Things are not looking good. This is from his Mom just now:

Hudson is not doing good. His kidney numbers are extremely high. He is retaining fluid. The right side of his heart is not wanting to work and staying stiff. They are about to administer heart failure medication. Please pray for my son.

The right side of his heart is all that was working. This is not good news. Big Change from this morning and not for the good.

I pray for the little man.

From My son Matthew:

Night 2, last update for today. First and foremost thank you everyone for the love and support through this all, my son deserves it so so much! Today was a bit of a rough day for Hudson. During surgery, he was on bypass, and his heart lost blood, and right now, his right ventricle(his only ventricle) is inflamed, and tough and not retaining blood well. So therefore his kidneys are not working properly, so all the medicine, his body is retaining and putting him through the ringer. To fix this, they have put him on Milrinone to help the heart relax, while keeping his heart on a pacemaker for the atria of his heart, which sends a signal to the top to work and the bottom or the ventricle of his heart is pumping correctly but it takes the pacemaker to make this happen perfectly. This is a normal thing for his condition and this surgery, so then his heart will pump correctly to the kidneys, which will help his body process the fluid and medicines correctly and bring baby boy back to recovery. Right now they also have him on insulin cause his blood sugar is wayyy high right now, and they have to test him every hour. Since the pacemaker and the medicine he has been so much more peaceful and calm, because earlier he was screaming out for us and even though we are right there a foot away it’s like he can’t see us, and was screaming in fear and occasionally in pain. I pray tonight he can rest all night with minimal pain outbursts and tomorrow is an amazing day recovering for him!! My heart hurts so bad for my son, and i would lay down and give him my heart in a New York minute just to get him back to normal, the movie John Q hits home for me, whatever it takes for my son, he will get.
Please know his surgeon came by and reassured us that this happens with HLHS babies after the Fontan, he said he hates the fontan and so do the patients but he said this is normal.

Morning update from my Son Matt.

Hudson looks so much better, and his numbers are looking amazing! But we are not through yet!
We had a rough night last night, outside of the normal outbursts there was a good 2 hour fight to keep him restrained as he was tearing everything off of him, he was absolutely pissed. He wouldn’t be my son if he wasn’t.
This morning he recognized me physically so that tells me the medicine sitting on his body is finally processing correctly.
As far as his heart beat and the way it communicates, they are saying today most of his rhythm is sinus which means the top and bottom of his heart is talking correctly.
So far this morning he has drank a full cup of Gatorade but wouldn’t eat anything. He is 100 times better but had 100 miles to go! Starting low fat diet and Lasix today.

Sleep sweet baby boy, they are going to continue to give him medicine to keep him sleepy so he will rest through the whole night, and tomorrow we are gonna try to wake up as normal and try to get him to eat, play, and work on getting some of these lines off of him.
Good news is, his kidney numbers are back to normal!!!!! So that means the plan the dr and the nurses have is working!

Went through this with my Nephew. Multiple open heart surgeries, and when the doctor says there is a high probability he will not survive the procedure, it sure hits you in a soft spot to say the least.

He made it through all of that, and is 17 years old now. I took him to get his hunter's ed (sat in class with him), he doesn't know it yet but I am planning some trips with him. Life is good.

Matthew Barnett is at Children's Medical Center Dallas.

Well we thought Hudson was going to sleep all night but that wasn’t the case, Hudson heart beat spiked and stayed around 150 throughout the night even with medicine to help it come down, it’s at 149 as we speak. He hasn’t truly slept but maybe a total of 30 min straight at one time, so I’m afraid he is going to be super tired today when the team is trying to get him eating and drinking and sitting up. We ask if you can pray that the pain and whatever Hudson is still struggling with in his little body goes away and he can recover fully.

Big Big day for Hudson, they are going to check him for any viruses, remove his cath, remove one of his drain tubes, give him Lasix and check his lungs and make sure the fluids he is drinking is going to the right place. Hudson today is more comfortable than he has ever been, and only gets fussy if he is uncomfortable.

