Nicest Celebrity You Ever Met

Nicest Celebrity You Ever Met - 07/13/21 04:37 PM

The POS thread got me thinking about it. Got two that come to mind, mainly cuz due to their persona I thought they would be major douchers.

First one was the boxer Tommy Morrison. My brother and I were in a bar in Houston in the early 90's. I remember it wasn't long after Ray Mercer knocked him out on the ropes and it got ugly. He had two really good looking girls with him and when he walked by I said something about the Mercer fight... yeah, not smart. Ended up having a couple of beers and bullchittin' about all sorts of things. He was real down to earth and not at all what I expected. Life in the fast lane got him tho.

I've met Michael Irvin a couple of times. Both times he was all smiles and approachable as could be. Other than the fact that you could tell that he expected you to be a bit in awe/shock about meeting him, he was nice as could be both occasions.

Was working downtown for my Dad in the early 70's (don't remember which year)...we operated our business in an old line Dallas department store.

One day I went downstairs to head out for lunch....as I was walking through the mens department, I overheard two guys asking a salesperson if there was a good barbecue place nearby. He didn't know. I looked a little closer, and it was Fred Lynn and Carlton Fisk.....so I walked up and said "Yep, there is a place and I was heading there....you guys want to go?"

So...had a great lunch with two guys who were as nice as they could be to a 20 something year old. They were in town for a series with the Rangers....oh, and they left passes for me at Arlington Stadium too!

Pearl Baily and Louie Bellson (at the same time) at the now gone Bali Hai. Dad took mom and me to Las Vegas while working at NTS to set off a nuke back when they were still able to set off real ones. Mom is a jazz piano player and Pearl, if you know who she was, was a jazz singer. I asked her if she and Louie would drop by our room to say hello to mom and I didnt say a word to mom she was coming. When mom answered the door she about fell down!! LOL

Another time, Robert Redford at the Fuller Lodge when he was in NM filming the "Milagro Beanfield War". He was scouting for a location I think he said. I was running sound there for my mom who was doing a concert there that night and my brother didn't show up to help me set to. Robert helped me carry up my soundboard and then asked if he would mind if he played mom's piano. I said sure, it would help me set the levels.

Honestly, All of them had to tell me who they were because I was never expecting a celebrity to pop in but they did it in a way that was just matter of fact and not conceited in any way. Just regular folks that spoke in a regular way to a young kid at the time.
Fun times -

Victoria Principal; I used to work at the Tom Thumb at Greenville and Lovers. For several years they housed a number of the Dallas cast members around the Village when they would be shooting in town. She would come in once a week and order a full sheet cake and have the names of every crew and cast member that had a birthday that week listed on the cake.

Larry Hagman was nice after sobered up. I was working at the Tom Thumb at Spring Valley and Coit. One morning a limo pulls up in front of the store and he goes into the store to get something. Our Cake Decorator was outside and had never been up close to a limo and she was looking at it. Hagman came out and saw her looking at it and told her to hop in and he had the driver take them around the block.

Back when I lived in CC the company I worked for brought in several Miller Lite Celebrates. I met Jim Shoulders, Carlos Palomino and Ben Davidson to name a few. There were more that I met but those 3 stuck out. All 3 of them were very nice and genuine but the one that stood out was Ben Davidson. He rode up the warehouse on his motorcycle to meet the owner and all the employees. He had ridden his motorcycle all the way to CC from his California home. I was able to spend an afternoon into the night taking him around to many of our customer businesses to do a meet and greet. He was intimidating at 6'8" and had the fearsome look to match the height. He was very quiet and reserved but was genuinely a really nice guy. One of the days at noon we took him over to Joe Cotton's BBQ in Robstown to do a meet and greet and to enjoy the BBQ. He was so impressed by the great BBQ and the employees/owners that on a return vacation trip a year or so later he stopped in again to eat and visit the owners of Joe Cotton's. I have also met both Terry and Bobby Labonte, Johnny Rutherford and AJ Foyt. All 4 of them were hunters and owned ranches in Texas at the time I met them. Terry and Bobby Labonte were both really nice guys. Met quite a few TV hunting "personalities" over the years also. Many of them are quite different in person than they are on TV. Also met George Straight way back when he was singing in bars and dancehalls in South Texas. Met Stone Cold Steve Austin after he bought a ranch in the Hill Country.

