Hey, if it makes anyone feel better, (it did for me,) people up here aren’t any better at driving in winter weather than we are. They like to give us hell for it, but I see them in the ditch just as often anytime the roads are slick.

I drove from Allen back to Longview this morning. From the number of electric repair trucks I saw on I-20 headed west, they are expecting some really bad damage. I stopped counting after 150 trucks. There were bucket trucks, drill trucks, pole hauling trucks and several support trucks. Just about every truck stop had a bunch of them refueling, Buc-ees, had about 30 trucks.

Freezing rain coming down just north of Lake Ray Roberts - big drops too, freezing on contact. Trees already getting 'coated'.

It's only 30 degrees outside, but my heat-pump is already icing over pretty good;
- switching it over to propane-furnace only mode manually in a few, till precip stops.

Fannin County mud is terrible.

I noticed on jeopardy last night that half our schools in our 3 county area and a bunch more in OK schools were either closed completely or “distant learning” Thursday and Friday. Before we even knew or not of any actual weather was coming. I think Covid has made it too easy to close schools. If the kids gotta stay home for “remote learning” parents gotta stay home too.

I’m really not surprised.

Re: Snow Apocalypse 2.0 updates - 02/03/22 04:18 AM

Trees are getting coated with ice here in Lamar County. Just heard first VFD get toned for power line down a few minutes ago. I’m a volunteer myself so just waiting for stuff to hit the fan sometime tonight. My truck is getting coated with ice. Put the side by side with cab and heat in the garage (it fits unlike the truck). I’m 1\2 mile from our Sta. 2 so making a response at 20 MPH to the station isn’t an issue. Wind is blowing pretty good and rain is quite heavy at times.
Have generator ready to run a few heaters and the coffee maker! Y’all stay safe out there.

Little bit of mix here in Bexar County. Looong explanations on the local news about how a branch gets ice on it, touches a power line, and blows a transformer. It's like being back in Kindergarten. Local government update on TV at 11a.m. juggle I'm sure Nelson Wolfe will drag his dried up old bones on stage, put his cowboy bandana around his neck, and impart pearls of wisdom to the whole community that we should all be thankful for.

Re: Snow Apocalypse 2.0 updates - 02/03/22 03:14 PM

No snow here so far, but the ground is mostly covered with frozen sleet. The good news is that it froze before it coated the tree limbs. It’s still sleeting (frozen) and will continue to about 3 pm. Maybe a bunch of limbs won’t drop on the power lines this time. Temp is 27 right now and dropping, so there shouldn’t be any ice accumulation on the trees.

Before the rain became sleet, I was expecting about .30” of rain. We actually got 3 inches last night.

Wife is mad that blackbirds are shoving ‘her’ birds out of the feeders. Shooting them doesn’t keep the rest away.

At 7:29 am I looked out front and low and behold the wife parked under the Live Oak tree thats branches were sagging from the ice accumulation. No clue why she parks under it for all the stuff that constantly falls or drops out of there especially the bird crap. Decided to move it before a limb remodels it. The drivers door facing the north was sealed shut with the ice so my fat butt had go in the passenger side and crawl over.

We have a 60 miles drive if we head out...

Ours is a 150 mile drive. 121 to 820 to 377. I’ve been out over here and it’s not bad at 35 mph. Wondering what we get into as we go west/southwest

Check the TXDot cameras. I bet 377 is bad outside of Benbrook.

I left downtown Midland yesterday at about 1:00, and headed south right away. I always wondered what that building with all of windows broken out was.

It was the “northwest union life insurance” building. It’s been scheduled to be demolished a dozen times. The city doesn’t want to cut the check. Apparently it was really well built and full of asbestos. Mesa Petroleum was in there for many years, or so I’m told.

Got the pipes wrapped, fresh hay for the animals and heat lamps, turned the sprinklers off and drained, moved potted plants indoors. About to fire up the pit and grill some steaks. Whisky and fireplace for now.

18 here and still snowing a little. It has been snowing on and off since the sun came up this morning. It's pretty deep in some places. Lot's of limbs down also, several big cedars are split down the middle.

I had a flat in the ice last night. Luckily I was close to a Racetrack. Just left my truck there and called a buddy for a ride home.

Hopefully sun comes out this afternoon.

Luke and I did our morning walk leaving around 8:30. For 2.1 miles we had the world pretty much to our selves.

Made it through the mess on roads yesterday to the lease. A normal trip takes 2:15-2:30 door to door, we were 5:30 for our trip yesterday. Beautiful day today though…bring on the piggies!

Looks like I will firing up the chain saw when it dries out. I am right on the edge of the bullseye for ice. We never got snow just ice and then sleet. [Linked Image]