The lasix will get him to move around. He’ll need to pee a lot.

His kidneys will get a workout today. If he has a buildup of fluids which he does or the lasix would not be used he will feel better from getting that out. I know I did.

Good morning from Hudson Lane! Hudson had a pretty good night, no major upsets outside of taking all the stickers off of him and cleaning him and putting new ones in. He did really awesome with X-ray among others. I will update again after rounds later this morning.

That little pond is reserved for the little kiddos because there is absolutely nothing better to me than watching a kid land a big fish. The shear joy they get is what life is all about.

This is going to be an up and down struggle but he is progressing and healing even if he takes a step back everyday as long as he takes 2 steps forward. Kinda like the old timey Texas 2 step.😁

Bobby unfortunately/fortunately my son was a long time chronic patient at Children's Medical from age 2-7 while he battled very aggressive high risk ALL Leukemia. Felt like we lived there with 150+ outpatient chemotherapy treatment days and 350+ inpatient hospitalization nights, longest being 60 days with 7 of those in ICU. As you've said, this journey is more like a marathon with successes and setbacks along the trek. My hospitalization my son had to be admitted to the cardiac floor, used to be 6th floor there due to over capacity in oncology, formerly floor 10. I recall the cardiac floor having phenomenal Healthcare professionals just like the entire hospital. My best advice is to keep the faith, stay positive and trust in the medical skill of all your grandson's care provider's. 12 years after my son's remission, we still have multiple doctors and nurses whom share stories and memories with him and me during his annual checkups.

Right now Hudson is stable, with a lot of morphine and other medicines, as well as the pace maker bringing him back down from that 200+ beat. It’s been quite hectic all morning since about 4, but the last few hours have sucked.
He is peaceful right now and they are changing his dressing.
1 step at a time baby boy, daddy ain’t leaving you, YOUR FIGHT IS MY FIGHT! I love you so much Hudson! Don’t you dare stop fighting! You have the entire world in your corner right now!

Comments from his cardiologist

Good news, 99% sure his heart is good
Bad news, virus are bad, causing the lungs to have high pressure, virus will stick in his lungs about 6 weeks. It’ll slow the recovery down quite a bit. He could be out of ICU by Monday, and off to recovery, or if this virus acts up he could be in here till late next week or further. It all depends on Hudson and how he combats this.
This morning, his ventricle was beating too fast, stress from scans, and everything going on, his heart quickly raced to 200+ beats a minute and was treated with medicine, i can tell you, being here with him, this all started to kick off around 4 this morning and went full on about 6-630, and his stats were good around 10 for the first time all morning, i was 100% involved and hands on helping in any way i could while staying out of the way so the doctors and nurses could do what they needed to do, there was like 7 of them in here. It was the scariest morning of my life and i have never had that much trouble fighting back tears trying to be strong for my son, so that he wasn’t scared, so that he could somehow relax with his heart racing. Thinking about his surgery is one thing, but this right here, i never want to go through this again but you know damn well he won’t ever do it alone.

Heart kiddos are incredibly resilient. Many of your pictures are all too familiar. My son was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, and had the Arterial Switch Operation at 1 week. It’s incredible how fast they rebound and are right back in action. Great to see the oxygen saturation levels back in the upper 90’s. It’s a process but the cardiologist report sounds extremely positive.


Keep telling the story, it was definitely real helpful to work through the stress and emotions of going through such a traumatic experience.

Saturday Update from Dad:

Is a filter or caption even needed for this?! Looks who’s feeling so much better! He may get to come out of ICU next week sometime! For now they are gonna weane him off of medicines and try to get chest tubes out, he will have a “swallow study” Monday to make sure his vocal cords are working properly and making sure fluid isn’t going into his lungs, then he’ll be released to eat and drink! This baby boy asks all day for that!

Great news 🙏

Well they are not a couple anymore for 2.5 years or so now. They are better friends now than they were when together.

They are worn out but the hospital will only let those 2 in. We usually have him about 10 days out of the month so we would be glad to help but Covid ruined that.

