The Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup has been revealed with standard all-wheel-drive and a shockingly low price of $39,974, which drops to $32,474 after the $7,500 federal tax credit it qualifies for is deducted.

Can you imagine the fire an 1800 pound battery would make. I wonder how many years the battery pack lasts.

For a range of 230 mi for the standard battery then you start loading it down and the range sucks.Going on vacation and taking that truck ? gonna stop early in the day so it can charge overnight. LoL

The F-150 Lightning’s battery pack also has a bi-directional capability that allows it to turn into a home generator during a power outage when plugged into an optional charging station setup that’s connected to an inverter. According to Ford, a fully charged battery stores enough energy to power an average American house for three days.

Turn in your man card is mandatory with purchase. Run the AC in that thing and you'll be charging it every 100 miles.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Can Power Your House, a Lot Else—for a While
Doomsday preppers (and, um, power-hungry workers), your electric pickup truck has arrived.

The Great Texas Blackout of February 2021 earned the 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid some great press. Out of the misery of that situation sprouted a PR win for Ford: Folks reported plugging their fridges, phones, and other electric gear into the high-output 120- and 240-volt plugs in the beds of their F-150 Hybrid trucks and literally keeping the lights on for days. Now the fully electric 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning leapfrogs that capability by making it possible to power an entire average home for about three days through its charging cord.

Of course, that capability won't be available on the $41,699 base truck. You'll need to spring for the extended range model and its dual onboard charger system that can cram electrons into the (larger) battery pack at a rate of 19.2 kW. (Ford claims this system is an industry first.) Buyers will also then need to own a home into which an 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro bi-directional charger can be installed.

It's the professional integration of this charging station into the home's electrical system that permits the charger to automatically redirect the power flow into or out of the battery when the power blinks off or back on, while safely isolating the house from the power lines to protect line workers trying to fix the grid.

How Fast Does The F-150 Lightning Charge?
Plug into a 150-kW DC fast charger and the battery can fill from 15 to 80 percent charge in just 41 minutes, gaining as much as 54 miles in 10 minutes. With the extended-range battery and dual-charger plugged into an 80-amp Ford Charge Station Pro charger, the system can take the battery from 15 to 100 percent charge in 8 hours, or roughly 30 miles per hour of charging.

The next step down the charging ladder is a 48-amp Ford Connected Charge station, available to buyers of the standard-range battery (which comes equipped with a single 11.3-kW charger). This adds 19 miles/charging hour and can take the battery from 15 to 100 percent charge in 10 hours. All Ford F-150 Lightning trucks come with a mobile charging unit equipped with a choice of cords that can plug into either a 240-volt NEMA 14-50 outlet (for 13 miles per charging hour) or a conventional 120-volt outlet (for 3 miles per charging hour). Unlike some new EVs capable of up to 800 volts, the F-150 Lightning's system maxes out at 400 volts.

How Much Power Can I Draw From The F-150 Lightning?
The "MegaPower Frunk" is equipped with four 120-volt plugs and a couple USB sockets provide 2.4 kW of power. That's 20 amps of 120-volt power—way more than enough to run a bunch of cordless tool battery chargers, power electric tools, or even a crock pot—a much cleaner, safer way to prepare road-trip dinners under the hood while driving. And this power is in addition to the power that can be drawn from the outlets in the truck bed, which matches the total peak power of a fully equipped F-150 PowerBoost hybrid—7.2 kW. That's enough for welding or running a home air-conditioner. And of course, when plugged into the above-mentioned Ford Charge Station Pro bi-directional charger, the full 9.6 kW is available to power the home.

Will There Be Power To Reach A Charging Station?
When parked and powering various devices, the FordPass smart-phone app automatically notifies the owner when the battery state of charge drops to one-third. At this point charging can be discontinued immediately or the app can instruct ProPower Onboard to continue powering the electric outlets until the point at which there's sufficient charge to reach the nearest available charging station, using the cloud to select from among Ford's network of charging networks that includes some 63,000 plugs.

Re: electric F150 - 05/21/21 01:24 AM

Let’s see...I drive my electric truck 200 miles and then can’t drive it for 8 hours while it charges. Oooooh, yeah, sounds like just what I want.

I think that what interests me the most is that some people think a complete change to electric vehicles will work, when it’s obvious that it’ll work for only a percentage of the population. And I think it says a lot that the big EV fans are on the east and west coast and drive short distances.

Somewhere I read that Toyota, who may be thinking the same thoughts that I am, are working hard to take 6 cylinder turbo engines to the next level. When EV falls short, they’ll be well positioned. Measure that against the cretins at GM that plan to go full electric. It may be their Edsel moment...

Re: electric F150 - 05/21/21 01:51 AM

I was toying with recharge time. According Car and Driver article, max home charging rate with a 240 charger is 13 miles per hour. 200/ 13 = 15 hours.

As they often said on American Bandstand.....Good beat but you can't dance to it.

Batteries are heavy, and the truck weighs about 6,500 pounds, roughly 1,000 more than the same truck with the 3.5-liter engine. The batteries alone weigh about 1,800 pounds. The high-energy-density cells use a nickel-manganese-cobalt cathode chemistry with particularly low cobalt loading. For repairs, technicians will be able to remove suitcase-sized sections of the battery. The skateboard was designed from the ground up with a new frame positioning the battery pack between the rails, extending between the front and rear motors. There are no plans to add a third motor for performance.

So.......... registration cost will reflect additional weight.

Texas fuel price includes 38.5 cents per gallon. So....how does an electric vehicle cover thier share?

I always wonder where the city folks think they are going to charge their cars overnight. You read stories all the time about the people fighting over street parking in front of their house. Well if you don’t have a a garage, where are you going to charge your car? Are they going to drop it off at a charging garage overnight and then Uber back home? This works fine for suburban folks with garages, but I just don’t see how it works when you live in a brownstone in New York.

I also think the 39k price is pretty comical. That’s the one on the lot, just got sold 2 minutes before you got there, newspaper price. Unless you are looking at the single cab, stick shift, bench seat, and no A/C model, I thought new F150’s were closer to the more expensive 50K version.

The power grid can barely handle the needs we have now. There's no way we have the capacity for everyone to be charging their vehicles in addition to the current load.

I guess the day is coming when they'll be scores out of power waiting for a big old diesel generator to show up and give 'em a charge. I looked at the charging stations and most are a joke, a plug or two here and there. There is one in Canton behind the burger joint where the power goes into the building, back where the putrid grease dumpsters are.
