idea to me as well but getting lifer politicians to agree on something this simple would have about as much luck as having Colt 45 leave and never come back. Some things are simply to much to ask for,

This. 100%. People doing a normal workday in the winter go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. Having daylight left over in the evening will be very beneficial. Other places, such as golf courses will benefit from the later sunset.

I sure hope it passes.