It will get easier for them once he is off the machines and moved to the recovery floor. Only one can sleep in ICU so the other has to leave and go home or get a motel close by. My son stayed 4 nights in a row and went and got a room last night. He looked really refreshed after one night's uninterrupted sleep. The nurses come in about every hour in ICU. My son will tough it out and make it though.

Prayers up. I cant help but follow this thread all the way thru full recovery

With a guilty conscience, I finally opened this thread again and am elated with what I see! You got this lil man!

I’ll keep it short! Hudson overall had an awesome day! He was very fatigued from the fight yesterday bleeding over today on his energy levels. He is completely off Esmolol and on to Propranolol, currently still trying to weane him off of the Milrinone. He had another bath today, and is fast asleep!
Will update in the morning! Seems like we are over the bad hump! Praying we get out of ICU early next week but they said possibly middle to end of next week before we can move upstairs to recovery. Look at those numbers!

Your grandson and family have been in our thoughts and prayers. Continued prayers for Hudson and his family and the medical team tending him. God bless you all.

Good morning from Hudson! I wish i could tell you that he slept all night, but he definitely slept off and on but had a great night!

Night Log:

Hudson woke up 1125, change diaper, rub head to sleep for about 15 min

Woke up fussy at 12:20

1236 back to sleep, comfy

106 wake up, pain, change diaper

210 wake up, pain, change diaper, pain med, 255 back to sleep

330 diaper and put back to sleep

420 x ray, back to sleep and diaper 5am

640 juice

Hudson had a big big night and so has daddy
He got some gifts from “Jex” and the boys, so i read him one of the book, Goodnight Construction Site, tomorrow I’ll open the toys for him and read him some more of the books
In addition he also got a full bath, bedding change, all his blankets and clothes washed as well as all my dirty clothes from the last few days, so we can keep any sickness away
He should get to leave ICU this week sometime, and we appreciate very much the prayers and continuous prayers that he keeps winning this battle!!! Living with half of a heart is no easy task, single ventricle warrior, but baby boy Your Fight is My Fight!

Fake smiling for the morning update!!

Overall Hudson had a decent night, he let me sleep for about 3 hours so we are making progress there! Lol
His blood work finally came back with good results!!!!!

At 10:15 he has to get his PIC line put in, which is a very fast operation but he will have to be sedated so please pray everything goes well. Nothing major happening just getting better access.

Look who got some snuggle time with daddy this evening!
Tonight is yet another rough unpredictable night with night shift. We had Hudson asleep right after shift change, then they wanted change all his bedding and bathe him, start his meds and his new feed schedule. He’s had about 12 ounces of blue Powerade per the doctor, they said no more water due to his sodium levels, about an hour ago he woke up and threw everything up he ate and drank several hours ago. They called for x ray of his stomach, found there was still a ton of “dye” in his lower intestine and bowel, which is contributing to his explosive poops, and upset stomach, plus the feed change.

Still got another 45 min until laundry is done so he can have a comfy blanket.

Poor little guy. Hope he gets back to eating soon. I know he will feel 100x better once he gets food in himself.

From my experience as the patient during a long stay in the Hospital, (what I can remember from it which for a lot of it isn't much) the experience can a times be harder on the family and some of medical team than the patient.

Hudson is back to eating small amounts and drinking from a Straw. He has to go slow and start small. I'm sure it doesn't taste good being low fat. He will get used to it soon.

Low fat is not that bad other than Bacon to me Going to be tougher on a kid though.

Overnight update from Hudson’s mother:

1 throw up this morning at 2am. Other than that, He’s doing great. Drain tube didn’t put anything out all shift last night. So that’s positive. I would say overall great. His butt is hurting him real bad. He had a poop diaper every hour last night.(the no fat feeds and a combination of the medicines are causing him diarrhea)

All in all it sounds amazing! Once that last drain tube comes out, some of the medicines will fall off, his stomach will probably start feeling better too, and i am willing to bet he is out of ICU this weekend or early next week!

