Floor furnace

Floor furnace - 02/20/21 02:19 AM

I guess our desire to get warm has us thinking about what used to be warm when we were kids. The wife just asked if our family ever had a floor furnace. Yes we did, and it was great. You could stand on the grate and be in the middle of this glorious updraft of hot air. Sure would be nice if I had one now (and gas).

My great aunt and uncle had a floor furnace, the only thing I remember about it was my old man said the fan start up sounded like a B29 revving up for takeoff.

That's what we had growing up along with a swamp cooler. Dad had central heat and air installed sometime in 1971.

When I lived in Ohio my house was built in 1860. It had a large wood burning stove in the basement and cast iron floor grates throughout the house. Used to cut and split 2-3 18-wheeler loads of logs every year for heat in the winter

Grandparents had one. On really cold days we would lay on it and play games.

My daughter did that when she was a little pup in a house we were living in in Oceanside California, put a nice waffle pattern on her foot.

We had one when I was growing up. No fan like someone else mentioned. I fell on it and got the waffle scar as well. We had a small Dearborn wall heater in the bathroom.

We had a 220V window unit, a 120V unit and 2 of the gas wall heaters you stand against for a while, then run and jump on the couch as fast as you could roflmao

Yep, had one growing up. The dog hogged the main vent in the living room. Dad built a little cage to put over it so the dog could enjoy it but the heat still got out.

My grandparents in eastern Kentucky had a floor furnace in their old home and that 4x4 grate would get blazing hot. In fact, I have scars on my abdomen when I fell on it as an early toddler one winter. flame

When I was older, I remember stepping around that sucker just to get to the kitchen or bathroom. walking

Mom and dads house had two of them, one in the living room, the other in the hallway between the bedrooms and the only bathroom. I would get up in the middle of the night for a bathroom trip and forget my house shoes and burn my feet. You are so right on the waffle pattern.