Every celebrity I have met has been nice except Orlando Bloom I had to grab hold of his arm and jerk him around to apologize for bumping a lady out if his way without so much as an excuse me. I didn't even know who he was, and he had a Hoodie on. The nicest? Probably Dikembe Motumbo and Don Sutton.

And one more....

Was at a cutting at the Young County arena in Graham last summer.....sat down in the stands, and a guy comes up and sits down a seat away....Tom Watson. I am sure I whipped him with stories of watching him play on TV....but truly a nice guy. And quite the transition, from golf to cutting!

Don't know what he was like as a professional golfer, but in the horse business, just a regular guy.

Steve Nash. I was in Salt Lake City for work. Leaving my hotel room there was Steve in hallway walking to his room. The Lakers were in town and he just finished the morning practice. We talked for 10 minutes before I had to let him go to meet people for lunch. I think he would have stayed longer but I was late. I also saw Dwight Howard that same trip but had a much different experience.

I met them both a couple times walking around campus. Super nice, genuine people. We had some policy differences, but I always got the feeling that he felt he was doing what was right for the country, not for himself. He talked about service a lot and seemed to genuinely believe in it. Great great guy and policies aside, DC today would be a lot better with more HUMANS like him.

And I met John Anderson in Arkansas at a restaurant once. We were both in town duck hunting. He's a huge duck hunter and a great guy.

I met Chris Kyle at a happy hour through mutual friends. This was before his book came out and I had never heard of him. He told me he was a retired SEAL and I told him I worked for Raytheon building the MTS systems that went on Predator and Reaper drones. He immediately started telling stories where they used the drones in Iraq. Spent a couple of hours drinking with him and Steven Young (CEO of Craft International). He was gregarious and fun as hell to chat with and kept joking about "choking people out".

Some of the nicest ones probably would be Willie Nelson, George Straight, and the Ice Man himself George Gervin back in about 1978 or 79 when he was at the top of his game and the NBA scoring champ several times. Also met the big dog Antoine Carr and of all places.....on Choke Canyon Lake one afternoon. He was an avid fisherman and a hell of a nice guy albeit a BIG intimidating looking fella. lol

Wade Bourne. He was super nice to me as a young kid on a flight from Houston to Lubbock. He saw I had a DU magazine and sat next to me and we talked duck hunting for several hours. Gave me his business card and said if I was every in the area to call him and he'd take me hunting. Felt genuine, but who really knows. I was said to see when he passed a few years back.

Played poker a couple of times at Carl's Corner with Willie. Got to know George W Bush through a mutual friend. Really nice guy to hang around with, but I've got some issues with how he handled things while in office.

Funny Bush story (sort of). It was around 2002 or 2003 and President Bush was in DC, but there was still quite a bit of Secret Service hanging around. I was at the mutual friend's ranch, which is close to the Bush ranch, when a couple of Secret Service guys come rolling in hot. Turns out one of them had been driving Bush's pickup around the ranch and hit something with it and put a big dent in it. Bush was due back from DC in a few days and they needed to know where to get it fixed before he got back. I called my buddy that has a big body shop in Gatesville and asked him if he could get it done in time. Sure, bring it in and we'll make it happen. Earned some major points with the Secret Service over that deal.

Re: Nicest Celebrity You Ever Met - 07/13/21 07:28 PM

Now I remember meetingTom Landry and his wife. Super nice. He was a big fellow. Later met Bum Phillips. He was short, and a great conversationist. He verified that he had said that after he retired “ he didn’t do nuthin, and didn’t start till noon”. Met Charlie Johnson, the old St Louis Cards football QB. Great guy to have beer with. He was a Chem Engr like me and was then teaching engineering at NM State. But most interesting were his answers on who he regarded as the toughest linebackers, CBs, and Safeties to play against. Unfortunately, I don’t remember those names.

Also met the old Houston Comets head coach. Forget his name. Nice guy. My wife was into the wine by then, and said “you look a lot taller on tv”. She was looking good, so he didn’t get offended.

Got a hug from miss USA at the vip cocktail party after the contest. I got clunked in the head by her crown. It was real heavy. A picture was taken and published in the Harrah’s Casino newsletter. The daughter said it went worldwide, in slightly less than a million copies. So maybe I was famous a little bit for a short while. Kept hoping somebody would ask whe that girl was with Kirk.