Great update!!!!!!!!!! All is sounding so much better. We for one house will still be praying for Hudson for a long time, updates or not.

Oh well, one real update today from his Mom.

We had lots of therapy today. Hudson is doing good. He’s not very strong yet but he’s trying! I see the glow in his face coming back. He’s tired of being here, aren’t we all. But we’re getting better!

Had a question for you Bobcat, what all is this tough little guy into? I think it would be pretty cool if when he got home, he had something special waiting for him and a whole bunch of packages to open. I know a bunch of on here would like to mail him something. Hotwheels cars, fishing lures, etc. We could make him a hell of a collection or a really nice stocked tackle box and give him a bunch of fun tearing into some packages or envelopes when he gets home.

If you're up for it, I know we would be.

Silly silly boy is much happier, he drained over 300mL yesterday and last night. That’s a huge jump from 90mL in 24hrs, however he was very active yesterday too.

We just need the draining to stop from his chest tube so we can get out of ICU and onto the recovery floor! Please keep this in your thoughts as you pray

I wanted to let everyone know we are truly grateful for every prayer, every thought, every gift of toys and financial help that everyone has sent. It helps more than you could possibly know! We are not out of the woods yet, this is a pretty big set back but it’s nothing that my baby boy can’t drive over!

Just received some of the worst news. Hudson’s tricuspid valve is leaking really bad. They are talking about going back in for another open heart surgery. I feel like I have been hit by a train. My body wants to fall to the floor. I can’t believe this.

My son is headed up there now. I will post more when I know more. Please pray for my Hudson.

Scratch all that. My son Matthew just got this straight from the head nurse:

Update on Hudson, today the nurses said he had done really well with physical therapy, etc.

His Bicuspid valve is prolapsing and regurgitating, so they have went up on enalapril, which will decrease after load on his heart. They went Down on diuretics, back on aspirin to help pressures in his heart.

He was able to couch up some more casts, so they sent casts to pathology after collecting them, as of right now he doesn’t have plastic bronchitis, but it’s not completely ruled out.

If they have to further diagnose him, they will do a heart cath, and possibly bronc to look at lungs.

If enalapril doesn’t work or help, they will most likely go back to milrinone.

If they are unable to get his tricuspid valve working properly they are going to discuss a full heart transplant. This can be terrifying and most definitely is, however it’s better for him to have one now at a young age instead of when he’s older due to the amount of smaller hearts available vs larger

Oh wow. I pray the medications work for Hudson. Prayers for family and especially for Hudson.

Well to top it all off Matthew got rear ended on 35 in Denton this morning on the way to the hospital to relieve Hudson's mom. The policeman said he was writing it up as Matthew lost control on the wet roads. SMH. The truck doesn't look bad in the photos but is most likely totalled. Funny the airbags did not go off even though the frame is twisted and the motor is too. Her hit the wall twice front and back left. Left rear tire is blown and wheel ruined.

Not sure how this will work out but I know God is in control. Thank God he was not hurt other than a sore head from hitting the glass on the door. God says he will not put more on you than you can stand so evidently he has a lot of faith in Matthew.

Regarding this post, the entire process i was told is in fact the process in an absolute worst case scenario with his leaking tricuspid valve due to it regurgitating.
Right now, a transplant is not being discussed, however, with the history of HLHS babies with this issue, typically get a repair and a lot more times than not, the repair doesn’t work and they then discuss transplant because there are NO options after that to save his heart.
Today, Hudson is doing great! His mom said slept through the night and he is very playful right now, smiling and happy! Maybe today he will want to eat! I’m not gonna force him to do anything, only try to make his stay here seem as normal as possible for him.

Great to hear he slept good through the night and is feeling better this morning.

Not a lot to update. Seems he now has Plastic Bronchitis, Plastic Bronchitis. He's not eating much usually but today he did better. They are now not talking about a transplant (Just Yet) Trying to treat the valve with medication. It is a HUGE balancing act to get what works for him exactly right in the entire combination of things he takes. So Please continue to pray for the Medical team to get wisdom from the Lord. We are wore plum out over this. Plus Matt is without a pickup waiting on State Farm for about 2 weeks they said...... He's driving mine when needed.

