Like the profession thread....................What is your road less traveled profession that you wish you would have done?

I wish I would have opened the biggest plant nursery in the world and trafficked foreign plants...........and owned strip clubs. grin

Not so much a profession but I wish I put more time into playing the guitar or learned to play the piano rather than spending so much time in the ball sports. I give credit to my kids learning to play a musical instrument and read music as one of the reasons why they did much better in school and college than I did.

At 18 thought a lot about becoming a cop, lots of law enforcement in my family but don't have the patience for that. Turned down several opportunities to become a professional drummer/percussionist, sometimes regret that but then I wouldn't have the kids I have today.

Pretty must lost now, and giving serious thought to becoming a Coyote. At least that will get me out of the house more so that I can quit my current job as a professional self medicator.

I always wish I would have given a s#** about school when I was growing up. I went through high school and college partying and got that out of my system for the most part. I don't regret it, but I was always more interested in the next party.

Zero regrets of the path I’ve taken.

Worked at a drive-in, fast food, US Army Infantry, The Old Guard, 2.5 yrs in Germany, college, worked in the auto rental, super computer, millwork, thermal processing, oil filed services industries plus state law enforcement.

I wouldn’t have the kids or wife I currently have had my path taken a different course....

I’m perfectly content with the decisions I’ve made....

Out of high school I was to go into marine biology with as many years of college as I wanted to be paid for. Childhood dreams and firefighter mentors changed my mind. I went for what I felt I was born to do and was in the fire service by 21 and retired 34 years later to hunt and fish. There is nothing else I wish I would have been.

I was happy with the job I had for 35 years at the power plant but I really believe I could have played professional baseball if the orthopedic Drs. Had known how to fix my knee like they do today. As it was when it was operated on in 1964 I was in a cast from my hip to my ankle for 6 weeks. It took a year or so to get back to where I could even play sports and it was never like it was before I hurt it.

I went to college had a blast met my best friends and my wife and became a commercial real estate appraiser. In principal I enjoy my job. In execution I hate my job. I enjoy working with real estate etc. My job is possible by getting sales/lease information from people. I call people every day asking how much they paid for their multi million dollar properties or how much they are leasing them for etc. Some folks understand what im doing and are more than happy to help, some folks think you are prying into their finances etc. and get very defensive.

If i could go back I would get into a trade like plumbing/electrical/ HVAC etc. and probably start my own company.

Re: What do you wish you would have been? - 01/19/21 03:09 PM

I made the switch about 5 years ago to do what I wanted to do. Firefighting was in my blood from a young age. Dad was the Chief of the volunteer department, and i started doing that as soon as i could. Graduated high school and went to the Air Force as a firefighter. Went to the USAF Reserves and then got sucked into the oil field. Had several good jobs over my 10 years in the oil patch, but none of them were what i WANTED to do.

After high school, my buddy and fellow firefighter went to work for the state forestry service. Fighting wildfires is a big part of what they do. Finally, about 5 years ago he talked me into coming over to work with him. Fire dozers, Wildland fire engines and hand crew work is a big part of our job. Hurricane, Tornadoes, Ice/Snow storm response. Managing the state forests. When we are not doing any of that, we are working with East Texas landowners to help them plan and manage their private land.

It is the most enjoyable job i have ever had, i just wish the state would take a look at wages and retirement.

The only regret i have is not finishing up my degree before i left the Air Force. When i was in my younger 20's, education wasn't my top priority. I sure wish i had that piece of paper now!

I am happy with my IT job and it lets me and my family live very comfortably. Although I do occasionally wonder how things would have gone if I had followed through and signed up for Air Force ROTC in college or if I had actually landed an Industrial Engineering job when I graduated. I always thought I wanted to be a teacher and really enjoyed teaching IT to adults that were changing careers. That changed the first time I picked up a couple of classes at the local community college and had to teach a bunch of 18-20 year old's. Teaching adults that want to be in a class is rewarding. Teaching kids that are only taking the class because it's required was no fun at all.
