Houses up north have protection for ice dams. Unfortunately ours don't.

Get you a slick metal roof. It'll stick for a little while but slide right on off with a little inside house heat or any sun. Especially if you have a steep slope to the roof. What i read on the internet.

Of all the metal roofs we've have installed (probably at least a thousand over the last 30 years) I got one call from ice damming in this recent storm. Standing seam in a low pitch valley area so overall can't complain. But all roofs can have ice dams not just metal.

I went out and broomed snow off the roof...from the ground with a step ladder and a shop broom then threw rock salt on the roof so it would melt and not refreeze
I had this happen to me. Small drip, small stain from ice dam back up melt. I just couldn't figure a safe way to get up on 2 story extreme pitch to clear it off in time