Hudson is having another set back. 😣 y’all, this rollercoaster is starting to wear on my mental health. It doesn’t help having anxiety and depression. This added on top and trying to keep my business alive. I’m overwhelmed. Hudson had low oxygen levels all night. They came in at 4am and put him on a heated oxygen and went up to 5 liters. His chest x ray actually came back better than the past 2 days. So the desat oxygen doesn’t make a whole lot of sense at this point. They just did another echo. So we will find out in the next hour if his valve is still leaking or not. I could definitely see on the echo that it’s still prolapsing (which is ok but can cause more leaking). Crazy what all you learn when you’re put in these situations. God is still in control and I’m not giving up on my baby. But please if y’all could pray or send good vibes my way today. My mental health is not ok. I’m wearing down.

Certainly not what any of us wanted in an update today sir and I will continue to pray for Hudson, his mom & dad. you, and all of your family.
Hang in there sir and know that the good folks here that have never met you or your family care very much.

Not what we want to hear. Seems now they are thinking of reversing the surgery but are trying medicines first. This just came from his Dad. He's going under anesthesia to get a chest tube put back in, a pic line put back in and to have a heart cath.

Well the procedures are finally over. They had to bag him 10 minutes when he quit breathing. Then he coughed up 2 huge casts that looked like baby octopus. He now has a new chest tube and already drained 160 MLs and a new pic line. They also did a sedated Echo. Will know tomorrow.

If you think he is not tough, look. All of the scars makes me fighting mad even though I know they are trying to save him.

Hudson is one tough little man.

I was awake and sitting on the gurney draped over the back of a stool when they drained fluid from the lung sacks over a liter from each. I could certainly breath better after getting that out.

Update from my son today:

7-5-2021 PACT team

This morning has been very tough, Dr Hernandez from the PACT Team was introduced to Hudson and I by Dr Gordon, the ICU cardiologist.

Small things to note, Hudson cannot have anymore food or water, only ice chips. His numbers are stable but he is not making headway as they want him too.

The team doesn’t want to take a chance and keep hurting his organs with medication, so they have involved another team of doctors to step in, research, and determine if any additional medical care will help him or not.

Right now, they believe that he Fontan is failing as is the heart, and medication is not helping him progress. This morning Hudson was presented in the conference with the team and all the surgeons and cardiologists.

Hudson has had a very difficult time bouncing back from this procedure, and he is not progressing post fontan as he should.

They are getting him scheduled for a cath so they can take a look at his heart, the pressures and the anatomy of his heart, which will help them determine the next steps but will try to improve anything they can because they want him to live his life with his heart. The tricuspid valve has prolapsed nearly his entire life and leaked a little, but it has been in a severe stage for well over a week now.

How long can they continue to harm other organs to save the heart? At some point when all the medical management fails, the PACT team has to get involved for advanced therapies INCLUDING heart transplant.

As of right now, they are studying and going to come to a conclusion on the next steps. They have to figure out what’s best for Hudson long term.

This is very real, it’s very scary, but it’s no surprise. We have known this may be what happens for a very long time, this is the LAST option for my son.

Hudson’s last heart surgery is now being evaluated as a failed fontan surgery. Friday we will get a cath and MRI. We will know more after those things are done. He is back on heart failure medication (milrinone). His tricuspid valve that’s been leaking is now at a point where it’s not repairable. Heart transplant is now an option we are looking into. Emotions are high. I never wanted things to be this way. I don’t understand. I’ll never understand. My only son, God has a plan for you. You are so special to me Hudson. And special to God.

