Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/22/20 08:11 PM

This bullet just went through my back wall of my living room while my kids were at home due to covid school closures.
I need help from the THF members to see what [Linked Image]
caliber this is. Thanks in advance.

Man, that's not good. If you had a caliper and a scale, I could narrow down the options real quick. LEO's would be able to help with it. The main thing would be to figure out the trajectory info and any down angle of the flight path to know where it came from. Then back track it from there. That would be first.

Re: Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/22/20 08:25 PM

The main thing to know is the bullet width or diameter, and also knowing the weight would help.

Re: Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/22/20 08:26 PM

Thank yall for yalls advice. I don't own a caliper best i could get was a tape measure.

Munoz are random gunshots a random occurrence out your way? Glad no one was hurt.

If you post up a close up of the bullet with the tape measure there, I can get close.

We live on 30 acres and have a pistol rifle range within a mile from us so there is always shooting near us but haven't had any issues before.

Is that the side of the house that faces the gun range?

Re: Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/22/20 08:50 PM

Glad yall are all ok!

That isnt your standard "pistol" bullet, looks like an FMJ rifle bullet of some kind.

Sounds like an opportunity to own a rifle range.

Re: Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/22/20 08:53 PM

Yeah that's not good at all and I expected that was going to be your answer. The truth is, that gun range is now on borrowed time. I hate to see them get shut down but I bet its closer now than ever for this poor range. Just cant have strays punching through walls especially where your kids play.

Looks like a long target bullet

My first impression of it is it looks like a Hornady 6.5 creedmoor 140 grain HPBT.

Game warden came out and thinks it is a 223 cal. The range is members only so they should know who is out there shooting. Hope to get more info soon.

Re: Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/22/20 09:03 PM

Bullet appears to be over an inch long, are there any 223 bullets that long? I havent played with any of the newer 80 grain plus .224 cal bullets, but it appears to big to be a 223 to me.

It surely didn’t come through a brick wall did it ?

Umm I don't think so. That's a little concerning.

Re: Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/22/20 09:08 PM

I really ain’t seeing that as a 22cal. The member knows what they did. Hopefully they come forward

Looks like some 6.5mm variant.

I was guessing 25ish caliber.

Came through the living room window and hit the couch where my son was sitting 10 mins earlier. Good thing he's a teenager and always hungry because he had just got up to make something to eat.

Yes game warden took the bullet.

Unless it hit a wall after the couch, I'm thinking that projectile skipped off a fairly hard surface before finding your house.

I was thinking along the lines of that maybe it didn't come from the range but much closer. Then again, it could have hit some metal in the couch and absolutely ended up looking like that too.

Re: Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/22/20 11:04 PM

I thought about this earlier. What’s between the OP’s place and this range? What if a Jack azz neighbor did it or someone between the range and his place?

A rifle range a mile away though. What are the chances it didn’t come from there? Very slim. I think someone knows dang good and well what they did and I pray it sits heavy on their hearts to come forward.

It is the time of year when the "expert" deer hunters sight in their rifles on the bag of corn that has the target on the bag.

Re: Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/22/20 11:27 PM

If it came from the range, they either shot up into the sky or hit something that launched it up into the sky. Shooting from prone or a bench, @ a target 100 yds away, won't get that bullet a mile away. Then add in the fact how high it hit the house.

I’d either

1)- move
2)- shut that place down
3)- live in a 2” thick steel house

22 LR with proper trajectory will reach a mile. Ntxtrapper, spot on.

Re: Bullet ID!!! Need y'alls help - 10/23/20 12:05 AM

Just measuring against the tape measure with a piece of paper to match the bullet it looks just under 1/4 inch so thinking .243 inch bullet/ There are quite a few .223, .243 and .264 bullets that are over an inch long which that bullet is. A 90gr Berger VLD is 1.25 inches for example.

Range a mile away a bullet could hit a rock and go that far if it didn't come apart.

Glad everyone is ok,