Met the previous miss Universe, the one Trump called fat. Her reign was over and she was at the buffet table eating with both hands. Best looking woman there was Michael Andretti’s GF. Son in law and I agreed she had the best butt on earth. He photographed it, but I don’t have a copy. Her dress was barely there. If she had sneezed, she’d surely have been naked. I’d have walked over glass and miss USA if that happened.

Hal Jay - I met him at a gun show years ago and sold him a Remington 700 22-250. His son used it later to kill his first deer. Seemed like a very down to Earth guy.

Buck Taylor - Super nice guy and a big Trump supporter.

Probably Cliff Harris. He was at a Dallas gun show selling his shotgun and I was looking at it. I honestly had no clue who he was until my Dad saw me talking to him and walked up and started talking football with him. I felt horrible!! LOL! Looking back I should have bought the shotgun and then found a Sharpie and had him sign it just to remind me of what a dumba** I was that day.

Wrestler Jake "The Snake" Roberts - At of all places in the gym at a maximum security prison in Huntsville (Did a testimonial at the Mike Barber Show when Mike Barber came to the prison I worked at). I was angry that the Warden did not let him bring the snake.

Chris Kyle - At a training class about 2 weeks before he was murdered. This big burly red headed guy walked up to me and said, "Hi, I'm Chris". I did not know who he was until he was introduced.

Chuck Norris - At Pizza Hut in Navasota. I did not approach him, he was there having a pan pizza and a pitcher of soda. This was when Walker Texas Ranger was the most powerful force in the universe.

Neat experiences.

More often than not, I’d say you’re dead on, at least when it comes to character.

I left out Larry Gatlin. I worked security for him at a show he did here, and after the show I helped him take all his stuff out and load it in his car. We started talking guns and he indicated that he was strapped for the show. We shot the breeze for a good while before he left.

The blonde woman from Walker Texas Ranger, at the rodeo one night. She was cordial.
Ross Perot when I was young, didn’t have much to say to him as an 8-9 yr old, just knew he was on TV. Walked around the corner at the store and there he was, about the same height as I was, with those ears and glasses. Shook my hand, asked me a question or two.

I suppose those are the only semi famous people I’ve met.

We understand. It is a little disappointing, but we’d be even more disappointed to have you gunned down by government-hired thugs.

I’ve met Richard Childress, Jack Roush, Tony Stewart’s dad, handful of race are drivers, Dierks Bentley, Ozzie Smith, Jose Canseco, Juan Gonzalez, and a few other baseball players and they were all very nice. Dierks too the time to walk over and take a picture with my wife. All the ball players I mentioned took the time to chat and sign autographs. Lots of good celebs out there the bad just overshadow them.

R. Lee Ermey, The Gunny
We were making rockets for an episode of Lock N Load.
He was like your crazy uncle, was as if I had known him all my life.
We told him we were being lackadaisical and grabasstic and needed to be dressed down. He laughed and said no, we were working way too hard in the hot sun. Said he enjoyed dressing down actors, especially Baldwins.

Nicest I ever met was Sinbad. I was wandering the Panasonic camera booth at a LV trade show. There is a guy standing there that looks really familiar but I was thinking of someone I had known in my past. I finally said, “Dude I know you from somewhere” then reached over and turned his exhibit floor badge around and it said, “Sinbad”. He chuckled and I said well that explains it. Told him I was thinking he was someone I had worked with or gone to school with. We ended up chatting for a bout a half an hour. Told me his daughter was about to start film school and asked for my opinion on what would be a good camera for her to get started with. He gave me his card which I still have. He had a stroke within the last year and I haven’t heard how he is doing. Very nice guy.

Karl Rove. We BS'd for an hour at a party at my sisters house. He knows every county in Texas, and what the hunting is like all over the state. He's an avid deer hunter so we had a lot to talk about. All deer hunters ask each other the same questions as he did me; what rifle do you use, where do you hunt, do you own or lease, tell me about your lease arrangement.........

Heck, I forgot I had met Ali at a Houston Rodeo party. I asked him what he really thought about Howard Cosell (remember they were always verbally sparring, and nobody really knew if they were really unfriendly toward each other or just faking it for tv ratings). Well, Ali said “I wish he was a fire hydrant and I was a dog”. He was slurring his words by then. Been hit too many times in the head, though he was always hard to hit. He was nice. And he was BIG. Fists the size of frozen turkeys.