Just swapped out with his momma, i was able to catch up on work yesterday afternoon and today which is good.
Here is the report i got today.
Hudson feels so much better today. They removed the chest tube early this morning. The first thing he said when I walked in was look at my back it’s gone. It doesn’t hurt anymore. He’s been awake and pretty content, sitting up in bed playing IPad games. They said everything is the same just some BP meds adjusted. Praying it comes down some more . It’s still high 127/78 but has dropped down into the 90’s at times which is where it needs to say. They took the high flow oxygen off and he’s back on a normal nasal cannula. Still NPO and will be all week. Asking for food and water but not begging like he was. And the biggest thing of all he walked from his other room on another hall to his new room about 75-100 yards!
He was moved rooms because another baby was in more serious condition needing the room he was in, however his care does not change, we are still in the ICU just across the hall.
His cath is scheduled Friday with a contingent of a bronc Saturday, they may do an emergency bronc Friday if they cannot intubate him for the cath, and anatomy study of his heart. What this will all allow is a better look at his heart, where the intervening cardiologists and doctors will decide the following:
A. Is Hudson’s heart able to be saved? Are there any more repairs that can be made? Ultimately they want him to keep his heart.
Or
B. Heart transplant. Though transplant seems like the easiest choice, and may be the best decision for him, he may be able to breathe normal and have a somewhat normal life, however, his body could ultimately reject the organ.
We pray that whatever choice is made that Hudson can start to thrive instead of survive. My baby boy is all i have, and if he was bigger and my heart was compatible anatomically and type, i would give him my heart in without even thinking twice.

I think many on this forum would gladly give this little warrior our hearts if we possibly could. I pray God will heal this young man and that he goes on, and he and his amazing story change to world. He has touched and healed many a heart here I suspect. If we could all face our challenges with his courage. May God comfort and keep you all.

If you have Facebook you can go look at a video from today to see how well he is doing today. He is still in heart failure. Medicine is helping with that. Friday and Saturday are big tests and we will know more by Monday.

A lot of really amazing people in this photo that have been with Hudson most of his time at children’s, they have spend extensive time at children’s in Philadelphia for this operation!
This is the 11th child children’s has ever done a lymphatic cath to, and today will be there 11th total success!!!!!!

This also has some special meaning to me. I got to see our youngest twin today, he is the one who had open heart surgery at 1 week of age, at Children's Hospital back in 1986 to close a hole where the aorta leaves the heart. They do some amazing things by the will of God at that place.

We got to FaceTime Hudson tonight! He is doing pretty good but he wants to eat and drink so bad but can’t until Monday so that’s making him fussy but to be expected. He’s getting two popsicles a day and ice chips in between.

He looks a little puffy to me and my wife also. She will be up there tomorrow. I still can't get in.........

Son said his breath smells like silicone caulking from where they glued his leaking lymph system yesterday.

Hudson wants Spaghetti Monday. He told his Mom to go home. She asked why? He said to make me spaghetti and bring it back.

In the calm moments, my God, please let rest and rejuvenation flood over these fighters, especially Hudson, and specifically his family and medical staff. Continue to allow the doctors, nurses, and medical staff to maximize their talents that you blessed them with as they aid and help heal Hudson and, for that matter, each patient they work with, through you. Please wrap Hudson and his family in your love; however that takes its form as popsicles, ice chips, words of encouragement, toys, hugs, smiles, or any other notion, let each token of care be received as a gift of love from you God. Oxygen is off! Been off for over an hour! Woohooo!




Yes sir!!! He can drink and eat! Only no fat foods! The dietician will be coming back for us a game plan! It is imperative to follow the food guidelines strictly for his health and his recovery! He’s getting back to his normal self!
Last night he slept 90% of the night and woke up this morning and told me he slept good!
Though we are doing great, we are not out of the woods yet! Everything from here on out is critical but hopefully we stay in the right track.

I pray all goes well every day so that Hudson has a full recovery.

He looks tired and a little pissed in some of those pictures...I don't blame the little guy at all. Prayers continued and thanks for the update Bobby.

Good Morning from Hudson! Nana took him his homemade bridge from home to play with. Can't wait until they take that last tube off his face. they aren't feeding him thru it but they are giving him medicine thru it.

He is looking better all the time, thanks for the updates. So glad to see the O2 tubes gone that is a big deal. Be glad when the other tube can be taken out though.