Bob Lilly up

My wife use to work for a gal who's husbands sister was married to Bob Lilly Jr. we were invited to a lot of the family get togethers and frequently Mr. Lilly was there.
Easy going and seemed genuinely interested when you were talking with him.

I had 3 signed footballs from him. Gave one to my daughter, another to my son so down to one now.

Re: Nicest Celebrity You Ever Met - 07/14/21 05:13 PM

A couple of more come to mind -

- I met Leroy and Dewey Selmon (not sure where Lucius was) at a business meeting many years ago. They were very friendly and liked to laugh.
- I had heard bad things about Jim Kelly, but met him at an event once and he seemed more than willing to hang around to chat and pose for photos.
- Larry Hagman, as someone else mentioned, was very approachable. We met him at a motorcycle rally and he hung out and talked Harleys with us for a bit.
- Didn't actually meet him, but was walking down an avenue in NYC beside Dennis Miller - he smiled and said hello when I recognized him Little guy as memory serves. On the same trip, my wife and I sat one row in front of Ted Turner and Jane Fonda at a play. They didn't talk to us - which was fine by me - and had blocked the entire row with security sitting at the end on both aisles. Meh...
- For a time I worked at a TV station in Tulsa and we had several famous and near famous people come through. Wes Studi comes to mind as being very cool.

Both former Dallas Cowboys and at different times but I met Troy Aikman at the Lowe's in Sherman. He had stopped there on his way to his place in Oklahoma to buy some hardware for some fence mending.
I met Randy White in Gainesville at North Texas Marine when he was picking up his Ranger bass boat after having some work done on it.
Both were down to earth and personable.

One of my brother's best friends played with him back in the USFL days in Houston. He said he was the biggest jerk on the planet, complete ahole to kids wanting autographs, etc.

He seemed to change tho. I wonder if that was cuz of his son. If that doesn't humble you I don't know what will.

Re: Nicest Celebrity You Ever Met - 07/14/21 06:51 PM

I use to work in the entertainment industry and have a ton of pleasant and not so pleasant experiences with celebrities. Then later in life my daughter was diagnosed with cancer at age 5. She is 9 now and we still get invited to a lot of gala's and celebrity functions because she is very outgoing and it makes folks feel good about donating. I sometimes feel like we get used for this, but overall I'm okay with it, because my daughter really likes the events. Anyway at one event my daughter was backstage with a her chaperone and her chaperone kept sending us picks with the different celebrities and one happened to be Tony Romo. When she got back to our table she talked about how fun a nice he was too her. I had met Tony before he was the starter and he was super cool then so this didn't shock me much. Afterward I saw his wife Candice and told her about my daughter enjoying her time with him and to tell them thank you. She gave me a huge hug and talked about how much they all enjoyed being with her and called Tony to come meet me. We had a blast hanging out and to my complete shock he actually remembered meeting me over a decade earlier. Crazy. Anyway, he was one of the few celebrities at these events who we truly felt like was there, because of the kids and not the cameras. He was engaged in conversations and not looking for a way out.

Spent the day with David Allan Coe in his limo with two hookers and party favors in the 80s. I worked at the venue he was playing, he was doing short shows throughout the day, limo pulled up as I was walking by, he opened the door and told me I was his bartender for the day, I told my boss and she said “do whatever the man wants”, that was a day. I don’t know how nice he is, but he’s sure a fun guy.

I was fresh out of the Navy, had just begun working for IBM in San Francisco. I was repair tech for them. I was on an elevator in one of the larger buildings in downtown SF; the doors opened, and in walked Bob Hope! I was the only person on the elevator. I told him how much I appreciated his visits with the troops. He said, "Hell, son, compared to what you guys gave up to protect us all, I didn't do a thing."

This will probably be a shock to most but Jose Canseco. I was a kid and we would come down to Arlington at least once a year and stay at the hotel near the old stadium to catch a Ranger game and six flags. I was probably 10 or so and Canseco came out to that big pool and played catch with the football with all the kids, threw us all around, let us all tackle him, etc. He then took us all inside to the restaurant and bought all the kids ice cream. There was probably 20 of us - which it was just all random kids.

Ernie Banks.

He was the featured speaker at the little community center we had. All the kids had him sign our shirts, our hats, our ball gloves, our bats and after he signed 2-3 napkins per kid, he finally said, this is the last round. He had to be a saint to put up with us all. I remember that he was very gracious and a gentleman.
